DIY soft headboard. Making a soft headboard How to make a soft headboard yourself

The bed determines the direction and style of the bedroom design. An ordinary boring bed makes the entire decoration dull. How can you radically and inexpensively update this piece of furniture? Three interesting techniques will help you create a soft headboard for your bed with your own hands.

Upholstered headboard - a new design for your bedroom

The headboard of such a bed is completely covered with fabric, under which soft foam rubber is placed. For greater decorativeness, various methods of screeds are used. These beds are quite expensive, but the good news is that you don't need to purchase a new bed. You just need to make a new soft headboard - the video and master class will help you with this.

Even the simplest upholstered headboard looks great, and if there is an ottoman with the same finish next to it, the new room design is almost ready.

Master class No. 1 “upholstered headboard in a couple of hours”

This is one of the simple techniques for creating such bed decor, which is perfect for those who do not want to spend a lot of time fiddling around.

Materials and tools:

  • plywood;
  • foam;
  • any fabric for the base;
  • thick fabric for external upholstery;
  • furniture stapler;
  • electric jigsaw.

Since this method does not involve screeding, it is advisable to take fabric with a bright, beautiful print. Plain fabric can also look impressive, you just need to choose the right color so that you can enjoy the soft headboard of your bed with your own hands for as long as possible.

Description of work

Step-by-step description of how to make a soft headboard:

  • We cut the plywood sheet with a jigsaw to the required size - it can be either a rectangle or any other shape. However, when covering, it is easier to work with a rectangular shape.
  • 2 layers of foam rubber are applied to the plywood, then we cover it with fabric for the base - this can be any unnecessary cut. It should be secured with a stapler on the back side of the plywood sheet.
  • Now we proceed to the final covering with beautiful fabric and you're done!

Very little time was spent, but the interior was radically transformed. I wonder if the headboard is the same color as the curtains - an amazing solution.

Master class No. 2 “headboard in the form of soft squares”

The good thing about the upholstery technique in the form of soft squares is that the headboard can be made even from fabric scraps and pieces of foam rubber. If other methods require solid cuts, then here you need to make a lot of small squares. Moreover, you are not limited in the combination of colors and textures - the originality of the product is guaranteed.

Materials and tools:

  • textile;
  • foam;
  • batting (sintepon);
  • plywood or very durable cardboard;
  • scissors;
  • jigsaw;
  • glue or screws;
  • screwdriver;
  • hooks for hanging;
  • furniture stapler.

Description of work

Decide on the materials and start creating your own masterpiece from soft squares.

Step-by-step description of the work:

  1. We cut about 60 squares from plywood or cardboard - the size and size depend on the dimensions of the future headboard.
  2. We cut out squares of the same size from foam rubber, and slightly larger squares from batting - with an allowance for the overlap on top of the foam rubber.
  3. Lastly, we cut out a square of fabric, taking into account that its edges should go to the back side for fixation.
  4. Now we assemble the squares in this order - plywood, foam rubber, batting, fabric.
  5. We secure the fabric on the back side of the product using a stapler.
  6. We prepare a base from plywood, MDF or durable cardboard according to the size of all the squares folded together.
  7. We attach our squares to the base with glue or self-tapping screws.

This headboard is hung on the wall using special hooks. Using this technique, you can create both a plain headboard and a patchwork style.

Master class No. 3 “headboard in carriage style”

Carriage tie or capitonne is a fairly common method of furniture decoration, inspired by the way carriages were finished in the 18th century. This is a soft upholstery fastened with rivets to the base, forming a pattern in the form of squares or diamonds. This decor looks aristocratic, bringing a feeling of comfort and stability to the interior of the bedroom.

For this type of headboard decoration, it is best to choose heavy, expensive fabric that forms luxurious folds.

Perfect for:

  • leather – natural or artificial;
  • velours;
  • velvet;
  • faux suede.

These are dense materials capable of forming distinct, beautiful folds - they are the goal. The fabric may have a pattern that matches the design of the image being created. Therefore, light fabrics with simple patterns are completely unsuitable for carriage screeds.

The following materials are used for screeding:

  • buttons covered with fabric;
  • massive beads;
  • crystals.

Buttons can be matching or contrasting - both methods give their own unique effect. Classic contrasts of black and white in the art deco style are good. You can use fabric rose buttons together as a romantic element.

Materials and tools for work:

  • a sheet of plywood or a board with holes;
  • foam rubber 50 mm thick;
  • padding polyester;
  • rubber glue;
  • thick paper;
  • strong thread;
  • large needle;
  • marker;
  • buttons;
  • thick fabric;
  • furniture stapler;
  • electric jigsaw;

Description of work

For this mission, you will need a board with special holes or a sheet of plywood on which the same holes will be made.

This method requires accuracy and diligence, but the result is worth it - a royal bed in your home. The description and video will help you do all the work without errors.

Step-by-step description of how to make an upholstered carriage headboard:

  • Cut out the plywood and foam rubber to the desired shape.
  • We make markings on plywood or a board with holes in accordance with the screed pattern - in the form of squares or diamonds (diamond mesh). On the finished board you just need to mark the holes needed for the job, on plywood - drill them.
  • Prepare paper on which we make exactly the same markings.
  • We place paper on top of the foam rubber and mark the holes using a marker.
  • The most important step is to make holes in the marked places. To do this, use a knife.
  • The foam rubber must be glued to the plywood or board with rubber glue so that the holes of both materials coincide.
  • A layer of padding polyester is glued onto the foam rubber, on which you need to make holes according to the same markings.
  • Carefully stretch the fabric and fix it with a furniture stapler. For complex headboard shapes, you also need to use a needle and thread, pulling the fabric from the center and evenly distributing it to the edges.
  • Cover the buttons with fabric or leave them as is - it all depends on the design of the buttons.
  • We sew the finished buttons into the designated sockets and secure them with strong threads - starting from the center, continuing horizontally on both sides.
  • It is difficult to fix the thread on the plywood; it is better to use the same stapler staples. We entangle the thread between them and securely fasten them. The headboard is ready!

You can make holes with a drill in foam rubber and plywood at once, but to do this, you need a special attachment for the drill. In addition, this method requires certain skills - one mistake and you can ruin everything. A soft headboard can transform your bed, your bedroom and your mood. Making it is not at all difficult, you just need to carefully study the video and master class. It will take you no more than a day to make such a bed update, and for the option without screeds you only need a couple of hours.

In every bedroom, the bed takes center stage. After all, this is the place where we relax after a hard day at work, watch TV, read books and sleep. Therefore, the design of this piece of furniture should be given special importance. A DIY headboard will allow you to create maximum coziness, a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere in the bedroom.

In this article we will talk about how you can decorate your sleeping area in an original and colorful way with an aesthetically attractive and functional headboard. The most important thing is to use a creative approach and find your own individual style using non-standard solutions.

You can make the following options for the head of your bed:

  • Metal. This is the most “ancient” type of backrest. Here you can use various forged elements of any design and shape. It is suitable for many interior design styles. For example, such as Scandinavian, classical, Romanesque and others.

  • Soft headboard. This is the simplest option for decorating a bed. Almost anyone can do it. You don't even need to have special skills here. Just listen to your imagination. Most often, such a headboard has the shape of a rectangle.

  • Wooden headboard. This is a classic option. The style of the entire bedroom directly depends on how you process the wood.

How to make a headboard with your own hands

All you need is to imagine the future design of the backrest, purchase all the necessary materials and spend a little of your time. We will tell you in more detail about what options you can build yourself later in the article.

How to make a soft headboard

Do you want to creatively decorate the interior of your bed, making it truly cozy and comfortable? You can always make a soft headboard with your own hands. The options for execution here are simply unlimited.

The headboard can be functional to lean on, as well as decorative. In any case, the bed looks much more beautiful with it than without it. You can always lean on the soft headboard and comfortably read a book before going to bed, or watch TV.

The headboard of such a bed is completely covered with fabric, under which there is soft foam rubber. Using various screeding techniques will allow you to achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance. As for the fabric itself, you should choose calmer colors, because this is a bedroom in which a relaxing environment should reign. A very bright print will strain your eyes and make you even more tired.

As materials you will need:

  • fabric or leather;
  • plywood;
  • foam;
  • glue;
  • stapler

We cut out the desired shape from a plywood sheet using a jigsaw or wood saw. We lay the required amount of padding polyester or foam rubber around the entire perimeter. It must be a single piece so that pits do not form and the appearance of the finished product does not deteriorate. We fasten it with a stapler or glue. After this we cover it with fabric or leather. You can nail decorative nails around the perimeter, make a “carriage tie”, arrange everything in the form of pillows - there are a lot of options. We will talk about them below in the article.

How to make a curved headboard

It will also be soft. The only difference here is the wavy relief of the headboard. It can be absolutely anything you see it as. As a result of such a wooden headboard, your bedroom will acquire a respectable appearance, chic and wealth. The suede upholstery looks especially attractive. The perimeter of the headboard can be decorated with decorative stones, carnations or patterns.

Before you start creating a masterpiece, you need to draw a sketch of it on paper. It is better to do this in real size on whatman paper. The resulting template is easily transferred to a plywood piece.

As for the design option, there can be two of them: carriage screed or smooth. In the latter case, there is nothing complicated: attach the foam rubber to a figured sheet of plywood, trim off the excess, cover everything with fabric and fasten it on the back side along the entire perimeter, not forgetting to tighten it. The fabric will wrinkle where it bends. They should be given special attention and mounted in such a way that they are not visible on the front part.

Making a quilted headboard using the carriage screed technique

Do you want originality and sophistication? The headboard in the form of a “carriage screed” (Capitone) looks especially attractive and interesting. To do this you will need the following materials:

  • a piece of plywood of the size you need;
  • dense foam rubber with synthetic padding;
  • textile;
  • stapler, drill, crochet hook, knife, scissors;
  • buttons and a strong lace to secure them.

The manufacturing process itself is simple and consists of the following steps:

  1. The first thing to do is build a new headboard using boards and plywood. You can use the old one, but to do this, you need to clean it of all the old upholstery.
  2. Marking the holes through which the button lace will be threaded. To do this, you should use a ruler (roulette). Do everything as accurately as possible, otherwise you will not achieve a positive result.
  3. Drilling plywood in the designated places using a drill.
  4. We cut out a piece of foam rubber around the perimeter of the entire headboard blank. It is fastened with a special construction stapler.
  5. Cut a single piece of textile to the size of the headboard. Leave a margin of approximately 25 cm around the edges.
  6. The next stage is more labor-intensive - attaching the buttons. They must first be wrapped in pieces of similar fabric and glued on. It is worth using high-quality glue so that the textile does not come off over time.
  7. After the buttons have dried, take a long needle and lace (thick thread) and sew them to the headboard. We tie the button (covered with textile) well and use a needle to sew it on. The needle should be held strictly straight and move from the textile to the back wall of the headboard. We fasten everything firmly to another regular large button on the back side.
  8. When all the buttons are secured, we form a fold. It must come from above. And so on every button. After every 4th button, we stretch the material over the end of the headboard and attach the resulting folds with a stapler. As a result, you should get small diamond shapes from the folds.
  9. We fasten the fabric around the entire perimeter of the headboard, stretching it well. To make the corners as beautiful as possible, we make textile folds (the upper part is pulled over the lower part). Excess fabric near the legs must be trimmed.
    The appearance of such a bed will delight you every day and promote a relaxing mood. What else do you need in a bedroom?

How to make a headboard out of pillows

Don’t want to spend a lot on material, but at the same time transform your sleeping place? Use unnecessary pillows. It is always bright, fun, original, comfortable, unique and funny. A bed headboard with pillows is perfect for a country style interior. You won’t have any difficulties in making it here.

All you need to do is assemble a bunch of cushions and attach them with glue to the appropriate size of plywood. Also, you can make them yourself using small scraps of fabric with foam rubber. To do this, you cut the textiles into the required small sizes and form pillows from them and foam rubber. Next, they should be glued to the plywood. The result will definitely delight you with its originality, beauty and creativity.

How to make a leather headboard

Do you like everything stylish, modern and luxurious? Then a leather headboard for a bed is the best option. With it, your sleeping place will certainly become the main decoration in the bedroom. This will also save money, since a leather bed in a store will cost you a lot.

Leather as a material has the following undeniable advantages:

  • solidity;
  • long service life;
  • excellent dirt-repellent properties;
  • easy care;
  • aesthetic appeal of the interior.

But it is important to choose the right material for upholstery. The skin should not be very thick (up to 3 mm), elastic and without defects. In this case, it will be very easy for you to work with it. When covering, do not allow moisture to enter.

How to sew a cover for the headboard

This work can be done from any material: fabric, leather, leatherette, suede, etc. During the sewing process, you should make an allowance of a couple of centimeters on all sides (based on the thickness of the filler). Thanks to this, you can easily put the cover on a pre-designed or existing headboard. It is necessary to sew from the wrong side.

As for the filler (sintepon or foam rubber), it can be added after putting on the cover. A case decorated with decorative stitches, buttons, buttons and other decors looks very nice. But for this you must have the appropriate sewing technique in order to make a beautiful and original cover for the head of the bed. In any case, there are no restrictions here, except for the flight of your design ideas.

How to design a bed headboard

If you want to plunge into the life of the French province, you can choose the Provence style. This is a stylization of the life of an old village. A lot of textiles are used here, with flowers depicted on them. Light colors predominate, such as blue, light green, lavender, white and others.

A bed with lighting at the top of the headboard will look original. This light can be used as a night light. Also, it will create a romantic and relaxing atmosphere.

A fabric headboard in the same color as the curtains in the bedroom will look very nice.

If your bedroom does not have large spaces, then every square meter is golden. A wonderful find in this option can be shelves located above the head of the bed. Most often there are several of them. These shelves will very conveniently accommodate your favorite books that you like to read before bed, family photos, as well as many different decors.

Do you want to make your bedroom as spacious as possible and, at the same time, beautiful? Then it’s worth rationally using all the available space. To save space, an excellent option could be a bed with a wardrobe at the head. It is located around the perimeter of the bed. You can make it yourself, to order, or purchase ready-made headsets. In any case, the headboard of the bed, located in the niche of the closet, will look very attractive and practical.

The headboard of the bed looks very nice against the wall with different designs. This can be: paintings, decorative modeling and much more. The main thing is not to use very bright colors. Above all, the bedroom should be calm and relaxing.

As for attaching the headboard, it can be screwed to the wall or to the frame of the bed itself. Also, it can be a free-standing structure. It all depends on its size and design.

As you have seen, making a headboard with your own hands is not that difficult. The main thing is to approach this issue with maximum responsibility and carefully carry out each stage. At the same time, you won’t spend much of your time. But as a result, you will get an original and functional headboard that no one else has.

The headboard of the bed is an integral part of bedroom furniture. It not only makes the furniture comfortable, but also plays an important role in the interior of the bedroom.

You can always rely on this detail. After all, we all love to watch TV with a cup of tea before going to bed. It is much more comfortable to do this while sitting.

To do this, you need a support, which is the headboard.

It also protects the wall and wallpaper from rubbing, which will preserve the freshness and beauty of the finish.

You can make a headboard with your own hands for:

  • soft;
  • figured;
  • in the technique of carriage screed;
  • from shreds;
  • from pillows and so on.

Upholstered headboard for bed

Let us present to you the simplest option that any man can do. Even those who do not have construction skills.

In order to make a soft headboard in a rectangular shape you need:

  • a rectangular piece of plywood (can be replaced with any shape, so the head of the bed will have a different shape);
  • thick fabric;
  • foam;
  • padding polyester;
  • construction stapler.

You will spend a maximum of 3 hours on such beauty, and if you do it more than one, then even less.

How to make a soft headboard for a bed

We take a plywood sheet, preferably thicker, and put two layers of foam rubber on it.

We take an unnecessary piece of fabric, put it on plywood and foam rubber so that it extends beyond their edges by about 15-20 centimeters, and fasten it with a stapler.

On top of the fabric we staple a beautiful flap that matches your home interior.

As you can see, the method is quite simple and fast, so in a few hours you will transform your bedroom.

DIY figured headboard

This headboard will also be soft, but will have a special relief that will add chic and richness.

For it we will need:

  • plywood sheet;
  • chalk or soap;
  • foam;
  • stapler;
  • unnecessary material;
  • upholstery fabric;
  • furniture nails.

It is better to choose a universal construction adhesive that can easily glue fabric and foam rubber.

We need chalk or soap to mark the fabric in order to cut out an even piece.

How to make a curved headboard

You need to start with a sketch from which you will make your drawing and markings. It can be of any shape. Usually a light relief is made.

If you have the necessary skills, you can cut out flowers and other patterns, but this is a rather difficult task.

We cut out our drawn blank from plywood, foam rubber and fabric. It’s worth first trying on a paper blank so that it fits into a common room or another room.

We do the same steps with the fabric.

Raise the head of the bed horizontally and start pulling the fabric from the back using staples.

Make cuts in the fabric so that it can perfectly match the relief of the plywood headboard.

Decorate the upholstery with furniture nails, securing them 1 centimeter from the edge of the head of the bed.

To make the second line of decorative decoration with carnations, mark with chalk, stepping back about 10 centimeters from the first line.

Nail the nails along the marked line.

Cover the back side with an unnecessary piece of fabric, securing it with a stapler.

Attach the headboard to the bed or wall. You can also simply place it on the floor near the edge of the bed, leaning against the wall.

Quilted headboard using carriage screed technique

Such a headboard will be soft and can be found quite often in many stores. This is considered a modern and interesting bed design.

We need all the same materials:

  • plywood;
  • foam;
  • stapler with staples;
  • air gun;
  • padding polyester;
  • textile;
  • cord;
  • large buttons with a fabric surface.

We take plywood and coat it with glue. Then we glue foam rubber to it, the thickness of which should be at least 5 centimeters.

Lay out a large sheet of paper and draw button holes on it. It is advisable to make them evenly around the entire perimeter.

Cut holes in paper or cardboard.

We apply the sheet to the foam rubber and use a felt-tip pen to outline the holes.

To transfer the holes to the foam rubber, you need to use a drill with an attachment.

You can glue padding polyester onto the foam rubber by making exactly the same holes as we did on the foam rubber.

If desired, you can do without padding polyester. It just makes the headboard softer.

We stretch the upholstery material and use a drill to make holes to the very end, since we will pull the cords on the buttons through the entire layer.

We pull the cord through the buttons and thread them through the hole. For convenience, you can use some kind of hook.

Tighten the cords well so that the buttons fit snugly against the upholstery of the head of the bed. We secure the ropes with a stapler.

Upholstered bed headboard made of rags

If you don't want to spend money on a large piece of upholstery material, you can replace it with various scraps.

This could be old jeans, dresses or any other clothing. Thus, this method will be very profitable and economical.

We need:

  • 2 sheets of plywood;
  • saw;
  • scissors;
  • filler for the headboard (foam rubber or synthetic winterizer);
  • scraps of fabric;
  • glue and adhesive tape;
  • stapler;
  • screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws

How to make a soft headboard from scraps

We draw a sheet of plywood into squares or rectangles. Next, take a saw or hacksaw and start cutting out these shapes.

We cut the foam rubber or padding polyester into the same shapes, but cut out a piece of fabric a few centimeters larger.

We glue each layer: plywood - foam rubber - fabric. The fabric should be stretched quite tightly so that wrinkles do not form. This can be done in the same way.

Secure the fabric again with a stapler to be secure.

Thus, we make all the shapes, creating elements of a soft headboard for a bed from scraps.

We lay out all the squares on the floor with their front sides, forming the future headboard. We glue them together with adhesive tape.

We take the second plywood and put it on our squares. Using a screwdriver and self-tapping screws, we attach each pad to a plywood sheet.

Select the length of the screw in advance so that it does not go right through and damage the head of the bed.

All is ready! You can attach it to the bed or wall, or just prop it nearby.

DIY headboard for a bed made from pillows

For this we will need many small pillows. It depends on their number, size and the desired size of the headboard.

We take pillows, which can be of different colors or plain ones, and sew them to one another at the corners.

You can attach the pillows to the wall using glue or nails. Glue in this case will be the best solution, since the nail can eventually rip through the cushion.

This will damage your headboard and may cause injury. Another great way to attach cushions to a curtain rod.

It can also work as a headboard for a bed. It's just as easy to make and looks gorgeous.

A decorative fence can also be a great idea. This option will not appeal to everyone, but rather to those who like to hang things on the head of the bed.

If you are not afraid of rigidity, then build a headboard from ordinary boards. Paint it or write your names, drawings, etc.

If you can draw beautifully, then you are lucky. You can create a fairy tale in your room.

Draw a fantastic headboard on the wall, wallpaper or graphite board. An unimaginable impression will be created.

When you come home from hard work, you want only one thing: to relax in a cozy atmosphere in your bedroom on your favorite bed. It is one of the most important places for us; you spend a third of your life on it, so it must be comfortable.

The very first thing that catches your eye when you enter the bedroom is the bed. It should be comfortable and beautiful.

But few people think about how to ensure this pleasure. If you are an exception to them, then this recipe for making a luxurious bed is for you. You can imagine an unimaginable variety of ideas for decorating this center of the bedroom, or you can start with the simplest thing - decorating the bed. But how to cover a bed with your own hands?

Of course, you can buy a ready-made bed in a store, but the assortment and price sometimes leave much to be desired. Resorting to the services of manufacturing the desired bed model to order is not very beneficial for our time and wallet. All that remains is to take this, at first glance, difficult and painstaking matter into your own hands.

Tools and materials

Choose fabric for finishing the bed that is non-staining and wrinkle-resistant.

For this process you will need:

  • foam;
  • batting;
  • plywood or hardboard;
  • construction stapler, scissors;
  • any fabric for covering;
  • glue.

The first thing to do is to select the size and shape of the chipboard for covering fabric. It should extend beyond the sheet by 20-40 cm. Thus, there will be a supply of fabric for fastening.

The same must be done with foam rubber. It should be 8-13 cm larger than the bed frame, regardless of whether it is round or square. At the same time, decide in advance which edge of your bed is soft or hard? Depending on this, choose the upholstery option.

Workflow Features

First upholstery method

Build a bed frame and nail plywood onto it.

You need to stuff plywood or hardboard onto a pre-prepared bed frame. At the same time, leave a distance of 5-7 cm at the top in order to secure the foam rubber. The foam rubber is stuffed on top of the plywood, while it is superimposed on the excess part of the plywood that was left in excess. It cannot be nailed without creating a quilted effect, so use a special glue.

When you have finished stuffing the foam rubber, you need to stretch the fabric on top and nail it to the bottom with staples at the bottom of the frame. In the corners you need to gather the fabric into 2 folds, which you place on top of each other and staple them in place at their junction. You can’t stuff staples on top of each other, otherwise it will just be a waste of them. The more you use them, the better the fabric will hold up. Try to nail the staples as far from the edge of the fabric as possible.

Stretch the fabric over the foam and secure it with a stapler,

Here you can also cut out excess fabric, just do not cut off too much, because then arrows and other types of damage may appear on the surface of the fabric. Or the upholstery may simply fall off the frame.

Under no circumstances should the upholstery fabric be stretched too tightly; the seams should not bend. If the pattern or thread strips lie flat and you can't pull a fold in the fabric, you can be sure that you did everything right. Make sure you choose the right fabric.

For different types of upholstery, there are different fabrics to suit your needs. If you plan to place the mattress in a recessed frame, which would be suitable for a round bed, use this upholstery method.

Second upholstery method

Attach the foam rubber to the prepared sheet of plywood using glue or a stapler.

In the same way as in the first case, the frame is covered first with plywood, and then with foam rubber. However, if the sides of your cover will not be even, meaning you will use cords and buttons to create indentations in the material, it is recommended to use batting. This will not create a gap at the top of the bed. Just upholster the frame in the same way; you can add additional fabric at the bottom to hide the fastening points. You can nail plywood to the bottom. Thus the frame is completely upholstered. We put the finished mattress on top and the process is over.

The process of making recesses with buttons in the trim is not particularly complicated. You can draw out the foam rubber in advance, nail it and thread the threads through the fabric, which will subsequently stretch the fabric and buttons will be sewn on top. Or you can drive decorative nails into the places marked on the fabric and simply glue the buttons. They should be the same color as the upholstery, this way you can create a quilted covering.

It is best to choose materials made from natural ingredients.

Upholstery fabric should be selected depending on your preferences. You can upholster beds with velor, velvet, microfiber, jacquard, flock.

If you have allergies, then cover the bed with natural materials, for example, cotton or linen. The latest options can be used for the warm season as replacement upholstery. Cotton does not collect dust, and linen is a durable material. Upholstery colors may also vary depending on the time of year. In summer the upholstery is light, in winter it is dark. At the same time, they should be combined with curtains or decorative pillows or a bedspread.

Before you start covering the bed, carefully inspect the frame for cracks and chips.

  1. Before removing the old covering, be sure to inspect the frame for cracks or damage.
  2. In most cases, it is recommended to change both the padding and the springs. There may be defects in it, or a lot of dust has formed there over time. It is best to additionally secure the new filler with muslin.
  3. Choose fabric with a protective coating. Do not upholster it with nap fabrics or elastic materials. They stretch, and you will be tired of changing the upholstery. Colored designs on fabric are not recommended. When upholstering at home, minor defects will be noticeable.
  4. Make a removable cover or upholstery for the bed.

This way it can be easily cleaned and changed in the off-season or when worn out.

If you want to make a cover that can later be removed, then you need to measure the frame in advance and create a pattern according to it. Then sew a cover to size from pieces of fabric. It is better to use elastic bands for the sides of the cover.

To make an upholstered bed beautiful for a long time, it is best to make the upholstery in 2 layers.

The first is non-removable, and the second is used as a cover. It is better to make permanent upholstery from high-strength fabric such as cotton, silk, linen, satin, or bamboo fabric. In this case, the outer upholstery must be related to the inner one so that no friction or static occurs between them.

There are many main mistakes to avoid. If the wood of the frame is of poor quality, then cracks may appear on it, which will subsequently lead to tears in the expensive fabric. Therefore, never cover a bed made of poor wood with expensive fabric or leather without a base upholstery. When making removable upholstery, carefully select a fabric that will not stretch. Therefore, it is very important to choose high-quality fabric for covers. If you want to wash the upholstery, then make sure that the fabric is washed well and does not lose its color.

If you want to further decorate your updated frame, make a headboard for it. In the same way, make upholstery, only for pieces of plywood folded in half, and attach it all to the bed or to the wall. And our ideal bed is ready. Thus, you don’t have to buy a new bed, but simply update its upholstery. Once all the work is done, you will look differently at your updated bed.

The bed is the main and central piece of furniture in any bedroom.

People spend about a third of their lives sleeping, which means that the choice of bed and bedding must be approached seriously and responsibly. Designers are constantly creating innovative models of mattresses and beds, so there is a huge variety of bedroom furnishings. Most of them not only fulfill the main purpose of providing a person with a comfortable sleep, but also help decorate the interior, giving it a certain style and originality.

Installing or updating a headboard is the fastest and easiest way to transform the overall mood of your bedroom. Among the various options, the most popular is a soft headboard for a bed, which, due to its design, gives the sleeping area a special coziness, softens sharp corners, and sets the mood for a comfortable rest. Of course, this part can be purchased in stores separately or as an element of the bed frame, but many prefer to make a soft headboard with their own hands, giving free rein to their imagination and creative ideas. We offer several master classes on how to make an interesting headboard, and also look at other models of craftsmen and designers for inspiration.

DIY soft headboard “Carriage screed”

Carriage binding is a decorating technique that was widely used in the 18th century to decorate carriages (hence the name). Today this method is used for upholstery of upholstered furniture and interior items. The modern name for the carriage screed is capitonne. In order for the result to look truly impressive, it is recommended to use expensive, rich material that looks good with numerous folds, for example, leather, velvet, velor, faux suede. Light cotton with small flowers is a completely unsuitable fabric.

The screed pattern itself can be made in the form of squares or diamonds; buttons covered with the same fabric, beads, and crystals in color or contrast are used as rivets.

Materials and tools:

  • plywood for the base (furniture board);
  • high-quality fabric (with a margin of 25-30 cm more than the length and width of the plywood base);
  • foam rubber about 5 cm thick (the size of a plywood sheet);
  • padding polyester;
  • covered eyelet buttons;
  • drill for drilling plywood;
  • sharp knife;
  • Crochet hook;
  • universal glue;
  • strong lace (rope, twine to fit the buttons through the eyelet);
  • furniture stapler with thickened staples;
  • scissors;
  • wall fastenings and screws.

Progress

Take a sheet of plywood, you can use a rectangular one or cut it into an interesting shape. In this example, two boards are used with dimensions: 200 cm by 60 cm and 140 cm by 60 cm. Cut the foam rubber to the size of the plywood base. Mark the places where the buttons are attached on the foam rubber, for example, in three rows in a checkerboard pattern.

A fun way to make holes is to use a heated metal tube. Heat the tube on the stove for 3-4 minutes, then make holes with quick movements. You can make 2-3 holes at a time, then heat the tube again for 15-20 seconds. Before doing this, be sure to place a board under the foam rubber so as not to spoil the floor.

Place the foam rubber on the plywood and use a pencil to mark the locations for the holes. Drill the holes with an 8mm wood drill bit.

Glue the foam to the plywood. Make sure that the holes in the foam and the plywood match.

Place a layer of padding polyester on top with a margin of 3-5 cm on each side. Lay the fabric on the padding polyester with a margin of at least 10 cm on each side. Turn the plywood over and secure the fabric with a furniture stapler on the reverse side.

Prepare your buttons. You can cover them with fabric yourself or take them to a workshop. Thread a cord at least 15 cm long into each button and tie a knot. This project required 62 buttons. Take a crochet hook and insert it into the hole from the plywood side.

From the front, on the fabric side, feel for the hook. Check the distance from the adjacent button with a ruler and make a small hole with nail scissors. Hook the lace with the button and thread it through the hole.

Pull the cord well and staple it securely to the back.

Attach the fasteners with self-tapping screws and hang them on the wall. Ready!

Upholstered headboard with a pattern of nail heads

Materials and tools:

  • plywood sheet;
  • a piece of thick fabric (canvas for paintings was used in this project);
  • nails;
  • glue (spray glue was used in the project);
  • padding polyester or batting;
  • scissors;
  • furniture stapler.

Progress

Cut a rectangle of the desired size from a sheet of plywood.

Place 3-4 layers of batting or padding polyester, leaving a margin of 10 cm on the sides.

Using spray adhesive, glue the first layer of batting to the plywood, then subsequent layers to the previous one.

Staple the batting to the back, keeping the material taut.

Turn the headboard right side out. Spray the surface of the batting with spray adhesive and, starting on one side, carefully roll the fabric onto the batting. Press and smooth the fabric well so that there are no bubbles, folds or distortions.

After the glue has dried, attach the canvas to the back of the plywood. Stretch the fabric well, wrap it around the frame and secure it with a furniture stapler.

Using nails you can make any ornament, including one imitating a carriage tie. For this headboard, we made a neat thin frame around the perimeter. To make one, mark two points with a pencil in adjacent corners at equal distances from the sides.

Drive the nails in there, but not all the way, but so that they stick out above the surface. Tie the string around the head of one nail, pull it tight and tie it around the second. So we made a straight line so as not to draw on light fabric with a pencil.

Then use a pencil along the line to mark places to drive in nails at equal distances from each other. Make small marks that will overlap the nail head.

Hammer the nails. Instead of nails, you can use furniture tacks.

Attach the headboard to the wall using fasteners.

DIY soft headboard with cushions, tile imitation

Materials and tools:

  • a large rectangular sheet of plywood for the base (in the project 150 cm by 75 cm);
  • small plywood squares (for this project, 18 pieces measuring 25 by 25 cm were needed);
  • piece of fabric;
  • padding polyester;
  • furniture stapler;
  • scissors;
  • glue.

Progress

Prepare the plywood pieces. In large construction supermarkets, you can ask them to cut the plywood into pieces of the required size. Cut the piece of fabric into 18 squares (in your case the number may be different). The squares should have a margin of 5-10 cm on each side.

Place the plywood squares in the middle of the fabric.

Using a furniture stapler, attach the edges of one side. Be careful that the staple does not pierce all the way through the plywood and fabric. You can insert the staples at a slight angle.

Make a fold in the corner, stretch the fabric well and secure the corner with staples.

So, you have secured one side and two corners, making something like a “pocket”. Now, adding a staple on each side, fill the space between the plywood and the fabric with batting or padding polyester. Try to ensure that there is practically no filler closer to the edges, and there is a plump “slide” in the middle.

Having filled the square with padding polyester and secured the sides, secure the last remaining side and corners with staples in the same way.

Do the same for the rest of the squares. If the fabric has a pattern, try to keep it the same on all parts. You can also use different fabrics to create a multi-colored mosaic composition.

When all the squares are ready, place them on a large sheet of plywood and glue them with universal glue. Make sure the pattern is positioned correctly. Try not to have a large distance between the squares; the joints should be barely noticeable.
