Compression connection of metal pipes. Connecting metal pipes - how not to resort to highly specialized technologies? Installation tool

Today, the market for plumbing materials is incredibly abundant. Despite the emergence of a mass of modern materials that meet all requirements, most owners still use metal pipes. The connection of these pipes is carried out using special devices - fittings. This article will discuss which fittings to choose for metal pipes.

The classification of fittings is as follows:

  • Threaded;
  • Crimping;
  • Flanged;
  • Welded (with smooth edges suitable for welding).

They differ in purpose, installation technology, dimensions and shapes, so it is impossible to say unequivocally which fittings are better. To understand how to choose steel pipe fittings for a specific situation, you need to look at each type in more detail.

Threaded fittings for metal pipes

For the manufacture of threaded fittings required for installation steel pipes main water supply, high-strength metal is used. A cylindrical thread is initially cut on the workpieces. To achieve tightness, the thread is sealed with a linen gasket treated with drying oil-based impregnation. Also, FUM tape or other materials that can now be purchased at any plumbing store can be used as a sealant.

The material for the manufacture of connecting fittings can be steel or cast iron. In accordance with the requirements, finished threaded fittings for metal pipes do not have inclusions of other substances or visually noticeable holes that arise due to wrong technology production of metal products. This requirement is relevant for both external and internal surfaces of fittings. The standards also indicate that the ends of the shut-off valves must be located at a 90-degree angle relative to the axes of each passage. Such a metal pipe connector will be very reliable and will last for many years.

Sometimes during production, the edges of fittings are equipped with thick sides, which do not carry a functional load, but serve only as a decorative element. Steel shut-off valves do not have such an addition.

The nominal diameter of threaded fittings can vary from 8 to 100 mm. As a rule, this type of fitting is installed on water mains in which the operating temperature does not exceed 175 degrees and the upper pressure limit is 1.6 MPa.

The main advantage threaded connection What distinguishes such fittings from other types is the possibility of their disassembly: if necessary, you can easily dismantle the pipes without the cost of cutting equipment or hiring specialists (more details: ""). Most often, threaded fittings for steel pipes are installed in apartments, private houses and on summer cottages, since it is in these cases that these devices fully justify their purpose.

Pipe Compression Fittings

Crimping fittings for steel pipes have many positive qualities, which is why they are used quite often. They are well suited for installing various communications in different conditions and do not lose their effectiveness depending on them. Compression fittings are installed mainly on indirect connections - and these are various angles, pipeline turns, connections of pipes of different diameters, branches and even direct connections of metals.

Due to this category of fittings, the disassembly of individual parts of the line is greatly simplified. Also, these devices are successfully used to achieve tightness and smooth installation of pipeline connections and pipe sections. Thanks to compression fittings, liquid leakage from the pipeline and various debris from entering it from the outside are prevented.

Steel compression fittings should not be used in all situations - but knowing their specifics, you can significantly increase the reliability of the pipeline and ensure its normal functioning. The operating conditions for this type of fitting are the same as the previous one - the temperature of the liquid in the pipeline should not exceed 175 degrees, and the operating pressure cannot be more than 1.6 MPa. Pipes connected by compression fittings can be used to transport gaseous substances, various solvents, water, oils and others.

Types of crimp fittings

For metal pipes, press fittings with one or two rings can be used. Press fittings are quite convenient, but they are pressed tightly against the pipes, so it will not be possible to disassemble them in the future, and the pipes will have to be cut out if replacement or repair is necessary. For this reason, compression fittings for metal pipes are used only in hard-to-reach places or for other specific reasons.

Compression fittings are designed with one or two ferrules that secure the device to the pipe without the need for a threaded or welded connection. The materials and characteristics of crimp rings may be different, but the requirements for them are the same - the ability to withstand a certain pressure and hold the pipes in a connected state for a long time.

Metal crimp fittings for steel pipes have many advantages in their arsenal:

  • Complete sealing of the pipeline without the use of welding or other methods of connecting pipes;
  • Possibility of repeated installation and dismantling;
  • Reliable fixation of pipes throughout the entire period of operation;
  • Ability to withstand vibration for a long time;
  • Compression fittings are successfully used in high pressure equipment.

Types of fittings

Fittings can differ not only in design, but also in their purpose, depending on which the following types of devices can be distinguished:

  1. Angle fittings. Such elements are used if it is necessary to rotate the pipeline to a certain angle. The use of corner fittings has significantly simplified the installation of pipes, because previously for these purposes it was necessary to use welding, which took much more time.
  2. Straight couplings. These parts are used to connect two straight pipes. Direct couplings are characterized by their simple design and limited scope of application - in practice, such elements are only suitable if you need to change a section of pipe or establish a connection between two parts of the pipeline. Very often these couplings are the connecting element of a pipe and, for example, measuring equipment. Couplings are also needed for mounting products that have different diameters or different materials.
  3. Tee fittings. The purpose of such fittings is encrypted in their name - tees have three branches for connecting three pipes. A standard metal pipe tee has a right angle or a 45-degree angle, allowing you to separate the pipes in the most convenient way. Tee fittings can be used to connect pipes of both the same and different diameters.
  4. Cross fittings. These fittings are a logical continuation of the theme of tees - the cross has four inlet holes and allows you to connect four metal pipes. All crosspiece outputs are located at an angle of 90 degrees relative to each other.

The use of different fittings can significantly simplify pipeline installation work without using welding or other special equipment for these purposes.

Conclusion

The choice of suitable fittings for specific conditions must be extremely competent and conscious. It would not be superfluous to consult with a specialist or seller. You also need to connect and understand your own experience - for example, high-quality fittings for metal pipes always have a smooth surface without defects, scratches or sagging. Right choice connecting devices will allow you to create a reliable pipeline that does not have flaws in the form of leaks.

When connecting and repairing metal pipes, as a rule, threaded joints or welding are used. But in some cases it is not possible to cut a new thread, and welding work is extremely difficult to carry out due to the increased fire hazard or the inaccessibility of the junction of different sections of the highway.

In addition, these works require significant financial and time costs, and in this case, methods of connecting pipes without welding and threading are used, which make it possible to provide a reliable and durable result without large investments and in the shortest possible time. We will briefly talk about these methods.

Metal pipes have a certain service life, and they are especially susceptible to corrosion in the area of threaded connections at high fluid temperatures. Sometimes, due to the poor quality of the material, fistulas appear in the body of the pipes, which require urgent repairs, and in cast iron sewer pipes, cracks and chips can occur from mechanical stress.

Force majeure circumstances require a quick response to ensure reliable repair of gas, water, heating and sewer pipes without threading or welding. The industry has experience in connecting gas and oil pipelines in such a way that it ensures not only a tight connection, but also the absence of corrosion at the joint parts.

The need for prompt and high-quality repairs, as well as the implementation of a tie-in with a diversion from the main, pushed engineers to a number of design solutions. The basic principle of each of them is the connection of pipes without welding, ensuring a tight and durable connection of joints, even with high pressure and hot media in the system.

This process is carried out using the following most popular devices:

  • repair work using a clamp, this method can eliminate the malfunction of the plumbing, sewer system and even repair a car pipe;
  • flange connection bolted with rubber gaskets;
  • repair and installation clips for water supply systems;
  • Gebo coupling or compression fitting, which allows you to connect sections and make bends from the main pipe, where the temperature of the carrier is not higher than 80 o C with the possibility of reuse;
  • installation of pipes, rotating elements and branches using press fittings, which compress pipes using press jaws and ensure high strength and tightness of the permanent connection.
  • main connections based on hermetic heat-shrinkable couplings using special equipment.

When choosing, it is important to pay attention to the intended use of the product, since it can serve either as a temporary repair device or be of a permanent operational nature, and its cost also depends on this.

Unlike welded pipes, joints based on seals do not require special cutting of the ends, but only need to be cleaned of dirt, irregularities, rust and metal burrs in order to ensure the tightness of the joint.

Joining pipes using clamps, flanges and clips

The simplest devices for quick repair and joining of pipes are usually bolted and consist of two parts, which are put on the pipe and fixed in the right place using a rubber seal. An exception is the flange connection of gas pipes, which is bolted through rubber gasket to replace a section of the highway.

Replacing metal and plastic sewer drains during repairs is also based on replacing damaged areas with the installation of rubber seals without tightening because there is no pressure in them. The main thing here is to prevent leaks, water flowing down by gravity and the appearance of odors.

A quick tap-in or repair using clamps and clips is not absolutely reliable, especially in systems with high pressure and temperature of the medium, and is a temporary measure. Clamps of various designs are one-piece or detachable pipe-like structures and are tightened through gaskets at breakout points using bolts.

They are designed to accommodate all pipe diameters up to 1520 mm and are available in single, double or triple. They are distinguished by quick installation on the damaged area, but require careful and consistent tightening of the bolts without distortions and deformation of the seals.

Connection using repair clips is more reliable because they are a cast body made of painted metal, consisting of two detachable parts. This method also uses a thick-walled rubber gasket, and both parts are connected with bolts.

Installation of clamps and clips is carried out in the following sequence:

  • the emergency area must be thoroughly cleared of metal shavings, irregularities, rust and other contaminants;
  • if a clamp is applied, a rubber pad is wound around the damaged area and sealed;
  • if a repair clip is installed, then a rubber seal is put on, the cut of which is lubricated with a silicone sealing compound;
  • then the bolts are tightened sequentially and without distortion, in the case of a crosswise holder.

Repair clips allow for cross-shaped or T-shaped insertion, and are also used when connecting two sections of the pipeline.

During installation, it is important to avoid distortion of the seal, not to overtighten the bolts, and after supplying fluid under pressure, re-check the effectiveness of the repair and the tightness of the connection.

Connecting metal pipes using press fittings and couplings

The press fitting system allows for strong, tight and durable pipeline connections for various purposes, up to heating, and is designed for high pressure and temperature of the medium. The range also includes tees and swivel elbows with an angle of 45° and 90°, and if you have freezing equipment, you can quickly and efficiently connect new radiators directly during the heating season. A significant disadvantage of this system is the high cost of the equipment because this method requires the use of a special tool for crimping the fitting or press pliers.

A simpler solution to the problem of joining steel, cast iron and plastic pipes is the use of split couplings UR-01 with double-sided sealing on bolts. These products serve For connections of pipes with a diameter of 50 to 300 mm and hold pressure up to 16 atm. The couplings are equipped with polyoxymethylene expansion rings with bicromet type clamps, and the body and pressure covers are made of high-strength painted cast iron. The O-rings are made of ethylene-propylene rubber, and the entire design allows for compensation of minor angular deviations, resists hydraulic shock and protects against tensile loads.

Inexpensive detachable solutions also include the Gebo compression coupling, which is available in single-sided and double-sided versions and allows you to make inserts and corner connections. It consists of the following main parts:

  • main one- or two-sided durable housing;
  • sealing conical rubber ring;
  • metal clamping ring;
  • a split clamping ring with a notch for fixing on the surface of the pipe;
  • a threaded nut that provides clamping, an airtight seal and fixation of the entire structure.

During assembly, it is very important to follow the assembly sequence of the Gebo coupling and the correct installation of the cone parts according to the factory instructions.

In the double-sided version, the coupling has compression rings on both sides and is used for threadless connection of two parts. The assembly process is extremely simple, but requires effective cleaning installation area from rust, contamination and metal shavings. Reliable fixation in terms of strength and durability is no worse than threaded connections and is ensured both by the friction of the sealing gasket and by fixation on the pipe body using a crimp ring. One of the advantages of this design is the possibility of reusing this element by replacing the rubber ring with a new product.

What do we end up with?

The methods we have considered for connecting pipes without welding or threading are a quick way to eliminate a break in the hot and cold water supply and sewerage system. The correct formulation of the problem and the right choice of product will provide you with troubleshooting and significant cost savings in an unforeseen situation that can happen in every home.

Specialization: facade finishing, interior decoration, construction of cottages, garages. Experience of an amateur gardener and gardener. We also have experience in repairing cars and motorcycles. Hobbies: playing the guitar and many other things that I don’t have time for :)

The issue of connecting pipes without welding is always relevant, since not every home craftsman has a welding machine, and not everyone knows how to use it. At the same time, no pipeline lasts forever, so such a need may arise at a dacha, in a private house or in an apartment at any time. Below I will share with you some secrets of specialists that allow you to make such connections without welding.

Metal

First of all, it should be said that all existing pipes can be divided into two types:

  • metal;
  • plastic.

As a rule, the most problems arise with the joining of metal pipes, so first we will consider the methods of connecting them.

So, there are several options for hermetic docking:

Below we will take a closer look at each of these options.

Using a threaded coupling

Most often, metal pipes can be joined without welding using a threaded connection. In this case, accordingly, thread cutting is required. It should be noted that this is not as complicated a procedure as many may think at first glance.

To cut threads, you will need an electric thread cutter or dies to perform this operation manually. Since the price of electric tools is very high, below I will tell you how to do the job manually:

  1. first of all, you need to clean the surface to be threaded from paint. If there are deposits of metal on it, for example, left after welding, they must be ground off;
  2. next you need to remove the outer chamfer from the end using a file;
  3. then you need to put a handle (die) on the prepared end of the part and make half a turn. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the die is put on strictly perpendicular to the axis;
  4. then you need to make a quarter turn back;
  5. According to this principle, the thread is cut to the required length. During the cutting process, the cutters must be lubricated with a special liquid or any other lubricant;
  6. then, according to the same scheme, threads are cut on the other connected part of the pipeline.

For coupling installation on one pipe, the thread length must be several times longer than on the other, so that a coupling with a nut can be screwed onto it.

After cutting the thread, you can make a coupling connection with your own hands, which is performed as follows:

  1. a nut is screwed onto a long thread and then a coupling;
  2. a nut is screwed onto the second end of the part;
  3. then the pipes are connected, and the coupling is rolled up with the length of the thread, as a result of which it begins to screw onto the second part with a short thread. This procedure must be performed until the joint is approximately in the middle of the coupling;
  4. then the nuts are screwed on both sides. Before tightening them, tow should be wound between the couplings and nuts to waterproof the connection.

This connection is reliable and durable. However, it is not always possible to cut threads. If, for example, the pipeline is located close to the wall, this operation is unlikely to be possible.

Gebo coupling connection

The Gebo coupling (“gebu” or “gebra”) is a special compression fitting. With its help, you can connect steel pipes without threading or welding very quickly, and you do not need any special tools for this.

The scheme for its use is extremely simple:

  1. The parts are put on the pipe in the following sequence:
    • screw;
    • clamping ring;
    • clamping ring;
    • sealing ring;
    • coupling;
  1. then you need to put the coupling halfway and tighten the nut;
  2. then the second part is connected to the fitting in the same sequence.

It must be said that this fitting exists both in the form of a coupling and in the form of a tee. This allows it to be used in cases where it is necessary to insert, for example, into a riser for wiring.

As for reliability, it depends on the quality of installation. If the work is done correctly, then this installation is reliable and durable.

You can also connect pipes without welding and threading using a repair and installation clamp. This fitting is a coupling or tee, which consists of two parts. Both halves are tightened together using bolts.

It should be noted that repair and installation clips are intended primarily for temporary repairs, for example, in the event of cracks. However, in emergency situations, they can also be used to join pipes, especially if the pipeline will not operate under high pressure.

In this case, the installation instructions look like this:

  1. first of all, the areas of the pipeline parts on which the fitting will be put on must be cleaned of rust and all kinds of irregularities so that their outer surface is absolutely smooth;

  1. then you need to put a rubber seal on the pipe. The seal cut must be coated with silicone sealant. It should be noted that the seal must completely surround the pipes so that there is no gap left.
  2. then both halves of the fitting are put on the rubber seal and tightened with bolts, as shown in the diagram.

This method, as we see, is also extremely simple. The same principle applies to the connection with a clamp coupling. The only difference is that it is tightened on one side, not two.

It must be said that if you use pipe clamps, the connection of pipes without welding is even more reliable than using an installation and repair coupling.

If you need to connect profile pipes without welding to assemble any structure, you can also use special profile clamps.

Plastic

If you need to assemble a plastic pipeline, you can use compression fittings, which work on the same principle as the Gebo coupling. Most often, metal-plastic and PVC pipes are connected in this way.

Also, sometimes special glue is used for these purposes. The installation process in this case is extremely simple:

  1. places are smeared with special glue;
  2. then the parts are turned half a turn;
  3. they should be held in this position until the glue hardens.

It must be said that such a connection turns out to be quite strong, since the glue dissolves adjacent surfaces and, in fact, welds them.

Compression fittings are also used to assemble metal-plastic pipelines. However, this requires a special tool that allows you to compress them.

To perform temporary repairs, you can also use the clamps described above.

That's probably all the most effective ways pipe connections without welding, which I wanted to introduce you to.

Conclusion

As we found out, in addition to welding, there are a number of other methods by which you can repair or even install a pipeline. Moreover, some of them allow you to obtain an equally reliable and durable connection. The only thing is that in any case, the work must be done very carefully, in accordance with the above recommendations, so that the pipeline is sealed.

When assembling water supply and sewerage systems, it is necessary to ensure the reliability and tightness of the system. The most critical places are pipeline branches, connections of elements along the length, points of connection to plumbing fixtures, areas of change of direction. Recently, polymer pipes have taken leading positions in the market due to their characteristics. In order for them to “show themselves in all their glory”, it is necessary to select the appropriate connecting elements for them.

Compression fittings are very practical connecting elements in plumbing

Structure and principle of operation of the fitting

The principle of operation is in the name. Compression is a word derived from a Latin root that translates as “compression.” Sealing is ensured by crimping. The main load is taken by the thrust (compression) rings. This element prevents the movement of the pipe in any plane and does not allow spontaneous loosening of pipeline parts.

The compression fitting includes the following elements:

  • The body, on which a pipe stop and thread are provided, has a trapezoidal cross-section.
  • An O-ring (gasket) is installed between the body and the press-fit sleeve. The material of manufacture is rubber. The product ensures reliability and tightness of the connection even when the pipeline is bent.
  • The clamping (crimp, compression, thrust) ring prevents any movement of the pipe.
  • The pressing sleeve limits pipe deformation. Made from the same material as the body. The part securely fixes the sealing gasket.
  • Clamping nut (cover) is a part that has an internal thread and external grooves to ensure convenient tightening.
The device will help you understand the principle of operation

Advantages of using compression fittings for polyethylene HDPE pipes

  • used for various pipe materials;
  • resistance to corrosion (rust) due to the absence of metal parts;
  • safety, used for drinking water supply;
  • connections can be disassembled up to 10 times, which allows us to talk about reusable use;
  • repairs are performed by replacing the failed part;
  • strength and reliability;
  • to temperature changes, chemical influences;
  • fittings for the compressor are easy to install, will not cause problems during installation and will not require special equipment;
  • wear resistance and resistance to mechanical stress.

Types of cross-linked polyethylene products connected with a crimp wrench and a coupling

The classification is made depending on the area that requires the installation of connecting elements. The types are as follows:

  • couplings for connections along the length;
  • tees for creating branches;
  • corner (elbow) for changing the direction of the pipeline;
  • T-shaped connections for branches;
  • stubs.
A T-shaped connection is needed for branching communication - there’s no way without it

Types of compression fittings are also distinguished depending on the material of the pipes and the connecting products themselves. Metal types of connecting elements are made of nickel-plated brass, copper, and steel. The metal fitting is suitable for the following types of pipes (the material for the manufacture of connecting parts is indicated in brackets):

  • installation of external engineering networks (brass with nickel plated);
  • metal-plastic (brass and nickel are used);
  • copper (copper, steel, brass);
  • steel (steel, brass).

Advice! Metal joints are used mainly during repair work. For example, when it is necessary to replace a section of a metal pipe with metal-plastic, it is reasonable to use crimping products.

In addition to metal, products are made from polymers. It is better to choose products from the same material from which the pipeline is made: polyethylene - for polyethylene pipes, polypropylene - for polypropylene. If you need to connect polymer pipes with another material, select plastic products with metal internal threads. Compression fittings can withstand high pressure at pipeline connections.

How to Choose Steel External Fittings from Wak Manufacturer

  • Before going to a specialized store, draw a diagram of the water supply system, which will allow you to understand how many fittings and what design will be required.
  • Pipes and connecting parts are selected so that they are manufactured by the same manufacturer.
  • When choosing, pay attention to the outer diameter and wall thickness. The SDR parameter shows the ratio of the pipe wall thickness and the outer diameter of the pipeline.
  • The seller is required to present quality certificates and product passports. Even if you purchase inexpensive parts from unpopular brands that have all the necessary certificates, you can be confident in their quality and reliability.

The price of compression fittings depends on:

  • product diameter;
  • material;
  • assignments for various sections of the pipeline;
  • manufacturer.

For brass, the following values can be given:

  • domestic manufacturers 50-500 rubles per piece;
  • foreign manufacturers 250-2500 rubles per piece.

Plastic fittings are cheaper. The price also depends on the presence of metal inserts in the element. The price is in the range of 20-1600 rubles per piece.

Technology for proper installation of copper and brass fittings with threads for metal-plastic pipes

Installation of compression fittings is carried out in the following order:

  1. The assembly of the pipeline begins. The pipes are cut. To cut pipes from different materials, select the appropriate device for the job. Pruning is done at right angles.
  2. Round the edges. At the same time, burrs and irregularities are eliminated. Defects and contamination are not allowed on the surface of the pipe that is inserted into the body of the fitting.
  3. Remove the nut from the connecting piece and put it on the pipe. After this, install the crimp ring. The thickened part of this part faces the tail of the pipeline.
  4. Install part of the pipeline into the fitting, while pushing the clamping ring all the way.
  5. Screw and tighten the nut (first by hand, and then using a tool).

Compression fittings must be of the highest quality possible.

If you decide to replace the plumbing or heating system in your apartment, then our article is for you.

In it we will tell you how to install metal-plastic pipes, what is needed for this, specifications pipes and their repair.

I would like to say right away that installing metal-plastic pipes is not a difficult job, but it is responsible and even a beginner can do it. And the first question: “How to choose metal-plastic pipes?”

Metal-plastic pipes are aluminum pipes with two protective layers of polyethylene: internal and external. The layers are connected to each other using a special glue, this helps improve the technical characteristics of the pipe.

Thanks to the smooth inner layer, salt deposits and rust do not accumulate in the pipes. The outer layer protects aluminum from condensation and external irritants (ultraviolet radiation, high humidity), thereby extending its service life.

The main advantages of these pipes include high flexibility, that is, you can bend the pipes at the desired angle, does not require special equipment, the pipes are electrically safe, do not require painting, have a long service life (more than 50 years) and are relatively inexpensive.

The disadvantages of these pipes are as follows: their maximum operating parameters are 10 bar, temperature 95 degrees. They are sensitive to water freezing, they can be easily cut with a sharp object, pipes with fittings cannot be bent, if the impact on them high temperature, they are deformed.

But, despite these disadvantages, metal-plastic pipes are in great demand among those who decide to carry out the work of replacing water pipelines themselves.

Speaking about methods of connecting metal-plastic pipes, it is worth noting that there are only two of them.

Namely:

  1. Press fitting.

Let's look at them in more detail.

With this method, through the use of threaded fittings. The advantages of this option are ease and speed of assembly, and you do not need to purchase special equipment.

Tools you will need:

  • Pipe scissors or hacksaw;
  • Calibrator for correcting edge deformation after trimming;
  • Measuring tape (roulette);
  • Spanners;
  • Stripping knife.

When installing metal-plastic pipes, the instructions will be simple.

First, we draw up a plan for their location in the room. Then we measure the required length of the pipe and cut it with a hacksaw or special scissors. Usually, when cutting, the edge becomes deformed. Using a calibrator, we give it its original round shape.

Now we take the required fitting and remove the nut and clamping ring from it. Carefully place them on the pipe. Before connecting the pipe to the fitting, be sure to sand the edge of the pipe. It should not have sharp edges or burrs. For these purposes, use sharpened metal drills or a round file of the required diameter.

Now you need to put the pipe on the fitting fitting and align it with the fitting fitting. Now you can return the pressure ring to its place and tighten the nut. First we do it by hand, and then with a wrench. Tighten until a characteristic crack appears.

But you shouldn’t put in too much effort, otherwise you can break the thread, which means you’ll have to throw out this part.

Sometimes, during installation, especially when introducing pipes into an apartment, it becomes necessary to connect metal-plastic pipes with metal ones.

For this we use special adapter fittings. You will need to cut a thread on a metal pipe, but the process is the same. For branching, transitions from one diameter to another, and turns, also use special fittings.

It is possible to bend pipes at right angles without corner parts. But then don’t forget to install a special spring at the bend. It will not allow the pipe to be pinched at the bend.

It is not advisable to use this connection for installing heating pipes and hidden pipelines. It makes more sense to use them that do not hide in the walls.

Advice! Work on installing metal-plastic pipes must be carried out at a temperature not lower than 10 0 C. Before starting installation, turn off the water supply at the entrance to the apartment or the riser in the basement. But with the latter option, do not forget to warn your neighbors.

Press fitting

The conditions for installing a press fitting allow such pipes to be hidden in walls and filled with concrete. It is more reliable compared to compression fitting.

But it will require special equipment for installing metal-plastic pipes.

But the quality of connections improves, the number of parts and material (pipes) used is reduced, which significantly reduces the cost of installation costs.

For installation, we will need special crimp couplings, a pipe cutting knife or hacksaw, and manual or electric press pliers. We measure the required pipe size and cut it. We process the edge of the pipe with a calibrator to eliminate the deformation that occurs after cutting. We put a crimp coupling on the pipe.

After this, insert the fitting with the rubber seal and compress the coupling using press pliers. A ring should appear on the coupling, it will be clearly visible. It is worth noting that crimping is only allowed once!

The fitting can be of various shapes, which allows installation of a pipeline of any configuration. Some manufacturers initially attach the coupling to the fitting. Therefore, the connection process will be slightly different from the above.

In this case, we cut the pipe, calibrate and clean the edges. Then we place the pipe on the fitting fitting. We can control the tightness of the fit through the holes in the crimp coupling.

With this type of connection, it is possible to install metal-plastic heating pipes, and not just water pipes. They can also be used for heated floors.

Advice! Despite the better quality of the connection than a compression fitting, some people do not want to use this method when replacing pipelines due to the need to buy press pliers. If you intend to use this particular installation method, ask specialized stores if they rent out this equipment. Many owners have been providing this service for a long time.

The pipeline is installed. It seems to you that now everything will be all right, but no one is immune from the vicissitudes of fate. Therefore, we propose to consider ways to repair a metal-plastic pipe.

There are several of them:

  • Epoxy glue is great for sealing small leaks in pipes. To do this, we shut off the water supply, having previously marked the repair location. Dry the surface; a hair dryer is perfect for this. Apply a layer of glue to the leak site, wrap it with a bandage and apply glue again. After 11 hours you can turn on the water. The leak has been fixed.
  • Flange - temporary repair. To do this, we will need a factory flange for pipe repair. We put a rubberized gasket on the repair site, put on and tighten the flange. The leak can be eliminated for a long time, but in the future it is better to replace this section of the pipeline with a new one.
  • Bandage is also a temporary option. Cut out a rectangle of the required size from car or bicycle tires. It is applied to the leak site and secured with wire or clamps.
  • Replacing a damaged section of pipe is the most reliable way, but it requires financial costs. Buy a pipe of the required size and connecting parts (fitting). Cut out the damaged area and replace it with a new one.

When using flanges and bandages, you must be careful not to deform or pinch the pipe. Calculate the pressing force.

As you can see, installing metal-plastic pipes is not a difficult task, but it requires care and caution. Don’t be afraid to learn new things, they will come in handy in life.
