Apple swan: step-by-step description

An apple swan is the simplest figure that will not be difficult to make even for beginners. In order not to get confused in the actions, step-by-step instructions are drawn up. For this craft, you will need special carving knives. If they are not available, use the thinnest knife you have at home. In addition, you will need 2 more regular butter knives.

Take a ripe and beautiful apple, cut it diagonally through the center. Place 1 of the halves cut side down on a cutting board. Place butter knives above and below the apple - they will stop the knife with which you will cut out the wings of the swans, preventing it from going deeper than necessary. Trim both sides of the apple from the core. To do this, visually mark a 1 cm wide strip in the middle. Make a cut with a knife not all the way to the end of the fruit, make a counter cut from below. If you did everything correctly, you will get a corner. Carry out exactly the same manipulations with the other side.

Now make as many neat corners as possible from the piece you cut in the previous step. The larger the cutout you get, the more beautiful the wings will be. Don't forget that there should be the same number of corners on both sides. Once you have everything cut out, you can start shaping the wings. Place the cut corners on top of each other.

Prepare a place for the head: make a deep cut in the middle of the swan’s body (a strip 1 cm wide). To make the head, you will need the remaining half of the apple. Cut a slice of them that is equal in thickness to the prepared area for the head. Make several cuts so that you have a finished figurine. Form eyes from apple seeds and attach them.

Apple swan: master class

You will need:

  1. Apple;
  2. Sharp knife;
  3. Cutting board;
  4. Match or toothpick;
  5. Currants or blueberries.

Instructions:

  • Try to choose an apple that has no flaws. Take a sharp knife - the thinner it is, the more parts of the swan's wings you can make. Cut the apple in half and core it. Place 1 half cut side down and carefully cut a slice into it on both sides. In each side, cut out 2 more small parts (according to the principle of a nesting doll - one inside the other).
  • Insert the large slices back, moving them slightly from the cut line. In the same way, install the small ones in their places - one in the other, and each one is shifted to the side. You should end up with the body of a swan with fluffy wings.
  • Cut a thin slice from the remaining 2nd half of the apple - this will be the neck. Make a deep triangular cutout in half of the body - this will be the place for the neck. Insert the workpiece into the cutout. Break off part of a toothpick and use it to make swan eyes out of berries.
  1. To make the final result more colorful, use apples of different colors (green, red, yellow) to create swans.
  2. It is advisable to use fruit for decoration that contains a moderate amount of iron so that your swans do not darken for as long as possible. To check the amount of iron in an apple, make a cut on it and watch how long it takes for it to start to darken. If after 10 - 15 minutes, it is better not to use such fruits.
  3. Apples for carving should not be very ripe. It is better to give preference to glossy, dense fruits.
  4. The apples can be any size, but before and after carving, to prevent darkening, soak them for 15-20 minutes in a solution of citric acid and water. Periodically water the fruits with this solution while cutting.
  5. After carving, soak the swan for 15-20 minutes in ice water.
  6. Use only high-quality steel knives in your work; they not only do not become dull for a long time, but also will not affect the color of the products.
  7. Try not to forget about a sense of proportion. Use decorations to create accents.

Carving is the art of aesthetically cutting fruits and vegetables. Real craftsmen carve artistic masterpieces, decorating dishes in restaurants and hotels. However, you can learn the basics of this type of creativity at home, if you have a sharp knife and the desire to learn.

In this article we will look at how to cut a swan from an apple. Step-by-step instructions and recommendations for beginning craftsmen will help you cope with this task with ease. A swan can decorate any holiday dish, cut fruit, or surprise a child who doesn’t really like apples. A beautiful big apple, a sharp knife and lemon juice will help you realize your plans. But we’ll talk about this in more detail later in the article.

How to choose an apple?

In order to create a beautiful swan from an apple during carving, the fruit is selected with a bright, rich color and an elongated shape.

It must be fresh and juicy so that the fruit pulp is dense. When decorating, you can place two swans on the dish. One is from a red apple and the other is from a green apple.

Preparing for the cutting process

So that when making a swan from an apple nothing distracts from the process, you need to prepare everything you need nearby on the table. You will need a sharp knife with a wide blade; if you have a carving knife, you can use it. Since this fruit quickly darkens when cut, releasing juice, you need to prepare lemon juice or chopped lemon slices. Each cut is immediately processed until darkening appears.

To prevent a sharp knife from accidentally cutting off excess layers of the fruit, when making a swan from an apple, craftsmen advise using identical butter knives as a stand. To avoid damaging the table surface, use a plank.

Step-by-step instruction

The first central cut when making a swan from an apple is made at a slight angle, so that the tail of the fruit remains on one side. Then the pulp is immediately treated with lemon and turned down onto a board.

Next to the workpiece, butter knives are placed on the table on the left and right. Then, using a sharp knife, cut off a rectangular corner from one side and the other of the middle of the apple. Each of the corners is cut into smaller ones, as shown in the second frame of the photo below. Don't forget to wipe all small parts with lemon or sprinkle with lemon juice.

Then work continues on the central part. Some people leave it unchanged, but you can also make carved cuts on it. It will be enough to cut off a corner or two. If you have special figured knives for carving, then it will be beautiful to make a pattern on this part of the apple.

Making the neck and head of the bird is the next stage of working on the apple swan. It is performed from the first half of the fruit cut off. You will need to cut an even layer 7-8 mm wide. A thin strip is separated along the side line of the apple with the peel. You can leave the tail, you will get a crown on the head of a royal bird. The beak is sharpened.

Assembling all parts

When the preparations are finished, you can begin to put all the elements together. Thinly cut corners are inserted into the rectangular side holes, each moving slightly back. Try to keep the distance between the parts the same. Once the wings on the left and right are assembled, start working on installing the head.

This can be done in two ways, depending on the size of the cut neck. If your part has a narrow strip, then cut a small hole, as in the photo in the step-by-step instructions. However, many cut out the wide lower part of the neck to make the head more securely attached. Then a large hole is cut out for the neck, as in the photo above.

Since the knife is sharp and the cuts are even and smooth, all the details fit perfectly together in the craft. You can safely take it in your hand and transfer it to a festively decorated dish, without fear that it will scatter on the table.

Festive dishes attract not only their taste, but also their beauty. Even a beginner can learn the basics of decorating appetizers. A swan is one of the simple shapes that you can easily make with your own hands. The following article describes in detail the instructions for cutting out a figure from an apple.

How to make a swan from an apple - preparing products and equipment

  • To decorate dishes, use fruits of different colors. This will make the overall design more colorful.
  • For decoration, choose ripe, unspoilt apples with smooth skin and firm flesh. At the same time, fruits should not be overripe.
  • Rinse the fruits under running water and dry with paper towels. Rub the apple with a soft cloth to give the skin a glossy shine.
  • Use a sharp stainless steel knife to cut fruit. Since you will have to make precise cuts on the fruit, the knife must be sharpened. The metal can also change the color of the flesh. In addition to the main knife, you will need two smaller knives.
  • Prepare a cutting board on which you cut the fruit. Give preference to a wooden surface; it will prevent the knife from slipping while slicing.

How to make a swan from an apple - instructions

  • Place the fruit on its side. Hold it with one hand and cut the apple slice strictly diagonally with the other. In this case, cut the two parts into different sizes. A smaller slice is needed for the neck and head of a swan, and a larger one for the body with wings.

  • First cut out the neck and head for the figure. To do this, cut a circle from a smaller part of the fruit. The most convenient way to do this is to place two knives under half an apple.

  • From the circle, cut out the head and then the neck. Guide the knife along the pulp according to the curved line shown in the photo.

  • You will get this blank for the figure. Use the seeds from the center of the apple instead of eyes. Press them slightly into the pulp on both sides of the fruit preparation. If you want your swan to have a crown, then don't cut off the tail.

  • On the opposite side of the ponytail, make a small indentation in the central part. It is necessary to install the swan head.

  • Next, move on to cutting the wings. To make neat cuts, use two small knives. Place them on the sides of the workpiece. Place the apple cut side down on the board, with the neck recess positioned perpendicular to the knives. Make the first cut along the cut side, but only to the middle. Cut the second part of the slice from the top. Do not remove the knives; they will act as a limiter for the upper cut.

  • Then use only the inside of the fruit. Place it between the knives and cut out the next slice with a corner.

  • Use the same method to cut off the last wing for the swan. Repeat with the second side of the pulp.

  • Place all parts of the apple back and move the feathers slightly towards the bird's tail. Place the head and place the decoration on the dish.

  • To prevent the apple pulp from darkening, sprinkle a solution of water and lemon juice on it while working.
  • Once you have completely carved the swan, soak the apple in ice water for 20 minutes. This way the decor will remain fresh for a longer time.
  • Such decorations for dishes are very voluminous, so you should not use a lot of them, but only to focus the attention of guests.

It turns out that carving a swan from an apple is very simple. The main thing is to use these little tricks and strictly follow the instructions.

If you still don’t understand how to use additional knives to carve a swan, then watch the video:

On the eve of the New Year holidays, full of celebrations and feasts, I would like to take you on a short excursion into the world of carving. Today we will master the art of fruit carving. This cooking class is for beginners, so don't judge too harshly. The fruit snack “Apple Swan” will decorate the table and please the eye. I would recommend involving older children in the cooking. They have a lot of patience in mastering culinary innovations.

For carving you will need one large apple with a tail and stalk. The brighter and larger the apple, the more attractive the swan will be. You will also need a sharp thin knife.

So now the magic of transformation will begin. I hope you washed the apple well and wiped it dry. Divide it into two parts with a sharp knife so that one apple part remains with the stalk.

Then take a large part of the apple and cut off a thin pancake, still with the stem. Why do you think I focus on this unedible thing? The apple “stick” that comes out is the crown of the male royal bird. We will cut out a harmonious pair of swans that simply cannot do without a stalk and a tail.

Set the circle aside. Turn the halves cut side down onto a work surface. Visually divide the apple slice into two parts. Make cuts on the visual halves without cutting all the way through. The middle that you determined by looking should be left at least 1 cm wide.

Now I advise you to pay attention to the photo. It is difficult to explain in text how to correctly cut out wing parts.

At this stage, we already have the body of future swans and triangular apple slices.

We currently have four apple wing slices - two pairs each.

Now each wing needs to be cut in a similar way as the first time.

Continue cutting out the wings using the photos as a guide. Each wing will consist of five to six cut out figures.

Look how clearly you can see in the photo what should happen.

For now I have a headless pair of swans.

In the center of each tummy you need to make a rectangular indentation for the neck.

Necks with heads are cut out of an apple circle, along with a tail - for a female, and a stalk - for a male.

These are the royal swans I made from apples.

Do you agree that mastering the simplest apple carving is not at all difficult?

Let's spread the feathered wings and serve the loving couple to the festive table.
