Unique decorations for the kitchen: decorating plates with your own hands. Plates on the walls - a creative approach to decorating How to decorate a disposable plate with your own hands

It is difficult to say at what time the first decorative plate appeared, decorating the wall of the dwelling. If we can safely say about the first porcelain plate that it appeared in the 7th century, in China, then little is known about dishes as wall decor. There is an assumption that the tradition of using plates as decoration appeared at the time of rewarding subjects especially devoted to the sovereign with rare and expensive copies of painted plates. It is not surprising that the honorable piece of porcelain was given the best place in the home of subjects. But at the end of the 19th century, it was the collection of plates that came into fashion - rare, old, original. But the most popular were products in white and blue tones.

In the middle of the 20th century, a notorious company produced a collection of plates designed exclusively for decoration. The precedent set was an impetus for other manufacturers. To this day, many designers and homeowners prefer using paintings or photographs within original plates as wall decor. Collectible items, souvenirs brought from travels or plates specially bought for decorating walls can turn the idea of how to decorate a room in a creative and original way.

Whether you want to create a composition from the plates you already have or purchase copies specifically for wall decor, it is better to familiarize yourself with the design projects of famous masters and the successful attempts of homeowners to decorate their homes on their own. Original and classic, simple and intricate, with a pattern and plain, round and fanciful shape - there are many options for the execution of plates, and even more use of this version of dishes for decorating walls. We hope that our original selection of photos will be useful to you and inspire you to your own exploits in decorating your home.

Decorative plates on the wall of the dining room - the most popular option

It is difficult to think of a better place to decorate the walls with beautiful plates than the dining room. In the dining room, plates on the wall will look organic and appropriate. If you are still taking the first steps in decorating the walls with plates, then start with the dining room - the most advantageous option. Simple recommendations will help you decorate the walls of the dining room in the most organic way:

  • if obi with a pattern is used in the decoration of the room, then it is better to use plain plates of the original form:
  • light decorative plates will look spectacular on a dark background, and for a plain pastel decoration solution, you can use a colorful decor with a bright painting;
  • the smaller the pattern on the plates, the closer they should be to us (do not hang the painted plates high).

Against the dark background of the dining room, light wall decor looks especially impressive, expressive. Large snow-white flowers brought a touch of romanticism to the austere interior of the black and white dining room.

Here is another option for arranging plates of different sizes and colors against a dark dining room background. Plain and colored, smooth and carved - assorted plates made up the original composition.

For a dining room covered with wallpaper with a print, a set of plain plates, presented in one color scheme, perfectly suited. Different shades of green brought spring freshness to the interior of the dining room in pastel colors.

Light, plain plates effectively support the neutral image of the dining room. Pastel colors and an abundance of sunlight have become key elements in creating the interior.

An unusual option for decorating the walls of the dining room is drawing up a picture-panel from plates of different sizes and colors. For authenticity with the picture, the designers did not even spare some of the plates and cut them along the contour of an imaginary wall decor rectangle.

At present, it is not difficult to compose a composition of plates, on which portraits of your family, memorable events and faces are applied using photo printing. If you are not ready for the exhibition of your own photos, start with black and white images on small plates.

A large wall decor of an unusual shape and color, which can hardly be called plates, can become an accent element of the interior. In an almost white dining room, bright, colorful decor items look like the “stars” of design.

Another example of how brightly painted dinner plates can bring a touch of positive mood and good mood to a bright, neutral room in terms of color schemes.

Not only to decorate, but also to bring a touch of enthusiasm and positive to the interior of the dining room, a composition of fish plates of different sizes, but made in the same color scheme, helped.

Bright glass wall plates look great on a cladding that imitates masonry. The grayish-beige tones of the interior are effectively diluted with colorful performance of unusual plates.

Wall decor for the kitchen space

Along with the placement of decorative plates on the walls of the dining room, a similar design technique is used for kitchen spaces. Of course, in the kitchen space there are much less free walls for decorating than in the dining room, but you can find an opportunity to hang your collection. Decorative plates "under Gzhel" - one of the most popular options for painting.

In a traditional kitchen with a snow-white design, white “lace” plates in the space of a kitchen apron look incredibly organic.

Plates on the walls of the living room - creative design

Many people think that it is possible to fit decorative plates into the living room interior only in certain styles. For example, traditional styles or shabby chic. But when choosing a wall decor, you can only be guided by color and texture combinations, your own preferences and get an incredibly attractive and original result when decorating a living room of any stylistic direction.

If your living room has a working or makeshift fireplace, then the space above it literally needs decorating. As a rule, this zone is quite extensive and will be able to fit very large pieces of wall decor or a whole composition of plates of different sizes and shapes. Artistic glass décor items look luxurious and bring originality to the traditional living room interior.

In the living room, plates can be hung over a chest of drawers or any other low storage system. Also organically similar wall decor will look in the space between the windows or on both sides of the doorway.

Bright glass plates of different sizes will bring a truly summer mood to the interior of the room. Placed on special tripods of different lengths, several colorful plates make up an original three-dimensional composition.

Decorative plates go well with other wall decor items - paintings, panels or framed photos. The main thing that must be observed when composing compositions from assorted wall decor is symmetry and unity of stylistic performance.

Decorating the living room in a marine style, we often use textiles in white and blue or blue stripes. In such an interior, decorative plates with Gzhel painting will organically look. Delicate patterns can soften the straightness of textile colors.

Even in a living room decorated in a modern, minimalist style, there is a place for decorative plates on the walls. The composition of plain plates of contrasting colors and different sizes looks like an accent, bringing color diversity to a rather strict interior of the living room.

Plates woven from threads and ropes, hollowed out from a single piece of wood, deep and not very deep, bright and wood-colored, plain and with a pattern - made up an unusual composition in the living room, decorated in white.

Decorate the bedroom with decorative plates

Agree that it is not often possible to meet plates as wall decor in a bedroom. The more interesting and original the interior can turn out. For example, a bedroom decorated in shabby chic or vintage style can be organically decorated with antique plates from your grandmother's collection or decorative items you bought at flea markets and antique stores.

An unusual way of placing carved-edged plates with ribbons on the wall can be a great decoration for a girl's bedroom. Ribbons matched to the color of the interior will be a great addition to plain decorative plates.

In addition to a solo presence on the walls of the bedroom, decorative plates can also act in company with other wall decor. Framing a mirror in a luxurious snow-white frame with plates of positive mint color has become an accent piece of furniture in the bedroom.

In a bedroom decorated in a classic style, a few small plates above the headboard will look more than appropriate. This wall decor brings a touch of home warmth and comfort to the bedroom interior.

Plates in ethnic style, painted on ceramics or woven from multi-colored ropes, are an excellent decoration for the original design of a bedroom.

Decorative plates in the bathroom? Why not!

Not everyone can imagine decorative plates decorating the walls of a bathroom or bathroom. But surprisingly, this decor looks very organic in utilitarian rooms. A composition of plates of different shapes and sizes, plain and with drawings, plot and abstract, has become a decoration of the bathroom, made in light colors.

Original plates-flowers in a monophonic design can decorate any room. The design decision to decorate the bathroom walls with them turned out to be more than successful.

As if outlandish green plants appeared in the pastel-colored bathroom, bringing freshness and mischief of spring mood to the design of the utilitarian room.

For rare, vintage or simply expensive decorative plates, it is better to use special holders when attaching to the wall. This is the most secure mounting method. Plates made in the same style will look harmonious on a tripod.

Hallways, corridors and halls with plates on the walls

Huge beautiful flowers with a natural color have become a real find for decorating the hallway. Expressive, voluminous, contrasting and original - after a few seconds in such a room it is already difficult to imagine this space without such wall decor.

Above a chest of drawers or a bookcase located in the corridor or hallway, you can place a composition of plates of different shapes, colors and sizes. On a plain wall decoration, such a decor will look especially impressive.

For a long time, an interesting hobby “hand-made” has come into fashion - things made by oneself, some people have become interested in sewing clothes, others in creating crafts from plastic or designer dolls, and some of us have discovered decoupage of plates. This is a fairly fresh hobby, which has gained its popularity due to the availability of tools and the cheapness of improvised materials for work. Literally everything is used here - from napkins to eggshells, but the result is striking in originality and beauty, photos of such works inspire more and more people, and the number of devoted followers is constantly growing in the hobby. Today, many sites are being created with photo and video materials, which describe in detail how to do this simple work step by step with your own hands.

Natasha Fokhtina, the author and host of her own program about handicrafts on one of the television channels, was recognized as one of the "gurus" of the "hand-made" direction. Today we will look at several ways to make such a plate, your own unique interior decoration, based on the methods and techniques of her video tutorials.

What is decoupage of plates?

This is a technique for decorating dishes by gluing a part of a picture with a final varnish coating to it so that it is securely fixed, and literally “decoupage” is translated from French as “cut out”. The founders of the direction were German artisans of the late 15th century, who began to decorate ordinary furniture with similar pictures. In the 17th century, Europe was overwhelmed by a wave of enthusiasm for Chinese and Japanese motifs, in connection with which all segments of the population were already carried away by decoupage with their own hands, so by the 19th century it had become widespread; but this hobby came to Russia only at the beginning of this century, and gained real popularity only in our days.

The easiest for beginners will be decoupage of plates, later in the same style you can learn how to decorate furniture, bags and more. Themes can be different: New Year's landscape, flowers, still lifes, even fragments of classical paintings. Or, why not, an old photo of your beloved grandmother. The main thing is that you will make this miracle with your own hands.

What will you need

  • plate;
  • napkins - these can be special napkins for decoupage, or the most common options with any pattern;
  • picture or photo of your choice;
  • glue - acrylic or PVA;
  • scissors;
  • alcohol;
  • craquelure;
  • eggshell;
  • brushes;
  • primer;
  • acrylic paints of any two colors;
  • oil gold or other paint.

Not the whole list is needed to work. Everyone will need tools, but from napkins, photographs, craquelure or eggshells, you can choose one thing.

Decoupage of plates is divided into types:

  1. With napkins. If special napkins are used, designed specifically for decoupage, then they are stratified, separating the upper part, if ordinary analogues are used, they are not separated into layers, but glued as is. The performance technique can be found in the photo and video lessons of Fokhtina at the end of the article.
  2. With craquelure. The plate is painted with a paint of a special composition, which, when dried, cracks in texture.
  3. Eggshell. Shards of eggshell are glued to a drawing, photograph or a place around them as a frame.
  4. Photo framing. The style and technique is the same as when using napkins, just a printed photograph is taken as an image.

In addition to this method, decoupage of plates is divided into:

  • direct - an image or photo is superimposed on the front of the dish;
  • reverse decoupage of the plate - the pattern is applied to the reverse side. As a rule, it is used on transparent saucers.

What is the best plate to choose:

Among the abundance of all kinds of plates, you can choose any to your taste, but not all dishes are suitable for decoupage. Many saucers come in corrugated or pimply texture, and some of them even have their own pattern, similar in style to the one we want to make ourselves. In addition, all plates differ in the material of manufacture - it can be ceramics, and glass, and porcelain, and so on. For work, we need the simplest white porcelain plate, smooth and without any images.

Direct decoupage technique with drawing:

  1. A pattern is cut out of a napkin with scissors. If a photograph is used, then by analogy, its necessary part is taken. It can be any topic, on the eve of the New Year, New Year's stories were especially popular, but this holiday is still quite a long time. And it is also a great gift for March 8, and, of course, for the birthdays of loved ones.
  2. The plate itself needs to be degreased, for this a cotton pad is moistened with alcohol and all surfaces are wiped - front and back.
  3. After degreasing, the dishes are carefully wiped dry, otherwise, in the process of applying the image, wrinkles or bubbles may appear on it.
  4. A drawing, photo or cut-out fragments are neatly placed on the front of the plate.
    1. Correctly placed parts are covered with glue, smoothing out all the fragments with a brush.
    2. After the glue dries, the entire surface of the plate with the image is varnished.
    3. We are waiting for the varnish to dry - and the plate is ready.

    This method is used to create decorative plates. If you plan not only to admire them, but also serve fruits and goodies for tea in them, then it is better to use reverse decoupage.

    Do-it-yourself reverse decoupage technique:

    1. The pattern cutting and degreasing manipulations are identical to the direct method.
    2. The difference lies in the fact that the drawing is attached to the back of the dish, and the plate itself must be transparent, otherwise the work will not be visible and will completely lose its meaning.
    3. There is also a difference in the technique of applying glue. They do not smear the entire pattern, but only the edges, and it is better not to go on the front surface of the plate, but small flaws are allowed, most importantly, do not smear the glue much. On the photo and video materials of our site you can clearly see the style and technique of work.
    4. After the glue is completely dry, all the "blunders" can be carefully cleaned.
    5. If an opaque background is planned around the picture, then this surface is painted with acrylic paints and allowed to dry.

Even in Ancient Greece, plates were divided into table and decorative ones, in China already in the 7th century they learned how to produce porcelain dishes, but in Europe the secret of the finest Chinese porcelain was unraveled only in the Middle Ages. But how did the tradition of hanging decorative plates on the wall come about? Its origin is associated with another tradition - to reward citizens with exquisite porcelain dishes for special services to the state. Most likely, it was also influenced by the one that arose at the end of the 19th century. collectible fashion. And so, in the 60s. last century, the factory of the French jeweler Rene Lalique released the first collection of plates designed exclusively for home decor.

Today, the "plate" decor does not lose its relevance and keeps up with the times. For example, you do not have to buy special decorative or collectible plates at all - you can now compose a composition from the saucers you already have. In addition, wall plates can organically fit even into a modern, and not just a classic interior, as it used to be.

Let's get to know this type of decor closer and find out:

  • how to correctly compose a wall composition in terms of color, shape, size and pattern of dishes;
  • how and where it can be placed;
  • how to hang plates on the wall with your own hands using purchased or improvised means, including without drilling the wall.

We compose a composition

In composing a collage of different plates, perhaps the main thing is that something unites them. It can be a sustained color scheme, pattern, theme and / or shape of dishes. And it is also very important that the whole composition fits organically into the interior of the kitchen and at the same time does not clutter it up. Let's study successful examples of such decor.

The color scheme of the interior, walls and panels

  • On a plain background, you can hang plates of any color - from bright and colorful to contrasting or strict;

  • Keep in mind that the brighter or darker the wall, the brighter the saucers should be so as not to get lost in the background;

  • The color scheme of the wall composition can and should support the color scheme of the kitchen interior (furniture, curtains, finishes, etc.);

  • Black and white tableware, such as those from the iconic Piero Fornasetti collection, will look great on a black or white background;

  • You can create a game of color plates and a colored wall;

  • In the interior in light, pastel colors, plates of the same unobtrusive shades will look good;

  • If the wall in the kitchen is decorated with wallpaper with a pattern, then try to choose such plates that would harmoniously combine not only with the color, but also with the pattern of the wallpaper;

Matching plates together

When composing a collage of dishes, you can make a combination of saucers of different sizes with drawings of different themes, but in the same color scheme. At the same time, plates can be both plain and with a border, painting, print.

Most often, the "plate" panel combines not only color, but also the theme. For example, these can be souvenir plates brought from travels, or a plant theme, as in the photo below.

The most original idea is to hang a panel of plates assembled according to the mosaic principle. The following photo shows the collection of ceramics designer Molly Hatch.

However, it is not necessary to buy a ready-made panel, because you can make a “mosaic” of saucers painted with acrylics with your own hands.

Themes of decorative plates and interior styles

  • Suitable for traditional saucers with floral motifs, painted in the style of Gzhel ceramics, Chinese and Delft porcelain, with gilding, etc.

  • requires floral decoration and pastel shades;

  • The interior of the kitchen in a modern style will become more interesting due to the combination of a variety of bright and colorful plates, united by shape, color or patterns;

  • In ethnic styles, copper trays, plates with folk painting and textiles are appropriate, as in the photo below;

  • In country style, you can use original wicker plates, white ceramic dishes of various shapes and simply traditional floral motifs.

Nine popular shapes for cymbal arrangements

Having decided on the composition of your wall composition, you need to decide on the arrangement of the plates relative to each other.

  1. One row (or more). With it, you can create an accent on one of the walls - for example, on the one that is near.

  1. Symmetrical composition. Ideal if the rest of the decor in the room is also symmetrical, or if you need to highlight a large object on the wall - say, a mirror.

  1. All over the wall. The composition should fill the empty section of the wall.

  1. Wave . Such a group in the form of a curved line will look amazing on an empty wide wall.

  1. Arch. This form will allow you to elegantly decorate the area around a large interior item - the same mirror or even a window.

  1. Patterns. Fantasy figures are easy to make from saucers - for example, a snowman, an asterisk. However, keep in mind that in this case the mount is calibrated especially carefully so as not to go beyond the border of the figure.
  2. By size, i.e. from large to small or vice versa. Such compositions are placed horizontally or vertically - the main thing here will be exactly the size matching.

  1. around the door. Even if there are enough decorative accents in the spacious kitchen, the place near the doorway almost always remains free. It can be advantageously beaten by placing a symmetrical composition of decorative plates.

  1. Free Forms. A good solution for hosting a disparate collection or handmade works. In this case, you can not think about combinations of shapes, colors and sizes.

Methods for mounting plates on the wall

So, you have thought about what saucers the panel will consist of, played with the combinations, laying out the dishes on the floor, it remains only to realize your idea. How to fix the plates neatly and simply?

You can simply circle the plates on paper, cut out the resulting templates, fix them on the wall with pins (photo on the left) or tape, and only then start working.

You can also trace the outlines of the saucers on a large sheet of paper, transfer the paper to the wall, and then install it according to the mounting markings.

The mount, in turn, can be purchased and homemade:

  1. How to hang plates on the wall without using nails and without holes in the kitchen walls? Perhaps the only way to do this is with the Command Velcro. They hold the plates perfectly, peel off and re-stick easily. Such a mount is sold in Russia in many online stores, construction hypermarkets, etc. In the photo below you can see how they are attached to the wall and saucers.

  1. You can hang decorative plates using specially designed adhesive discs - Disc Plate Hangers. The discs come in different diameters and are selected according to the diameter and weight of the cookware. This type of attachment has 2 drawbacks - they are not so easy to buy, since they are not sold in Russia, but they can be easily ordered on Ebay and other online stores. The second drawback is that using them to hang plates on the wall without hammering nails into it will not work.
  2. If you don’t want to buy fasteners, then you can easily make it yourself with a regular safety pin, a loop of tape, a paper clip and cold welding like Poxipol. If desired, this place can then be decorated.

Do not forget that you can also use a ready-made mount for decorative plates:

  • Tabletop cymbal holder (left photo below):
  • Wall plate holder;

And here is a video on how to turn the most ordinary plate into a decorative one with your own hands by painting it with a stencil:

The decor for the walls of the kitchen and rooms can be completely diverse. We are used to hanging photographs, paintings, panels, embroideries and other decorative elements on the walls. But now we will talk about a more original version of decorating the room. Handmade decorative plates are a great addition to the interior of the kitchen. The composition of their such plates will be a truly original design move.

Choice of interior style

Decorative plates are most relevant in the cozy interior of the kitchen, but they will fit into other areas of your home, whether it be a bedroom, hallway, living room or even a nursery.

The main thing is to choose the right image on the decor. As for the interior styles of a kitchen or another room, the following options are best suited:

  1. Country.
  2. Shabby chic.
  3. Classic.
  4. Provence.
  5. Fusion.
  6. Scandinavian style.

Making a decorative plate for the kitchen with your own hands

Looking at a beautiful decorative plate, it is so hard to believe that anyone can create the same one with their own hands. In fact, the process is extremely simple. You can do it yourself and even involve your child in such interesting work. So, for work we need the following materials and tools:

  1. Shallow dish (white, made of ceramic).
  2. Bright acrylic paints.
  3. Tassels.
  4. Copy paper.
  5. Ready-made drawing (you can choose the appropriate option on the Internet and just print it).
  6. Pencil.
  7. Hot glue.
  8. Mounting device.

With the help of carbon paper and a pencil, we transfer the image from the prepared picture onto the ceramics. As you can see, even a person who cannot draw at all can create a masterpiece with his own hands. Now choose black, brown or gray paint and use a thin brush to trace the outlines of the transferred image. Let the lines dry completely.

When the contours dry, paint over the free parts with bright colors. Let the plate dry completely and attach it to the wall. That's all. Exquisite decoration for the interior is ready.

Mounting methods

When your product is completely ready, it remains only to decide how you will attach it to the wall. It is very convenient that there are a lot of mounting options, and you can choose the method that suits you.

  1. You can buy Velcro at a stationery or sewing store. One part of the Velcro must be glued with hot glue to the plate, and the second to the wall. So you can quickly remove the plate during cleaning.
  2. The second mounting option uses a paperclip. You need to make a hook from an ordinary paper clip and prepare a square of thick fabric. Attach the hook to the plate, pour it with hot glue and immediately apply the fabric. This hook is convenient to hang on a carnation.
  3. If you want to attach the product with a pin, you can also attach it to the ceramic with hot glue (you need to attach the head of the pin, and the opening part should look out).
  4. The next mounting option is very aesthetic. Take a piece of thick tape, thread it through a metal ring and fold it in half. Glue the edges of the tape with hot glue and stick it to the surface of the product.
  5. You can also make simple rings out of the tape and fix it on your product using cold welding.
  6. In addition, you can always buy a ready-made cymbal holder. It can be, for example, an exquisite forged holder or an almost invisible plastic holder. There are also holders for several plates at once, made in the form of a beautiful wooden shelf.

After the repair and arrangement of furniture is completed, there is always a need to add accessories to the wall in the interior. Most often, you want to close the void on the wall in the kitchen or living room. One way is to decorate in the form of decorative plates. They are able to add zest to any environment. Especially if the decoration of plates for walls or coasters is done by hand.

Large bright plates on the wall will perfectly complement the interior.

Acrylic varnish, brush.

If a photo or varnished picture is used, then they are placed in water for 10-15 minutes, after which the image layer is separated from the main part of the paper

A container of warm water, photos, magazine clippings.

Cutting out an image. It is better to prepare a round shape according to the size of a decorative plate. Or you can use individual elements of the composition.

Scissors, pictures.

Using PVA glue and a soft brush, the images are attached to the product. Bubbles and wrinkles are smoothed from the center.

Brushes, glue.

After drying, the dish is again covered with an acrylic fixative.

A ring is attached to the back surface of the product. It will help to hang the plate on the wall. It is better to fully connect with the entire cover on which it is placed.

Tin can, fast glue.

If necessary, you can draw some details of the picture with acrylic paints with a thin brush. So the result will look much brighter. This is done after the base layer has dried before varnishing. For mounting on the wall, in addition to the described method, you can use various hooks or loops.

In the interior, you can use plates of different sizes.

Plates of different colors will look very nice

quilling

Quilling is a technique based on twisting thin strips of paper. The method is relatively new and very exciting. So, to create a unique dish you will need:

  • a plate (it is better to use a product made of plastic or foam);
  • a set of paper for quilling (sold in stores for goods intended for creativity, you can buy a set of the most suitable colors);
  • tools for twisting paper ribbons (sometimes come with strips), they can be replaced with an awl;
  • toothpicks;
  • ruler;
  • simple pencil;
  • PVA glue;
  • image.

Making a product using the quilling technique includes several stages:

  1. It is required to divide the decorative plate into 4 equal parts, while marking its center. You also need to mark the location of the drawing with a pencil.
  2. Making curls from paper. With the help of ribbons, you can create whole compositions of flowers, birds, various patterns. Each element is smeared with glue using a toothpick and attached to the plate.

Do not be afraid to come up with new elements and compositions from paper ribbons. The main thing is to choose the right color scheme that will perfectly fit into the interior of the kitchen or dining room. Also, do not forget about the hooks for mounting the plate on the wall.

After that, it is allowed to outline the contours of the image with a pencil, or you can start working with paints without them if you want to improvise.

You can make such a collage from plates, and place a plate with a clock in the middle

Decorative plate with painting

First of all, a contour is applied to the plate and dried for several hours (the exact time for each type of paint is indicated on the package). Dry in a well ventilated area. It is recommended to apply it in two layers so that the line is convex. Then you can color the colored areas.

If there is a desire to add additional decorations, then it is recommended to do this when the paint begins to dry. Lay out the elements with tweezers and slightly press into the layer. All actions must be clear and accurate so as not to spoil the overall appearance of the product.
