What is a cyclone and why is it needed

In the workshop, there is almost always a need to remove garbage of a sufficiently large fraction. Sawdust, small scraps, metal shavings - all this, in principle, can be caught by a regular vacuum cleaner filter, but with a high probability it will quickly become unusable. In addition, it will not be superfluous to remove liquid waste.

The cyclone filter uses aerodynamic vortex to bind specks of different sizes. Spinning in a circle, the garbage manages to stick together to such a consistency that it can no longer be carried away by the air flow and settles at the bottom. This effect almost always occurs if the air flow passes through a cylindrical container at a sufficient speed.

Such filters are included in the kit of many industrial vacuum cleaners, but their cost cannot be called affordable for the layman. At the same time, the range of tasks solved with the help of home-made devices is not at all narrower. A handicraft cyclone can be used both in conjunction with planers, perforators or jigsaws, and for removing sawdust or chips from various types of machines. In the end, even simple cleaning with such a device is much easier, because the bulk of dust and debris settles in a container, from where it can be easily removed.

Difference Between Wet and Dry Cyclone

To create a swirling flow, the main requirement is that the air entering the tank does not follow the shortest path to the exhaust hole. To do this, the inlet pipe must have a special shape and be directed either to the bottom of the tank or tangentially to the walls. The exhaust channel, according to a similar principle, is recommended to be made rotatable, optimally if it is directed towards the cover of the device. The increase in aerodynamic drag due to pipe bends can be neglected.

As already mentioned, the cyclone filter has the potential to remove liquid waste as well. With a liquid, everything is somewhat more complicated: the air in the pipe and the cyclone is partially rarefied, which contributes to the evaporation of moisture and its breakdown into very small drops. Therefore, the inlet pipe must be located as close as possible to the surface of the water or even lowered under it.

In most washing vacuum cleaners, air is supplied to the water through a diffuser, so that any moisture contained in it is effectively dissolved. However, for greater versatility with a minimum number of alterations, it is not recommended to use such a scheme.

We make from improvised materials

The simplest and most affordable option for a cyclone tank would be a bucket of paint or other building mixtures. The volume should be comparable to the power of the vacuum cleaner used, approximately one liter for every 80-100 watts.

The bucket lid must be intact and hermetically put on the body of the future cyclone. It will have to be finalized by making a couple of holes. Regardless of the material of the bucket, the easiest way to make holes of the desired diameter is to use a homemade compass. Two self-tapping screws must be screwed into a wooden rail so that their tips are 27 mm apart from each other, no more, no less.

The centers of the holes should be marked 40 mm from the edge of the cover, it is desirable that they be as far apart as possible. Both metal and plastic are excellently scratched with such a home-made tool, forming smooth edges with virtually no burrs.

The second element of the cyclone will be a set of sewer elbows at 90º and 45º. In advance, we draw your attention to the fact that the position of the corners must correspond to the direction of air flow. Their fastening in the housing cover is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. The knee is inserted all the way into the side of the socket. Silicone sealant is pre-applied under the side.
  2. On the reverse side, a rubber sealing ring is pulled with force onto the socket. To be sure, you can additionally compress it with a screw clamp.

The inlet pipe is located with a narrow turning part inside the bucket, the socket is on the outside almost flush with the lid. The knee must be provided with another turn at 45º and directed obliquely down and tangentially to the wall of the bucket. If the cyclone is made with the expectation of wet cleaning, the extreme elbow should be increased by cutting the pipe, reducing the distance from the bottom to 10-15 cm.

The exhaust pipe is located in the opposite position and its socket is located under the bucket lid. You also need to insert one knee into it so that the air intake occurs at the wall or make two turns for suction from under the center of the lid. The latter is preferable. Do not forget about the o-rings, for more reliable fixation and to prevent turning of the knees, they can be wrapped with plumbing tape.

How to adapt the device for machines and tools

To be able to draw in waste when working with hand and stationary tools, a system of adapters is required. Typically, a vacuum cleaner hose ends in a curved tube, the diameter of which is comparable to the nozzles for power tool dust bags. In extreme cases, you can seal the joint with several layers of double-sided mirror tape wrapped with vinyl tape to eliminate stickiness.

With stationary equipment, everything is more complicated. Dust vents have a very different configuration, especially for homemade machines, so we can only give a few useful recommendations:

  1. If the dust extraction of the machine is designed for 110 mm or larger hose, use plumbing adapters with a diameter of 50 mm to connect the corrugated hose of the vacuum cleaner.
  2. For docking with a dust trap of home-made machines, it is convenient to use press fittings for 50 mm HDPE pipes.
  3. When designing the dust collector housing and outlet, use the convection flow created by the moving parts of the tool for greater efficiency. For example: the branch pipe for removing sawdust from a circular saw should be directed tangentially to the saw blade.
  4. Sometimes it is required to provide dust extraction from different sides of the workpiece, for example, for a band saw or milling cutter. Use 50 mm sewer tees and corrugated drain hoses.

Which vacuum cleaner and connection system to use

Usually, a vacuum cleaner for a homemade cyclone is not chosen independently, but the one that is available is used. However, there are a number of limitations in addition to the power mentioned above. If you want to continue using the vacuum cleaner for domestic purposes, then at a minimum you will need to find an additional hose.

The beauty of the sewer elbows used in the design is that they ideally fit the diameter of the most common hoses. Therefore, the spare hose can be safely cut into 2/3 and 1/3, a shorter segment must be joined to the vacuum cleaner. The other, longer section, in this form, is refueled into the socket of the cyclone inlet pipe. The maximum that is required in this place is to seal the connection with silicone sealant or plumbing tape, but usually the planting density is quite high. Especially with the o-ring.

To pull a short piece of hose onto the exhaust pipe, the extreme part of the corrugated pipe will have to be leveled. Depending on the diameter of the hose, it may be more convenient to tuck it in. To do this, the device has a special container filled with water, and dust particles passing through it are absorbed by the liquid, settling on the bottom. This is indeed a very effective method, because when using such a system, pollution elements with a diameter of up to 0.3 microns are retained! In addition, there are no consumables in such vacuum cleaners (dust bags, filters, couplings, etc.), and the user can use them for both dry and wet cleaning. Some models are even capable of generating negative ions! This class includes all VR W-series vacuum cleaners using the patented Eco-Active Water Filtration System.
Washing vacuum cleaners are a separate variety, but due to their high cost and difficulty in operation, they are not very popular.
The use of water cleaning systems has some subjective limitations, for example, the need to wash the container after each cleaning, which is somewhat burdensome. Many users prefer to clean once a month, but still keep the suction power at its original level. The fact is that the efficiency of the vacuum cleaner decreases as the filters get dirty - the accumulated debris blocks the air flow and the power drops. An attempt to solve this problem was the "Cyclone" technology, which we will discuss in more detail.

So, how does a conventional vacuum cleaner with a cyclone system work?

Actually, the name of the technology - "Cyclone" - already gives an idea of ​​its essence. The air inside the container spirals, forming a vortex that picks up dust particles and transfers them to a special plastic container. The currently existing bagless vacuum cleaners have, as a rule, one cyclone and one or two containers, inside of which (or immediately after them) there is a HEPA filter. But such a device of the system does not solve the problem of power loss: dust very easily enters the filter, quickly polluting and clogging it. In a word, the HEPA filter bears the main cleaning load, the cyclone only separates the coarse dust, and if the efficiency decreases, the user must clean or replace the filter to continue working.
VR engineers managed to eliminate these shortcomings by developing a unique "VR Multicyclone" system, which has no analogues (which is confirmed by an international patent issued for the use of this technology).

The essence of "VR Multicyclone" technology:

"VR Multi-cyclone" cleaning system consists of two stages, with 7-12 cyclones (VC-C02AV model has 12 cyclones and VC-C03AV has 7 cyclones): specially designed by VR, exclusive dust containers are divided into two sections, one for cyclonic cleaning, and the other for storing the collected dust.
Dust enters the dust collector to go through the first stage of cleaning. Thus, the cleaning efficiency is much higher than that of vacuum cleaners with one cyclone, because after the second stage, 97 - 99% of the dust is removed! But that's not all: at the last stage, the remaining 1-3% of contaminants are captured by HEPA filters located in front of the motor, providing 100% filtration.

So, "VR Multicyclone" is really capable of removing 97-99% of dust from the air, and HEPA filters are used only for the final cleaning of the smallest particles that could avoid cyclones. As a result, the suction power of the vacuum cleaner does not change throughout the cleaning process, users do not have to constantly clean or replace filters, and the service life of HEPA barriers is significantly increased, because, thanks to the highest degree of cleaning, they practically do not get dust, not to mention large or pointed objects.


Thus, compared to existing models of vacuum cleaners (using a single cyclone or dust collector), "VR Multicyclone" system has significant advantages:
1. Bag and even bagless vacuum cleaners quickly lose suction power. "VR Multicyclone" works without loss of suction power!
2. Conventional cyclone vacuum cleaner has only one dust container, with one cleaning cyclone. The VR Multicyclone vacuum cleaner uses a specially designed two-chamber dust container with 7-12 cyclones, as well as two HEPA filters, achieving 100% cleaning efficiency.

Let's start with the myth that the dust collector performs primary air purification. Perhaps this is what happens in a parallel universe, but in our reality, a container remains a container.

Bags and containers are needed as storage for the collected garbage. None of them is designed to purify the air. For example, a plastic dust container can stand in the presence of a cyclone system, and with an aquafilter, and with a separator filtration system for vacuum cleaners.

The only more or less filter-like dust collector is a bag. Cloth and paper trap dust particles, preventing them from passing to the next levels of filtration. The only problem is the effectiveness of this method.

The material is not able to retain microparticles of dust, wool, pollen. It is these microscopic elements that provoke the symptoms of allergies and asthma. Therefore, the bag cannot be called a filter that purifies the air, but only a kind of obstacle for large debris.

Filters perform a cleansing function at different stages of air passage through them. The expected result is getting rid of the smallest specks.

An easy way to see the difference between a filtration system and a dust collector is to keep one. In the absence of filters, the air will simply be distilled through the hose, then into the vacuum cleaner body, and blown out. Thus, you can inflate all the debris around the room and burn the motor.

If you leave the filters, removing the container, then large rubbish will get stuck at all levels of filtration. After a couple of seconds, the suction force will decrease, and the load on the engine will reach a critical point.

Air purification from large debris

Regardless of the control system of the vacuum cleaner, the systems for cleaning large debris are the first to hit with dirt. There are only a few air filtration systems in the first stage.

Cyclone system

Works on the principle of air turbulence. Dust sticks to the walls of the conical intermediate collector. At the same time, relatively clean air remains in the center of the swirl, which enters the next filters in line.

Such a cleaning system has been used for a long time, but so far they have not figured out how to increase the percentage of efficiency. At the moment, the maximum indicator of the cyclone system in vacuum cleaners
- 97% and then only in accordance with the statements of the manufacturers themselves. The rest, including large, dust falls on the fine filters, clogging them.

As the container fills up, the suction power of the vacuum cleaner weakens. This leads to a decrease in the quality of filtration, and, accordingly, to a deterioration in the cleaning result.

Aquafilter

Aquafilter is a reservoir with water. The sucked-in air passes through water, "washing away" dust and debris. As the apparatus operates, it is possible to observe the process of water pollution, controlling it. As soon as it ceases to be transparent, change it. So the quality of cleaning will not decrease, and every centimeter of the floor or carpet will be cleaned to a speck of dust.

When first used in a room that was cleaned with a conventional vacuum cleaner, the water in the aquafilter will have to be changed several times. It's not so much about the quality of the vacuum cleaner's cyclone system, but about the clarity of what is happening. Hidden filters get dirty gradually and make less impression, and it's expensive to change them. The water system does not hide anything, because the change of the filtration material occurs immediately, without delay.

The quality of air filtration is about the same as in the case of a cyclone. Unfortunately, as in the first case, the indicator drops if the vacuum cleaner has a HEPA filter on which water droplets fall. In this case, the dust sticks to the filter and stays there. In the dark and warm, microorganisms actively multiply. The next time they are turned on, they are carried around the premises along with no longer purified air.

Separator system

Performs cleaning due to the presence of a turbine and a high-revving motor. The separator, which is the turbine, spins up to 20, in rare models and up to 26 thousand revolutions per minute. This part of the vacuum cleaner is immersed in the water dust container. During rotation, pressure is created that drowns the dust in the water.

Microscopic dust can get into the air bubbles that appear when the turbine rotates. In the case of an aquafilter, these dust particles are returned to the room. The separator system prevents this by breaking the bubbles.

No more filters are required for the successful operation of a true separator cleaning system. The most advanced technology of the German Pro-Aqua separator vacuum cleaner today allows you not to spend money on additional purchases of filters, since it itself copes with pollution by 99.9997%.

The expensive built-in vacuum cleaner system also shows not bad environmental performance, however, such devices are deprived of most of the exclusive features that a separator vacuum cleaner can boast of. We are talking about deep cleaning and air purification. At the same time, the device with separator air filtration is much lower in price. Plus, no additional room is required to dump debris and dust.

At the outlet, the air is humidified, which is important in winter. There is no unpleasant smell of burnt dust, since it does not reach the engine compartment.

Additional options include air ionization and aromatization.

Fine and coarse filters

Similar filtration systems for vacuum cleaners are located in front of the engine compartment and at the outlet. In the first case, they prevent dust from entering the engine, in the second, the final air purification takes place.

Contamination of engine compartment cleaners, that is, coarse filters, is easy to determine by the smell of “fried” dust. When the microscopic channels become clogged, the contamination gets onto the hot motor. This causes the appearance of an unpleasant odor.

Microfilter

It has a flat shape, corresponding to the cassette into which it is inserted. Material - foam rubber or pressed microfiber.

Light color works as a kind of indicator of contamination. Gray is like yellow at a traffic light - it's time to get ready to change the microfilter. Dark gray means that you need to urgently stop using it. On average, the microfilter requires replacement every 3-4 months, but sometimes more often.

The degree of air purification is low, because, after the first use, small channels become clogged. In the future, less and less garbage is delayed. As an addition, fungi and bacteria begin to actively multiply inside the material, which does not contribute to the health of residents of an apartment or house.

More or less efficient operation of the microfilter is possible with its constant change. The cost of the cartridge is not high and it seems that this saves money. However, if we take the price of a yearly set of filters, then the amount is rather big.

HEPA

According to tests in brand new condition, the dust collection level is:

  • H 10 - up to 85%;
  • H 11 - up to 95%;
  • H 12 - up to 99.5%;
  • H 13 - up to 99.995%.

The filtering level is theoretically chosen by the user, but in reality you have to buy what is available. Marking must be indicated in the documentation attached to the product. Moreover, after 2-3 uses, the degree of purification by such a filter is reduced by more than 3 times.

According to the time of use, they distinguish:

  1. Disposable. Produced from paper with fiberglass impurities. Able to hold particles up to 0.3 microns in size. The disadvantage is the combination of cost and the need for constant replacement. At the same time, disposable HEPA filters are quite difficult to find even in large stores.
  2. reusable. Made of PTFE - a polymeric material that can be washed with water. The adoption of bath procedures should occur after each use, regardless of contamination. Manufacturers promise that such a filter will last from 3 to 6 months. But is it like this? From the point of view of common sense, no, but if you are interested, you can experience it for yourself.

Since disposable filters require a lot of attention and expense, reusable PTFE counterparts are more often purchased. Permanent HEPAs require constant care in the form of washing, drying and vacuuming.

The ingress of dust particles larger than 0.3 microns causes micro-tears on the filter surface. These damages are not visible to the eye, but are felt by the smell of dust after cleaning.
