Installing a lock on an interior door with your own hands. Detailed recommendations: how to insert a lock into an interior door How to insert a lock into a door

Putting a latch or a lock on a door is not that difficult. If you have a tool (nothing extra expensive or unusual is needed), you can do it in 30-40 minutes. And this is without experience. We will talk further about how to embed a lock into an interior door and how to install a latch.

Tools for inserting locks and latches

Embedding a lock into an interior door is not that difficult, but you will need the following tools for the job:

Not such an expensive and rare instrument. If you don’t have a drill and a crown, you can buy it at any construction supermarket or market. Since we will not be drilling into stone, there is no need to buy too expensive ones - ordinary crowns or wood drills.

Ready-made set for inserting locks into interior doors (on wood): feather drill, holder, crown

A few words about what is better - a crown or a feather drill. Cutting a hole in a door for a lock is easier and faster with a crown, and there are fewer chips. But working at the end with a crown is not so convenient, and the hole is larger than necessary. Drilling with a pen takes a little longer and there are more chips, but it’s easier to control the process. In general, there is no big difference, but most often, the hole in the canvas is made with a crown, and in the end - with a feather. But you can use a pen everywhere.

Another point: a standard crown has a diameter of 25 mm, and a hole of 22-23 mm is needed for the lock. The extra 2 mm can be easily covered by decorative trims, but with a very narrow door these extra millimeters can become critical.

How to embed a lock into an interior door: step-by-step photos

Before installing a lock or latch, you need to determine the height at which the handles will be located. The recommended height is 90-110 cm. A lock or latch is usually placed in this gap. But when installing a lock into an MDF door, you should not install the lock higher than a meter. The fact is that in budget models the wooden plank into which the lock is installed is 1 meter high. Higher up there will only be emptiness and you will have to re-drill the hole and figure out how to close the resulting hole. Once we have decided on the height, we can begin installation.

Recess for the locking part

Before embedding the lock into the interior door, mark the selected height on the door. Make this more convenient using a tape measure. We place a mark at the end and transfer it using a square or building level to both sides of the door leaf.

  1. Take the lock/latch and apply it to the end of the door so that the middle of the lock falls on the drawn line. We mark the width of the metal locking part and the level at which the lining ends.
  2. We take a 16 mm feather drill and apply it to the part of the lock that will be inserted into the door leaf. Using a marker or masking tape, or a piece of electrical tape, make a mark on the drill. This mark should be slightly further than the lock. We will use it to guide us to what depth to make the holes. This is especially important if the lock is installed against glass. Otherwise, you may drill too deep and damage the glass.

    We put a mark on the feather drill - this way we will control the drilling depth

  3. Having installed a feather drill, we make several holes one under the other, forming a recess for the lock. The number of holes depends on the size of the lock. In some models 4-6 are enough, in others you will need 8-10.
  4. The edges of the holes were uneven, and the wood had lifted in places. We take a chisel and remove the protruding wood fibers from the edges, working lightly and in depth (but don’t get too carried away).

  5. We take a regular 16 mm drill and put it in the drill. Use it to align the edges of the hole made. To do this, move it up and down, pressing lightly on one side or the other of the notch. This operation is needed to speed up the process, but the drill must be strictly controlled. If you are unsure, it is better to level the notch using a chisel and mallet.

  6. Insert the lock into the resulting hole. It is usually a little larger, so there are no problems. If necessary, using a chisel or drill it can be increased to the desired size.
  7. We set the lock to the desired position and attach it to the door leaf using two self-tapping screws (one at the top, the other at the bottom).

  8. Using a pencil or a utility knife, trace the perimeter of the lock lining. We remove the lock, take a chisel and remove 1-2 mm of wood, MDF or veneer inside the markings made.

The depth of the recess for the locking part depends on the thickness of the decorative strip. Usually they try to make sure that the strip is flush with the end of the door, but it may protrude a little. Shoot little by little as you work—it’s easier to edit it than to try to restore what you shot.

We put the handles

To finish installing the lock on the interior door, you need to make holes for installing handles. The work is much less than what has already been done, but accuracy is required. The mistakes are not too critical, although it is better to try to avoid them.

The handles come complete with self-tapping screws for wooden doors and tie bolts for installation in a metal door. It is better to replace the self-tapping screws from the kit - they are usually made of soft metal. Unless you bought a branded foreign lock, in which the screws are hardened. And so, buy several good screws with a diameter of 1.5-2 mm and a length of about 1 cm.

Some models have decorative overlays. We align them using a square.

Installing the lock latch

Locks for interior doors usually have a rotating latch on one side that locks the lock, and on the other side there is only a lining with a slot. That is, you can’t just open the door from the outside—you need a special key. Installing this part of the lock takes literally a couple of minutes, but there are some nuances.

That's it, inserting the lock into the interior door is almost finished, all that remains is to check the work.

Mate insert

The counter part must be installed clearly so that the doors do not play and there are no problems with closing. Therefore, we try to mark as accurately as possible and take a sharpened pencil.

You know everything about how to fit a lock into an interior door. The description takes up a lot of space, the process itself takes 25-30 minutes if you’re doing it for the first time. It will take more time if you level the holes with a chisel rather than with a drill. But the total duration will still not be more than an hour.

Latch installation features

It is not very often that a full-fledged lock is installed on interior doors. More often you have to install a latch - a handle with a tongue. It is smaller in size and inserting it is much faster and easier.

Installing a latch on an interior door is even faster and easier than a lock. There is very little work. You can do it in 20 minutes. And this is completely without experience.

Standard locks that are installed on interior doors often need to be replaced for various reasons. In addition, the finished canvas can be sold without a locking mechanism. Installing a door lock is a rather complicated operation that requires an understanding of the design of the device and knowledge of the nuances of its operation. The main factor determining installation features is the type of locking mechanism.

Design features are the main factor by which all locking devices used in interior walls are classified. Let's look at the most popular devices installed in interior doors.

Requires precision, but the mechanism is reliable and durable

Latch (regular). This type of locking device is the most widespread. Conventional latches are used everywhere in interior walls. Installing a lock on an interior door in this case is not difficult, which often attracts buyers. The peculiarity of this device is that its design includes a cylinder and a locking tongue controlled by a special mechanism. Most often, such locks are sold complete with a handle. Thus, in order to avoid mistakes during the installation process, it is necessary to study the instructions, which will answer the question of how to insert the handle into an interior door.

Latch with lock. The mechanisms that belong to this group are an improved modification of the previous type of locking devices. Their design has one more element - a latch. Its function is to hold the lock closed. Such products are ideal for interior doors.

Helpful information! Today you can find two types of latches equipped with a lock: push-button and lever. For use at home, it is recommended to pay attention to the second option.

Mortise mechanism. It is the second most popular among interior door locks. Installation into the canvas requires precision and care. Mortise devices are reliable and have a long service life. They are most often used for doors in personal offices and bedrooms. Unlike the previous type, these devices are opened using a key.

There are two types of mortise mechanisms. The first option provides the ability to unlock the door from both sides (key-key). In the second case, a combination is used that consists of a key and a turntable. In this situation, a separate insertion of the handle into the interior door is required. How to perform this operation? There are special step-by-step instructions for this.

Padlock. From an installation point of view, this option is the most acceptable. However, overhead devices do not meet modern safety standards. They can be easily damaged by mechanical action.

Magnetic lock. The cost of such devices is higher than the price of standard types of locking mechanisms. Their main advantage is quiet operation. That is why they are most often mounted on interior doors, which are intended for bedrooms and children's rooms. It is quite difficult to fit a lock into an interior door on your own. The cost of installing magnetic mechanisms depends on their design features and the type of door.

Level device. Such devices can provide good protection for the premises. They are opened with a key and are used not only for interior, but also for entrance panels.

Installing a door lock: flat and round devices

Most often, interior doors are equipped with locks that are most suitable for use in such conditions. These include flat and round mechanisms, which differ from each other in the shape of the case.

Flat interior locking devices are expensive. Their independent installation is accompanied by certain difficulties due to the design. However, such devices have one serious advantage: they provide a high degree of protection against intrusion by unauthorized persons.

It is worth noting one important feature of flat mechanisms: their installation weakens the door and frame. Before embedding a lock into a wooden door, it is necessary to determine its compatibility with the door leaf. Experts recommend installing flat products in existing doors. Canvases made from MDF are not suitable for installing full-fledged flat mechanisms. As a rule, shortened versions of devices are embedded in them.

Helpful information! When installing a flat mechanism in a door made of MDF, it is necessary to take into account that the thickness of the tongues should not be more than 15 mm. And also in this case, the restriction also applies to the end plate of the locking device. Its width should not exceed 24 mm.

Round locking mechanisms are the best option for installation at home. Therefore, they are most often found in interior doors. You do not need to have special skills to install a lock on a wooden door. The main advantage of such devices is their compatibility with any type of fabric. Most often, two types of handles are used for such mechanisms: halyard and knob. The second type of product is considered the most suitable. Knob handles are recommended for installation at home, as they are reliable and convenient.

Installing a door lock on interior doors: necessary tools

In order to independently install the locking mechanism, you need to prepare the appropriate tools. Installation of such devices does not require a large number of devices and accessories. The minimum set includes the following elements:

  • pencil (for marking);
  • measuring tape;
  • drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • construction knife;
  • chisels (10 and 20 mm);
  • set of drills;
  • masking tape.

Before starting installation, it is recommended to study the step-by-step instructions that will help you figure out how to install a lock on an interior door. It is worth noting that currently on sale you can find special kits that are used to insert locking mechanisms into panels made of various materials.

Kits for inserting locking devices, as a rule, include a feather drill with a cross-sectional index of 22 mm. This part is not suitable for organizing a hole for a latch. In this case, it is recommended to use a chisel.

Inserting a lock into an interior door: preparatory stage

The final result of self-installation of the locking mechanism depends on many factors. First of all, the degree of installation complexity is influenced by the type of door and the design of the lock itself. Experts advise drawing up a preliminary drawing of the device. It should contain information about the location of future holes required for fastening elements, handles, etc.

Note! If the old mechanism is being replaced with a new one, then it is recommended to study the instructions, which will allow you to understand the interior door with a handle.

The more detailed the drawing was drawn up, the less likely it is to make certain installation errors. Before starting installation, it is necessary to prepare the door for installation. The preparatory stage includes marking the canvas. This is the method that will allow you to correctly insert the lock into the interior door.

First of all, you need to determine the height of the lock above the floor. The standard value at which the locking mechanisms of interior doors are located is 1 m. If desired, you can reduce or increase the distance from the floor by 10 cm. The price of installing a lock on an interior door ranges from 1000 to 2500 rubles. The final cost depends on the type of lock and the nature of the work. Repair of locking mechanisms can cost approximately 1,500 rubles.

After determining the desired height of the device, it is necessary to seal the place where installation will be carried out with masking tape. Most often, a ready-made template is sold complete with locking mechanisms, which allows you to make precise markings for a specific model. It must be applied to the end and flat surface of the door.

How to insert a lock into an interior door: markings without a stencil

You can mark all the necessary points at which holes will be made for installing fasteners without using a template. To do this, there are instructions that you need to pay attention to. Marking is done using a pencil or chalk.

First of all, you need to measure a distance of 1 m from the floor. A horizontal mark is made at the desired point. Next you need to draw a vertical line. The intersection point of the two lines is the center of installation of the locking mechanism. The preparatory stage of inserting a lock into an interior door with your own hands requires special care. After marking the place where the locking device will be located, the points corresponding to the holes of the latch (on the end surface) and the door handle are determined.

Then you need to attach the body of the locking mechanism to the lines and mark the bottom edge of the device. Next you need to separate the planks. The distance in this case corresponds to the thickness of the lock. After the wiring, two parallel lines are marked, which should be located perpendicular to the horizontal lines at a distance of 5 cm.

Note! The accuracy of the measurements affects the correct installation of the lock and handle in the interior door. Errors in markings lead to various problems that interfere with the normal operation of the locking device. The lock is installed on the end side of the door leaf. In this case, it is necessary to clearly outline the central point.

How to embed a lock into a wooden door: organizing holes for the handle and lock mechanism

The next stage, which follows the marking of the door leaf, involves making holes for the handle and the locking mechanism. This process is also divided into several stages.

First you need to prepare the tool that will be used to make the holes. The easiest way to do this work is with a screwdriver and a special attachment (wood bit). The hole for the locking mechanism is made on the flat surface of the door leaf. Moreover, you should first make a recess on the outside, and then on the inside. This procedure will prevent damage to the electronic screwdriver.

The crown is used to create holes for the core and handle. Installation of the locking mechanism on the door is done using another attachment - a feather drill. It is used to make a hole for the latch on the end side of the blade. It is important to remember that the drill must be immersed into the wood at a right angle.

Then you need to take out the tool and use a construction knife to remove the outer layer of wood in accordance with the marked lines. After this, you need to use a chisel to create a groove for the crossbar. Its depth should not exceed the width of the crossbar frame. At the end, the latch is installed and secured using self-tapping screws.

Inserting a lock into an interior door: cutter for installation

The simplest way to install the locking mechanism involves the use of a milling device. The milling cutter is a vertical machine that is small in size and quite easy to use. In order to install a lock in the interior door using a milling device, you must first remove the door from its hinges and place it perpendicular to the floor (on its side).

Next, you will need to take measurements and set marks corresponding to the location of the mechanism tongue. The next step in installing a lock on an interior door with your own hands is to transfer the device parameters to the canvas. To do this, you need to place the lock on the surface of the door and trace its body with a pencil.

Note! In order to eliminate the possibility of making mistakes, it is recommended to study video materials that will help answer the question of how to embed a lock into an interior door. Videos and photos allow you to study all the nuances of the process in more detail.

Then you need to draw straight lines on the side of the canvas. After this, using the machine you need to make a recess for the lock. The next step involves changing the attachment on the milling machine and making a socket for the lock body. Exact execution of these instructions helps to correctly organize the opening for the locking mechanism. To check correct operation, you need to check the device with the place prepared for it.

How to install a lock on an interior door without using a cutter? The seat for the locking mechanism can be prepared without the use of special electrical equipment. Regular hand tools may also be useful for this job. It is important to remember that this method is not suitable in all cases. For example, installing a lock with a latch is impossible without the use of milling equipment.

Installing a locking mechanism with a cylinder: step-by-step instructions

Mechanisms that include a core (larva) are used in cases where the leaf is already equipped with a door handle. Such locking devices have a rectangular shape. The design features of these devices influence the degree of complexity of their installation. A person who does not have special skills in this area is recommended to study the installation instructions very carefully.

In this case, installing a door handle on the interior door is not required. This simplifies the workflow somewhat. First of all, to install the locking mechanism with the cylinder, you need to select the location of the device. It can be positioned above or below the handle.

Once the installation location has been selected, you must strictly follow the installation instructions. First, you need to make markings; to do this, draw a center line at the end of the canvas. Next, the standard procedure is carried out, which consists of transferring the outlines. After this, you need to make holes on the center line that have a small distance from each other. Using a drill, excess blade material is removed (between the holes). The result should be a socket for the locking mechanism.

The most suitable area for installing the device is under the door handle. Installation on an interior door can be done using hand-held devices. The next stage of installation is the insertion of the mechanism with the cylinder into the opening that was made earlier. The device is fixed using self-tapping screws.

Then you need to mark the perimeter of the locking plate. A construction knife is suitable for this job. Using a chisel, excess material is removed. The hole for the plate must exactly match its dimensions.

Note! If you plan not only to install a locking device, but also to install a door handle, you must read the instructions for replacing it.

After marking and selecting the lock plate, you should attach the locking device to the surface of the leaf and transfer the contours of the cylinder to the door. It is important to remember that this operation is performed both on the outside and on the inside of the door. Using a drill you need to make a hole for the secretion (larva). To freely position the mechanism inside the recess, it is recommended to make it slightly wider than the dimensions of the secret.

At the last stage, the mechanism is installed in a pre-prepared socket for it. The locking device is fixed using self-tapping screws. After installation, you need to check the correct operation of the device. Finally, you can decorate the surface of the door at the place where the lock is installed with special linings, which are secured with self-tapping screws.

How to embed a lock into an interior door: installing the counter part

In order for the door to be locked, it is necessary to install a strike plate on the door frame with a hole for the lock tongue. Installation of this element is quite simple.

The price of inserting a lock into an interior door depends on the type of mechanism. In any case, self-installation allows you to save money. The first step is to mark the area in which the striker will be located. This area must correspond to the latch parameters of the locking device. To do this, you need to close the door leaf and draw two lines on the lid, indicating the boundaries of the latch. It is also recommended to measure the distance between the upper edge of the latch and the corner of the door leaf. The obtained parameters should be transferred to the doorway.

Before starting work, you should check the accuracy of the installation of a door handle with a latch or other type of locking mechanism. The device must be level. Otherwise, there may be problems with opening and closing the door leaf.

Helpful information! As an alternative to mechanisms that have a standard latch, you can purchase a magnetic lock. It is characterized by operational reliability and noiselessness. Installing a magnetic lock on an interior door has its own characteristics, but if you follow the instructions, it can be done by a beginner.

After marking the area corresponding to the latch, you need to attach the striker to the door frame. There is one important rule that will help to carry out proper installation of the response element. If the part will be recessed in the material of the boat, then in this case you need to outline its outline both on the inside and on the outside. In turn, if the striker will be located directly on the surface, then you should limit yourself to marking the internal contour.

After marking the striker plate, you need to make holes for the tongue and fasteners (screws). After this, you can begin installing the strike plate. At the end of the work, you need to close the door and check the size of the gap. If necessary, excess play can be eliminated very simply. All you need to do is bend the lock tongue on the strike plate.

How to disassemble the door handle of a round type interior door

The method of dismantling round door handles for interior doors may differ depending on the design features of the fittings. The most convenient are products that have two tightening screws. In this case, it is easiest to dismantle it yourself. To do this, you need to unscrew the fixing elements and remove the mechanism.

However, there are situations that require great effort. Mechanisms that are more complex from a constructive point of view are dismantled in several stages. On modern interior doors, round parts equipped with a button and various decorative elements are quite often found. The function of such covers is to hide the mounting screws. How to remove the handle from the interior door in this case?

In order to dismantle the handle with the button and decorative overlays, it is first necessary to remove the outer part of the mechanism, which is attached using a special button. Next, you need to eliminate the linings that hide the retaining elements.

Note! It is important to know that the buttons that help secure the outer part of the mechanism can also have a different design.

If the handle is damaged, it can be repaired. How to repair an interior door handle? First of all, you need to find out the nature of the damage. Based on this information, the necessary instructions are selected and the mechanism is rehabilitated. It is recommended that before dismantling the old handle, you determine its type and study the design features. To eliminate the round handle mechanism, experts advise reading the more detailed instructions.

How to disassemble the handle of a push-type interior door

Lever handles for interior paintings are a more common option for fittings. They are found everywhere and are easy to install and operate. The design of pressure products includes two main elements (external and internal), which are attached to the central rod.

The operating principle of the push handles is based on a simple mechanism. Such fittings have a latch, which is located in the recess of the strike plate when the door is closed. In order to open the door leaf, you need to press the lever on either side of the door. Dismantling such mechanisms also includes several stages, as in the case of round analogues. How to disassemble the door handle of a push-type interior door?

In order to remove such a piece of hardware, you must follow the instructions. Such work can be done by any person who does not have special knowledge. First of all, you need to unscrew the screws, the function of which is to fix the decorative trim. This will allow access to the axial element. In such fittings it has four sides. On the Internet you can find a lot of materials that can answer the question of how to remove the handle from an interior door. Video and photographic materials allow for quick and competent dismantling of this element of fittings.

The next step is to remove the remaining part of the handle. After this, you can begin to dismantle the lining on the other side of the door leaf. The second fragment must be removed in the same way as the first. In this way, the push handle used in interior doors is dismantled.

How to remove the door handle of an interior door (round with a button): detailed instructions

To dismantle such a round door handle, you first need to find the button. It is located on the inside. In some cases the button is below the level of the hole. It is worth noting that access to this element sometimes requires twisting the fittings. How to remove the round door handle of an interior door? The main thing you need to do at the initial stage is to gain access to the button. After this, you should press it with any suitable object, for example, a screwdriver. Then you can proceed directly to removing the door handle mechanism.

Note! In some cases, it takes a lot of force to press the button.

Then the decorative element should be dismantled. Any metal element that has a small thickness, for example, a knife or a construction ruler, is suitable for this task. Using such an object you need to pry the cover and remove it. It is worth noting that some decorative elements have a special recess, which is used for quick removal.

In order to answer the question of how to disassemble the round handle of an interior door, it is recommended to study video materials on this topic. After removing the cover, access to the locking elements opens. They need to be unscrewed. This is how the round handle with the button is dismantled.

How to install a handle on an interior door: push model

First of all, before installing the push handle on the interior door, you need to determine the size of the internal hole. To do this, you will need to lean the locking mechanism against the end surface of the blade. It is very important that the decorative strip and the side surface of the door are in the same plane. Next, you need to transfer the outline of the product to the surface using a pencil. After this, all that remains is to connect the lines at the end using a construction corner.

When installing a handle on an interior door with your own hands, do not forget that the hole is made with a special drill called a chisel drill. The recess is made using a chisel and a regular hammer. In turn, the area in which the front cover will be located is organized by using a chisel.

In order to answer the question of how to install a handle on an interior door, you need to carefully watch video materials on this topic. It is important to understand that installation features depend on the door material, as well as the type of handle and set of tools.

At the next stage of installation of the pressure product, the zone is marked in which a square will be installed for the door handles and the locking mechanism well. Next, you need to use a drill and make holes for the retaining elements. Recesses are arranged on both sides of the canvas.

After making the holes, you need to clean them of sawdust and dust. Then the locking device is installed in the canvas. The mechanism is fixed using a lining and self-tapping screws. Next, handles are installed on the squares, and self-tapping screws are used to secure them.

After this, for an interior door with a latch, you need to mount a decorative ring. There are special flange holes for this purpose.

The final stage of installation, as in previous cases, involves installing the striker plate on the door frame. It is worth remembering that it is installed only after making a hole for the tongue and screws.

Installing a handle on an interior door: features of installing round devices

The technology for installing round door handles (knobs) differs from the process of installing push products. This is due to the design features of such fittings. The handle can be installed either on a removed or on a hung panel. The second option is more acceptable, as it simplifies the marking of the strike plate on the door frame.

Note! Most often, installing handles is necessary if the old mechanism fails. It is worth noting that some problems are quite easy to fix yourself. The method of repairing an interior door handle depends on the nature of the damage. If the device cannot be restored, it is replaced.

The height of the round handle is selected depending on the individual preferences of the owners. The standard distance from the floor to the device is 90-110 cm. It is also important to remember that the installation of a new mechanism must be done as carefully as possible if the panel is of the frame type. This is due to the fact that it is quite easy to damage.

How to put a handle on an interior door? To install a door handle of this type, you must first make the markings correctly. After this you need to arrange two holes. The first is drilled at the end (for the latch), and the second is drilled on the blade (for the rotary handle). The organization of holes on the canvas for the handle is carried out in several stages. The first step is to make a through hole. For this purpose, a special attachment is used - a crown. In turn, for subsequent installation of the latch, a feather-type drill is used.

After organizing all the necessary holes, you can begin installing the handle on the interior door. However, first you need to fix the latch using self-tapping screws. To attach a round product, you need to disassemble its upper part and remove the decorative ring.

Both parts of the handle have special holes for screws. These elements are applied to the outside and inside of the door and fixed to each other. Next, you need to install the decorative ring, after which you need to press the handle until a characteristic click appears, which signals the completion of installation.

Thus, installing a handle on the interior canvas is not a very difficult undertaking. You need to remember that the installation process is influenced by factors such as door material, type of lock, and type of handles. If necessary, you can always use the services of a qualified specialist who will carry out the installation competently and in the shortest possible time.

After an apartment is renovated, new doors are often installed. However, canvases are often delivered without handles and locks. In this case, you can install the fittings yourself. In addition, the apartment owner has the opportunity to choose the lock that will be most suitable and convenient.

Interior door design.

Well-chosen handles will complement the interior well and complete the appearance of the interior door. In some cases, it is impossible to select a blade with ready-made fittings, and a separate installation of a lock becomes the only option.

Why are locks needed on interior doors?

Many people are perplexed as to why lock the door to a room. However, there are situations when this is simply necessary.

Lock diagram for an interior door.

  1. If there is a small child in the apartment, he may accidentally damage, break or break valuables, expensive electronics or documents. A locked door will become an insurmountable obstacle for the “destroyer.”
  2. The need to close the door may arise if you have pets, which are not always neat.
  3. If the room is used as a study, then a door lock will prevent accidental visits from uninvited guests. Nobody stops a person from concentrating on work.
  4. A locked door will provide privacy in a crowded apartment. In this case, no one is allowed to mind their own business.
  5. Locks and latches are important at the entrance to hygiene rooms: bathroom and toilet. Then the possibility of a sudden invasion will be excluded.
  6. When using interior doors in offices, locks will prevent the loss of valuable property and important papers.

Required materials and tools

In order not to be distracted from work, you need to prepare everything you need in advance:

Tools for installing a lock for interior doors.

  1. Lock on an interior door.
  2. Pencil for marking. It is advisable to use a furniture one, as it is designed for working with wood.
  3. Drill.
  4. Drill. The diameter must be selected depending on the size of the lock.
  5. Feather drill.
  6. Core drills.
  7. Roulette.
  8. Square.
  9. Screwdriver. Splined or Phillips can be used depending on the type of screws.
  10. Chisel. It must correspond to the size of the planned recesses; different widths and shapes may be needed: flat and semicircular.
  11. Hammer or mallet.
  12. Self-tapping screws (usually supplied with the lock).
  13. File with coarse and fine notches.

When everything is ready, you can start working.

Choosing a location for the castle

First of all, you need to look at what material the door is made of. If it is a solid piece of wood, then you can install the lock in any convenient place. Recommended height 90-100 cm from the floor. But someone may find it comfortable at 80 cm or 110 cm. To determine the optimal location, you can simulate the opening of a door. It is advisable to ask family members about this. The optimal height should be marked on the door.

Replacing the door handle.

If a different material is used, then you need to determine where the additional beam is located, since the fittings will be embedded into it. For doors made of MDF it is located at a height of 1 m from the floor.

Before buying a lock, you need to measure the thickness of the door.

If the lock does not fit in size, it will be impossible to install it. The minimum thickness of a door for a lock is 4 cm.

It is necessary to check whether the box can withstand the load and whether there is any damage on it in the place where the lock is supposed to be installed.

Marking the door and preparing the hole for the key

Installing a lock on interior doors begins with markings. The canvas is removed from the hinges and laid on its side. The place where the latch is inserted is marked on the end part. A lock is applied to the sides and outlined along the contour. A special mark is made where the key will be inserted: here you will have to drill through the door. The height of the lock and fastening strip is marked on the end side.

To make an even round notch in the canvas, you will need a drill with a crown. The diameter of the drill must be selected depending on the locking mechanism: it must fit freely in the recess. But you also need to take into account the size of the decorative overlays: the hole must be completely hidden by them. The amount of space should allow for the possibility of attaching the fittings to the door using the self-tapping screws included in the kit.

Using the previously made markings, we drill a hole for the bar connecting the handles. This must be done on both sides so as not to damage the blade when the crown comes out from the back side.

Drilling holes for the locking mechanism

Marking diagram for installing a lock on an interior door.

First, the place for the locking mechanism is prepared. To do this, use a feather drill to make a hole with a diameter slightly larger than it. As a result, the entire lock should fit in there easily, fit freely, but at the same time not dangle. In order not to make a mistake with the depth, you need to measure the length of the locking mechanism on the drill and make a mark.

Insulating tape is suitable for these purposes: it is wound in several layers in the right place. When the drill sinks into the door, the tape will rest against the edges and prevent the hole from being made deeper than necessary.

Depending on the size of the locking mechanism, you may need to drill 2, 3, or more of these holes. When they are all ready, they need to be connected. Using a chisel, you need to remove the partitions between the recesses. You can use a file. Then you need to align the recess for the lock. A file with a large notch is suitable for these purposes. The final processing is carried out with a tool with a finer notch. After carrying out the work, you need to clean the recess from sawdust.

Preparing the site for the plank, final stage and check

When the hole is ready, the lock face plate is applied to it so that the holes for the lock on the door and on the bar coincide. Its outer contour is outlined. Using a hammer and chisel, a recess is made equal to the thickness of the overlay. The bar will be inserted here. It should not stick out from the door leaf. If necessary, you need to deepen the recess, otherwise the door will not close.

Now the locking mechanism is being checked. It should be inserted without distortion, fit freely in the recess, and the strip should overlap without interference and not stick out from the door.

A lock mechanism with a tongue is installed in the prepared holes. The plank is fixed using two self-tapping screws. According to the attached diagram, the entire lock on the interior door is assembled, handles and all decorative elements are attached. The mechanism is ready.

There is one detail left. In order for the door to close, there must be a recess on the jamb for the lock tongue. First you need to determine its location. To do this, mark the place where the latch touches the jamb, its lower and upper boundaries. A recess is made in the center where the tongue will fit. The notch should be longer than the latch by 2-3 mm. Then a fixing strip is applied and outlined along the contour. Using a chisel, a notch is made to the thickness of the lining. If there is a plastic pocket, install it first. A decorative overlay is attached on top using self-tapping screws. If the bar sticks out and prevents the door from closing, the recess needs to be deepened a little.

Scheme of an interior door with a lock.

The most crucial moment. To check how the locking mechanism works, you need to watch it in action. Tests must be carried out with the door open. To do this, first simply move the handle, making sure that the tongue moves easily: it should not jam. Then check the closing and opening with the key. These actions must be carried out freely. Only if these manipulations did not cause any difficulties, you can try to close and open the door.

If any problems arise during the inspection, it is necessary to disassemble the lock, find out the cause of the problem and fix it.

What to do if something goes wrong

Main problems:

  • tongue jamming;
  • tight turn of the handles;
  • key jamming.
  • the tongue will jam if the lock mechanism is installed too tightly or skewed;
  • the free movement of the latch may be hampered by chips remaining in the recess;
  • due to the skew of the lock, the handles may be difficult to turn, and the key may not close;
  • due to improper assembly of the handle mechanism, the tongue will not move;
  • the key will not close the door if the lock itself is incorrectly assembled or tightened with excessive or insufficient force.

Depending on the identified malfunction, you can:

  • disassemble the lock and expand the recess;
  • clean the recess from shavings and sawdust;
  • install the lock so as to eliminate the distortion;
  • reassemble the handles following the instructions;
  • reassemble the lock mechanism.

It's quite easy to embed a lock into a door with your own hands. You don't have to be a cabinet maker to do this. If you know how to hold a hammer and a chisel, you will not have any significant difficulties with how to install a lock on an interior door. The general scheme is always the same; details may differ depending on the type of mechanism used.

Requires a minimum set of tools:

  • Drill
  • Chisel 19 mm
  • Crown diameter 50 mm
  • Spade drill 23mm wide
  • Drill bit for wood or metal 4 mm
  • Hammer
  • crosshead screwdriver
  • And a pencil

So, let's start cutting into the lock.

Drill a hole in the center with a 4mm drill bit.

We place the lock flush with the door and make a mark according to the fact

We drill through the hole with the same drill, maintaining a right angle.

Using a 50 mm crown we make a cut on one side of the door.

Attention!

Your specific case may require a different size crown.

Let's finish on the other side.

We take a self-tapping screw of a suitable length, close the door along the door frame and through the 50 mm hole, insert the self-tapping screw into the remaining 4 mm hole and, using pressure, make a mark in the door frame.

Using a 23mm feather drill, we cut a hole at the mark to a depth sufficient for the lock latch to engage.

Using the same drill, we drill a hole for the lock along the mark.

We insert the lock and make a mark with a sharp pencil to recess it into the door leaf.

Using a chisel, we make notches strictly according to the marks and make a selection so that the lock sits in the pocket, then we fasten it with self-tapping screws.

We begin to assemble the lock, insert the outer part into the grooves (as a rule, it does not require disassembly).

Then carefully remove the decorative “cup” sitting in the grooves, then press the latch and remove the handle.

We connect the two sides with screws.

We insert the handle so that the latch operates.

Snap the decorative “cup” into place.

We attach the striker, make a mark, use a chisel to remove the excess and screw it on.

Done!))) A correctly embedded lock closes freely by pressing the door leaf until it slams.

Instructions for installing a door lock (knob)

1.Marking the door

Apply markings on the door leaf to install the knob (lock) according to the template. Recommended distance from the floor is 965 mm.

2.Marking holes

After you have made the markings, drill two holes: 50 mm in diameter for the knob (lock) handle and 23 mm in diameter for the latch mechanism.

H. Installing the strike plate

Install the strike plate at the same height as the latch so that the additional tongue of the latch remains recessed into the body of the latch when closing, which is an obstacle when pressing.

4 Disassembling the knob (lock)

To disassemble the knob (lock), use a special key to press the spring-loaded latch at the place where the handle is attached and remove it.

5. Latch length adjustment

6. Installing the latch

Install the latch into the groove of the door (make sure that the bevel of the latch is directed towards closing the door). Install the cover plate with the rod so that the rod and coupling sleeves fit exactly into the grooves on the latch body.

7. Installing the knob trim(castle)

First, slide the inner jujube cover plate onto the rod and secure it with screws (or screws). Then screw on the outer part of the trim.

8. Handle installation

Install the handle so that the groove on the rod coincides with the groove on the knob handle, press the handle until it “clicks.”

9. Rearranging the mechanism in the halyard handle

For models of latches with a halyard handle (versions 01 and 03), installation is also provided for both left and right doors. To do this, it is necessary to remove the cylinder mechanism and the fixing mechanism from the handle body and swap them (according to the figure), in accordance with the side of the door opening.

Installation procedure.

1. Determine the installation location of the knob and apply markings, following the template and installation instructions.

2. Using the installed latch body, mark the installation location of the strike plate on the door jamb and select a groove for the strike plate.

3.Install the strike plate and secure it with screws.

4. Alternately check the operation of the knob from outside and inside the room.

5. For models of latches with a halyard handle (versions 01.03), installation on left and right doors is also provided. To do this, it is necessary to swap the locking mechanism and the cylinder mechanism from the handle body.

As you can see, fitting a lock into a door is not such a difficult task, the main thing is not to rush.

The question of how to embed a lock into a wooden door yourself often arises before those who decide all repair issues themselves. In other life situations, such skills and knowledge can also be useful, especially since there is nothing complicated about it.

First, you need to figure out which doors you need to install a lock on and, in accordance with their type, choose a suitable locking device.

Wooden doors are intended for:

  • input
  • interior

By appearance and type of operation:

Have you decided on the type of door? Let's start choosing the optimal lock.

Lock selection

There are three types of locks:

A rim lock on a wooden door leaf does not look aesthetically pleasing.

You cannot find a better mortise-type locking device for both interior and entrance doors. Installing such a lock will require some knowledge and skill, but, if desired, anyone can do it. When purchasing, you should take into account the direction of opening the door and, accordingly, choose a “right or left” lock. There are also universal models suitable for any occasion.

For an interior door, it is better to choose a lock without a keyhole with a magnetic or halyard latch, when turning the handle activates the mechanism.

For sliding types of doors, there are models of locks on sale with a special hook that secures the doors in the closed state.

For entrance doors, locks with bolts are chosen; this is the most reliable type against burglary.

Tools

The first step in preparing for work is selecting the tools that will be needed to install a mortise lock. You will need:

  • pencil or pen for marking
  • electric drill
  • a feather drill, the width of which corresponds to the thickness of the lock
  • set of wood drills from 2 to 7 mm
  • narrow and wide chisel
  • screwdriver
  • screwdriver
  • hammer or chisel
  • tape measure, square or ruler

Making a groove for a lock

  1. Determine the location of the lock on the door. As a rule, the lock is embedded 1 meter from the floor - plus/minus 10 cm depending on the height of those who will mainly use it.
  2. Apply the lock to the door leaf with the side that you will cut in, and trace it with a pen or pencil.
  3. Drill a hole equal to the width of the lock using a feather drill. You can do this in two ways:
  • do not drill a hole to the full depth at once, but move gradually 1-2 cm to the required mark in the door leaf
  • Drill to the full depth at once, having previously made marks on the drill equal to the width of the lock being embedded. To do this, you can use electrical tape or a piece of wire.

It should be noted that it is necessary to drill 1-3 mm larger than the size of the lock body, since it must fit into the drilled groove without obstacles, and the front plate must be placed completely in it.

During drilling, the drill must be held level, perpendicular to the blade, so that there is no displacement of the groove being drilled.

  1. Process the groove using a chisel and hammer. Its walls should be as smooth as possible so that the lock fits neatly inside the door leaf.
  2. Make markings for the front lock bar if you are sure that it fits into the groove without any hindrance. To do this, insert the lock into it and trace the outline of the bar with a pencil. Using a chisel, use a chisel to knock out a notch according to the markings.

Installing a lock and handle

Is the groove ready? Proceed to installing the locking device.

  1. Make markings for the cylinder and door handle. You need to pay close attention to this and be careful, otherwise you can ruin everything. Place the lock opposite the groove and, using measuring instruments (ruler, square), accurately mark the future location of the keyhole and door handle.
  2. Using suitable drills, make the necessary holes for the handle and cylinder.
  3. Insert the lock into the hole and, if everything fits, screw it to the door leaf with the screws that should come with the lock. If it doesn’t fit, then continue to align the groove with a chisel and file, not forgetting to constantly double-check how the lock fits into it.

Lock assembly and adjustment

Now you need to adjust the operation of the lock and drill holes for the bolts and latch.

  1. Insert the cylinder into the lock and secure it with the supplied bolt. Check how it works. If everything is fine, secure the handle and faceplate.
  2. Lubricate the bolts and latch with dye, close the door and turn the key so that obvious marks remain on the jamb.
  3. Cut the wood to the required depth of the bolts and latches. Use a chisel to trim the edges to exact dimensions.
  4. Prepare the recess for the striker (also use measuring tools during this work) so that it is flush with the surface of the box. Screw it on using the screws supplied with the lock.

Everything is ready - you have managed to install a mortise lock on a wooden door. Use the handle and key to make sure everything is level and the lock is comfortable to use. Using a chisel, correct the location of the lock parts if you made a mistake somewhere.
