How to update an old double bed with your own hands. How to make a headboard with your own hands. Bed headboard designs. DIY soft headboard “Carriage screed”

Accordingly, when choosing a bed, you need to take into account everything: its size, shape, location in the bedroom, color and style. Well, the rest of the interior details directly depend on the design of the bed.

Rarely does anyone put a bed in the middle of the bedroom. Most often, she stands either against a bare wall or with her back to the window. In the case of a window, in order to decorate the headboard, it is enough to choose beautiful textiles for the window, and the problem will be solved. But if the bed is placed with its back to the wall, then a wide field for flight of fancy opens up.

How to update and decorate your headboard

Today, beds without headboards of different heights have become widespread. And if we place such a bed close to the wall, we will soon get greasy wallpaper and an unkempt appearance of the wall itself. If you place the bed at some distance from the wall, then we can save the wallpaper, but the pillows risk moving out during sleep, which, in general, is also quite unpleasant.

There is a solution: build the head of the bed yourself, since the abundance of materials for decoration and finishing is great. There are also a large number of headboard decor options. The most important nuance in this case is the use of materials that can be washed, or, in extreme cases, provide for the possibility of removing the fabric and subsequent washing. Let's consider several options for updating and decorating the headboard with your own hands.

The most budget-friendly and simplest option is a pillow headboard and an imaginary headboard - painting the wall

Solution: We attach a decorative cornice or rod to the wall above the bed. We sew flat or fluffy pillows (to your taste) in the amount of 2-4 pieces. It is advisable to make removable pillowcases on them. We attach the pillows to the cornice using ties sewn to the pillowcase or loops. If desired, you can sew several replacement sets of pillowcases, for example, to match the bed linen or bedspread.

The next option is a panel headboard

Solution: buy a sheet of chipboard or plywood, cut it to the size of the bed or a little wider, and adjust the height as desired. You can first fix this sheet on the wall and then decorate it, or vice versa, whichever is more convenient for you.

The most common finishing option is “soft finishing”, first a sheet of foam rubber is glued on, then covered with material. It can be fabric, leather or leather substitute. Then you can make puffs by securing decorative buttons in pre-designated places.

You can leave the surface smooth or not glue foam rubber at all, it all depends on the quality of the chosen material and the design style. Such a panel can also be covered with parquet or decorative fittings. Very often lamps or shelves are attached to the panels.

A very unusual and original design option for a headboard in the form of a screen

The solution: assemble a wooden screen frame with three or more sections, which is then covered with fabric. The middle sections should be equal in width to the width of the bed, the side sections can be slightly wider than the middle ones. In this case, the screen will really become a screen - it will protect those sleeping on the bed from the bright sun. This screen can be mounted on the wall, or you can simply place it behind the bed and leave it mobile.

The headboard of the bed can also be decorated with fabric drapery that covers the entire wall

Exit: cut a piece of fabric of the required size, attach horizontal fasteners to the wall near the ceiling and floor (it can be either hidden or open), attach the finished fabric, beautifully distributing the folds of the drapery over it.

Well, the very last option, which does not require the expenditure of time and effort, but only money, is to order low-rise furniture structures, with all sorts of drawers, shelves, and the tabletop of such a block will be a shelf for lamps and all sorts of little things dear to the heart.

Types of backrests

There are many options for headrests. Each type has its own characteristic differences and is more suitable for one or another design style. Let's take a look at the entire line of these products:

  • Solid wooden headboards are the most common and belong to the classic furniture elements. They can be rectangular, oval or round in shape, have an ornate top line, etc. In addition, such backrests come in different heights, depending on the user’s preferences. The solid surface provides a comfortable feeling when touching your back.
  • Slatted headboards are also classic models. They are distinguished by their beauty and grace, but they are not very comfortable for the back and head. The pressure is directed to small areas of skin that come into contact with the slats.

Even with basic skills in working with tools, strictly following the instructions and advice of professionals, you can make a headboard yourself at home in a fairly short time and with a positive result.

Let's look at how to make a soft headboard for a bed with your own hands.

Materials and tools

Before purchasing materials, you need to decide on the shape and size of the backrest, and calculate the consumption of wood, fabric and filler. The standard model will require the following materials:

  1. Plywood sheet 16 mm thick, 160 cm wide, 60-70 cm high.
  2. A sheet of foam rubber with a thickness of at least 6 cm, equal in size to the dimensions of the plywood blank.
  3. A large padding polyester fabric, which should exceed the size of the foam rubber by 30 cm on each side.
  4. The upholstery is thick, beautiful fabric. The size should also exceed the dimensions of the back by 25-30 cm.
  5. If you need to decorate the upholstery with a carriage tie, you will need buttons or other consumables suitable for this purpose, including strong thread or twine.

During work you will need:

  • An electric jigsaw or hacksaw for making cuts and giving the plywood the desired shape.
  • Screwdriver or electric drill. Set of drills.
  • Stapler for furniture.
  • Pencil or marker for marking workpieces.
  • Measuring tool.
  • Stationery knife. Scissors.
  • Crochet hook.
  • Glue and brush (roller) for applying coating to the surface.

Selecting fabric for headboard upholstery

The backs are covered with various materials, but preference should be given to denser fabrics. They do not stretch or deform from mechanical stress. Bed upholstery with leather or its alternative – eco-leather – is common. The latter is in no way inferior to natural leather in its characteristics, but costs much less.

If your knowledge about the properties of fabrics is superficial and does not allow you to rely on the name, you should pull the fabric in different directions right in the store, carefully examine the density of the threads, feel how thick and durable they are.

The choice of colors is based on the decoration of the room in which the bed will be located and its stylistic orientation. If the headboard is to be the main focus of the bedroom, choose colors that are bright and distinct. To create a unified composition, you should avoid contrasts.

Covering with fabric can occur in different ways. There are several methods that require a number of preparatory work.

If the soft headboard of the bed with your own hands should have the shape of a smooth canvas, the upholstery process is carried out as follows:

  1. A layer of glue is applied to the plywood blank and foam rubber is applied. Sewing with a stapler is unacceptable, because the material is deformed and torn.
  2. A blank made of plywood and foam rubber is covered with padding polyester with the edges folded onto the back side of the product. This layer will prevent the filler from abrading when it comes into contact with the fabric during use.
  3. Place the fabric face down on a table or other flat surface. The workpiece is placed on top of it with the plywood facing up. They are centered relative to each other so that the edges of the material are the same on all sides.
  4. Starting from the center, slightly stretching the fabric, we fasten the fabric along the entire perimeter, making sure that it does not warp or create folds.
  5. In order to hide the staples and edges of the upholstery, a sheet of fiberboard can be attached to the back of the back with short self-tapping screws.

If you plan to cover the headboard using a carriage screed, the process is radically different:

  • Markings are applied to the plywood blank in several rows at equal distances from each other in a checkerboard pattern.
  • At the marked points, holes are drilled using a drill and a drill with a diameter of 3-5 mm.
  • The headboard and foam are connected. Through the holes with a marker, the markings are transferred to the filler and then holes are cut out in it with a stationery knife.
  • Then follows the process of covering with fabric, similar to the previous one.
  • Armed with nail scissors, you need to feel all the holes and make similar ones on the fabric.
  • Pre-prepared buttons with loops made of strong twine threaded through the ears are placed on the front side. They push a hook towards them, grab the thread and pull it to the back side.
  • Having pulled the button to the base as much as possible, the thread is secured to the plywood with a staple.

The finished headboard is installed in the place intended for it.

If desired, you can update the entire bed, creating a piece of furniture that is integral in appearance and style. The knowledge and skills that were acquired while making the upholstered headboard on your own are applicable in this case. Therefore, questions about how to cover a bed should not arise.

How to restore an old bed with your own hands at home - tips and tricks

Do you have an old bed at home that you are planning to get rid of? Do not rush to replace old furniture with new ones, because it can be restored. I offer simple and effective instructions for restoring beds with your own hands at home. Check out the recommendations in this article and bring time-worn furniture back to life.

Benefits of DIY restoration

  • Saving money. A good modern bed costs a lot of money, so why not restore old furniture, which in the end will be no worse.
  • Old furniture is better quality than modern furniture. Until the end of the eighties, Soviet beds were made to last and last, while modern products will last no more than ten years without repair.
  • Fashionable element of retro ambiance. Retro is in fashion, and therefore, by restoring an old bed, you will get a unique element of the surroundings for a very small amount of money.
  • Old furniture can be modernized. With the right approach to restoration, a bed can not only be restored to its original appearance, but also modernized. As a result, furniture that was otherwise thrown away will be relevant when arranging modern interiors.
  • Gaining valuable experience. If the bed restoration is successful, you will gain valuable experience that will be useful when restoring other furniture in the house.

Where to begin

No matter what you decide to restore, you need to start by identifying and assessing the damage that will have to be repaired during the restoration.

If the wear of the bed is insignificant, you can do without disassembling and limit yourself to eliminating cosmetic defects on the back and foot. If there is a lot of damage, the bed will have to be disassembled into individual structural elements, cleaned of accumulated dirt, after which it will be possible to identify all the defects and decide on their elimination.

When is restoration appropriate and when is it not? Any furniture can be restored, even in very poor condition. But you need to understand that the worse the condition of the furniture, the more time, effort and money will have to be spent on restoring it.

An important point is the material from which the bed is made. The easiest way to restore metal products is to simply clean off the rust and oxides, after which you can start painting. Furniture made from chipboard is the most difficult to restore. After more than 10 years of use, particle board loses its former strength, and therefore I do not recommend restoring old broken chipboard beds.

The most popular option is restoring wooden beds. Such furniture, being made in the 50-60s of the last century, is now distinguished by enviable durability and all you have to do is repair chips, cracks and abrasions.

Features of partial restoration

Illustrations Damage to wooden beds and solutions

Cosmetic defects. Minor abrasions are eliminated using masking tinting compounds. Significant defects, including scratches, chips, dents, etc., require preparation of the wooden surface with complete repainting.

Stock creaking under load. Remove the mattress and try to lie directly on the slats; if there is no creaking, then the problem was in the spring mattress. If the squeak remains, tighten all bolted connections in the non-structural frame structure.

Cracking of the supporting frame. Such a defect is caused either by improper use of furniture with excess mechanical load on the bed, or by a violation of the technology in the manufacture of furniture. One way or another, to eliminate the defect, the frame must be disassembled and the damaged part removed. The damaged part of the frame is replaced with a new part made from a new board.

Attention. When repairing the frame, we use dry wood, which does not deform or crack during the drying process.

Required tools and materials

Furniture restoration requires a variety of tools, including:

  • Devices for disassembling cabinet furniture- hex keys for confirmations, spanners for bolted connections, screwdrivers for self-tapping screws.
  • Devices for roughing and grinding surfaces- an industrial hair dryer for softening paint, a sander with a set of sandpaper of different grain sizes.
  • Painting tool- brushes, rollers and sprayers for applying paints and varnishes, as well as spatulas and sandpaper for applying a leveling layer of putty.

In addition to the tool you will need:

  • Paint and varnish materials (paint and varnish materials)- including varnishes, paints and stains.
  • Primers and impregnations- these materials reduce the absorbency of wood, increasing adhesion to coatings.
  • Putties- used to level the relief on wood.
  • Oil and wax impregnations and mastics- to mask cosmetic defects of the old coating.

Brief characteristics of restoration compositions

Illustrations Restoration compositions and their description

Lucky. This category includes surface coating compositions that are used either as a stand-alone coating or applied over other paint and varnish compositions.

Varnishes vary in texture and come in glossy, semi-gloss and matte. Also, varnishes can be colored or colorless.

If wood is treated with stain or other coloring compounds, it is preferable to use colorless varnish.

Enamels and paints. We use these compounds to paint the surface with an opaque layer. The texture of the coating can be glossy or matte.

The use of varnish over paints and enamels is due not so much to the decorative as to the protective effect.

Stains. This is a category of coloring impregnations that stains wood several millimeters deep. Painting with stain is not continuous, but translucent, thanks to which ordinary wood can be given the color of rare species.

Impregnating oils. This is a wide range of impregnations made on the basis of natural oils. Treating wood with such compounds allows you to make the original color more saturated and prevent damage to the wood during prolonged use.

The use of oil impregnations is allowed only on solid wood surfaces.

Methods for eliminating minor defects

Illustrations Ways to quickly eliminate cosmetic defects of old wooden beds

Masking abrasions. Minor abrasions of the paintwork are not a reason for a complete restoration.

Mix 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of unrefined sunflower oil in a small bowl until an emulsion is obtained. Next, dip a thick cloth in the composition and oil the abrasions. As the composition is absorbed, apply it again.

As a rule, for cosmetic masking of abrasions, three layers of the product will be sufficient, with a break for the previously applied layer to dry. To mask scuffs on dark furniture, it is better to use olive or castor oil instead of sunflower oil.

Painting over abrasions with a marker. If the furniture is worn along the edges and in the corners, you can use a matching marker to mask cosmetic defects. During the first painting of the wood, the mark from the marker will be absorbed almost completely, so in order for the abrasion to be almost invisible, it will have to be painted over in several passes.

On the market and in auto parts stores you can purchase a repair marker that masks scratches on the paintwork. This option can also be used for cosmetic restoration of furniture.

Masking scratches with wax. Deep scratches, unlike small abrasions, cannot be hidden with oil or a marker, so for such repairs we will use wax.

Scratches are degreased and rubbed with soft wax. The applied layer of wax is softened with a hairdryer.

After the softened wax has cooled, polish the surface with a soft cloth and no traces of repair will be noticeable.

Varnish layer renewal technology

Let's look at the instructions for updating the varnish layer using the example of restoring the headboard of a bed.

Illustrations Step by step description

Removing the headboard. In order to renew the paintwork, the headboard is separated from the bed. The method of dismantling depends on the type of bed.

Dismantling decorative elements. If the headboard is composite, as in our case, carefully remove the decorative elements.

Grinding. The dismantled and disassembled structure is covered with putty in areas of chips and dents. The putty is matched to the tone of the wood.

After the putty has dried, the headboard is sanded down to wood using 200 and then 80 sandpaper.

We sand the wood with a sander or float. If you hold the surface with your hand, it will not work.

After the wood has been sanded, remove the dust with a solvent.

Applying varnish. To reduce varnish consumption, the wood is impregnated with drying oil or similar deep penetration impregnations. If you need to change the color of the wood, the part can be treated with stain. The problem is that when treated with stain, putty stains will be visible.

The varnish is applied in several layers with a break for the previous layer to dry. After this, the surface can be polished.

If you prefer a glossy surface, as in the photo, use a glossy varnish. If gloss is not needed, use varnish with a matte texture.

Product finishing - decoration

Illustrations Decorating ideas and their descriptions

Decoupage. If a cosmetic defect cannot be removed from the surface of the furniture, why not hide this defect behind a sticker.

Decoupage consists of making decorative appliqués that are cut out from special napkins and glued on top of certain areas of furniture.

Artificial aging. Today, interesting combinations of modern interior decoration with artificially aged furniture are in fashion. Therefore, it may not be worth updating the bed, but rather artificially aging the wooden elements in its structure.

Various methods are suitable for artificial aging, including applying and then sanding paint, brushing wood (combing out soft fibers), etc.

Gilding. Old, shabby furniture can be restored to its original condition, but for a truly chic look it is advisable to cover it with gold.

If earlier the thinnest gold foil was used for gilding, today there is no need for such expenses. Inexpensive “golden” paint can be bought in a can at any construction market.

For a better effect, gilding can be used not only in decorating the bed, but also when decorating other furnishings in the room.

Leather upholstery. Another option for chic decor is upholstery or leather trim. Leatherette or other materials that look like leather can be used as leather.

You can cover the headboard, footboard and sides, as shown in the photo. Under the leather upholstery we place a foam filler.

Let's sum it up

Now you know how to restore an old bed. By the way, the proposed instructions are relevant not only for the bed, but also for any furniture with an all-wood structure. If you have questions during the restoration work, ask them in the comments to this article.

The first thing we see as soon as we cross the threshold of the bedroom is the bed. And whether it will be comfortable for us to be in the room depends on how stylishly it is decorated. Bed linen, its material and style, presence or absence canopy- all of these are important components of the overall impression of the bedroom. But still, the main role belongs to a beautiful headboard - it is the one that can radically change the appearance of your bed, and the whole room as a whole.

Let's talk about the types of headboards for beds

There are as many styles as there are so many design options for bed headboards.

Wooden headboard is rightfully considered a classic of the “bedroom” genre. Depending on how the wood is processed, the bed can organically fit into almost any style - from a bedroom in the good old Victorian style to modern and shabby chic. Ascetic headboards are usually practically devoid of decor; they have a rectangular or slightly rounded shape, and are covered with varnish or paint. More sophisticated options a la Provence can be decorated with wavy patterns, and their most luxurious counterparts (beds in Baroque, Rococo, Classicism and Empire styles) are real works of art. Beds with high headboards- the calling card of sophisticated chic bedrooms.

Idea: If you have boards or old carved shutters or doors, you can install them as a headboard. In the first case, this will give the room an eco-atmosphere, in the second, it will create a vintage spirit.

Metal headboard – another old-timer in the kingdom of beds. It is actively used by many design trends - from romantic vintage and Romanesque styles to strict Scandinavian.

Mosaic and stone headboards. These can be fancy patterns from sea pebbles or pieces of glass, shards ceramic tiles and so on.

Textile used to decorate the head of the bed quite often. The reason for such popularity lies, most likely, in the atmosphere of comfort that the fabric brings to the room. And the wealth of choice of the right fabric also plays a role: heavy velvet is suitable for decorating a bed in the Baroque or Rococo style, but for empire-style rooms it is better to give preference to shiny golden satin.

Headboard in the form of a mirror – it will suit you only if you are not a follower of Feng Shui, since any more or less savvy expert in the principles of this Taoist practice will tell you that the mirror needs to be placed in a different place.

How to decorate a wall where a headboard should be

If you bought a bed without an unusual headboard, there are two options - either you are content with its absence, but somehow decorate the wall above the bed in an interesting way, or you make the headboard yourself. For craftsmen who are accustomed to holding a jigsaw and a furniture stapler in their hands, it will be a small task - just come up with a suitable decor option and implement it. But for those who are unfamiliar with this technique, we have an easier way - to decorate the wall above the bed.

  • Drawings made through curly designs look very stylish as a substitute for a headboard. stencils. They can be either flat or voluminous, that is, made using putty.
  • You can also decorate the wall with purchased self-adhesive film patterns. This is one of the simplest options for decorating a bed.

Advice: Athletes and sports fans can show their imagination: stick hockey sticks on the wall, create fancy patterns from light tennis balls or pucks.

New, original, creative. This design of the headboard for the bed will definitely arouse the interest of guests

When you come home from hard work, you want only one thing: to relax in a cozy atmosphere in your bedroom on your favorite bed. It is one of the most important places for us; you spend a third of your life on it, so it must be comfortable.

The very first thing that catches your eye when you enter the bedroom is the bed. It should be comfortable and beautiful.

But few people think about how to ensure this pleasure. If you are an exception to them, then this recipe for making a luxurious bed is for you. You can imagine an unimaginable variety of ideas for decorating this center of the bedroom, or you can start with the simplest thing - decorating the bed. But how to cover a bed with your own hands?

Of course, you can buy a ready-made bed in a store, but the assortment and price sometimes leave much to be desired. Resorting to the services of manufacturing the desired bed model to order is not very beneficial for our time and wallet. All that remains is to take this, at first glance, difficult and painstaking matter into your own hands.

Tools and materials

Choose fabric for finishing the bed that is non-staining and wrinkle-resistant.

For this process you will need:

  • foam;
  • batting;
  • plywood or hardboard;
  • construction stapler, scissors;
  • any fabric for covering;
  • glue.

The first thing to do is to select the size and shape of the chipboard for covering fabric. It should extend beyond the sheet by 20-40 cm. Thus, there will be a supply of fabric for fastening.

The same must be done with foam rubber. It should be 8-13 cm larger than the bed frame, regardless of whether it is round or square. At the same time, decide in advance which edge of your bed is soft or hard? Depending on this, choose the upholstery option.

Workflow Features

First upholstery method

Build a bed frame and nail plywood onto it.

You need to stuff plywood or hardboard onto a pre-prepared bed frame. At the same time, leave a distance of 5-7 cm at the top in order to secure the foam rubber. The foam rubber is stuffed on top of the plywood, while it is superimposed on the excess part of the plywood that was left in excess. It cannot be nailed without creating a quilted effect, so use a special glue.

When you have finished stuffing the foam rubber, you need to stretch the fabric on top and nail it to the bottom with staples at the bottom of the frame. In the corners you need to gather the fabric into 2 folds, which you place on top of each other and staple them in place at their junction. You can’t stuff staples on top of each other, otherwise it will just be a waste of them. The more you use them, the better the fabric will hold up. Try to nail the staples as far from the edge of the fabric as possible.

Stretch the fabric over the foam and secure it with a stapler,

Here you can also cut out excess fabric, just do not cut off too much, because then arrows and other types of damage may appear on the surface of the fabric. Or the upholstery may simply fall off the frame.

Under no circumstances should the upholstery fabric be stretched too tightly; the seams should not bend. If the pattern or thread strips lie flat and you can't pull a fold in the fabric, you can be sure that you did everything right. Make sure you choose the right fabric.

For different types of upholstery, there are different fabrics to suit your needs. If you plan to place the mattress in a recessed frame, which would be suitable for a round bed, use this upholstery method.

Second upholstery method

Attach the foam rubber to the prepared sheet of plywood using glue or a stapler.

In the same way as in the first case, the frame is covered first with plywood, and then with foam rubber. However, if the sides of your cover will not be even, meaning you will use cords and buttons to create indentations in the material, it is recommended to use batting. This will not create a gap at the top of the bed. Just upholster the frame in the same way; you can add additional fabric at the bottom to hide the fastening points. You can nail plywood to the bottom. Thus the frame is completely upholstered. We put the finished mattress on top and the process is over.

The process of making recesses with buttons in the trim is not particularly complicated. You can draw out the foam rubber in advance, nail it and thread the threads through the fabric, which will subsequently stretch the fabric and buttons will be sewn on top. Or you can drive decorative nails into the places marked on the fabric and simply glue the buttons. They should be the same color as the upholstery, this way you can create a quilted covering.

It is best to choose materials made from natural ingredients.

Upholstery fabric should be selected depending on your preferences. You can upholster beds with velor, velvet, microfiber, jacquard, flock.

If you have allergies, then cover the bed with natural materials, for example, cotton or linen. The latest options can be used for the warm season as replacement upholstery. Cotton does not collect dust, and linen is a durable material. Upholstery colors may also vary depending on the time of year. In summer the upholstery is light, in winter it is dark. At the same time, they should be combined with curtains or decorative pillows or a bedspread.

Before you start covering the bed, carefully inspect the frame for cracks and chips.

  1. Before removing the old covering, be sure to inspect the frame for cracks or damage.
  2. In most cases, it is recommended to change both the padding and the springs. There may be defects in it, or a lot of dust has formed there over time. It is best to additionally secure the new filler with muslin.
  3. Choose fabric with a protective coating. Do not upholster it with nap fabrics or elastic materials. They stretch, and you will be tired of changing the upholstery. Colored designs on fabric are not recommended. When upholstering at home, minor defects will be noticeable.
  4. Make a removable cover or upholstery for the bed.

This way it can be easily cleaned and changed in the off-season or when worn out.

If you want to make a cover that can later be removed, then you need to measure the frame in advance and create a pattern according to it. Then sew a cover to size from pieces of fabric. It is better to use elastic bands for the sides of the cover.

To make an upholstered bed beautiful for a long time, it is best to make the upholstery in 2 layers.

The first is non-removable, and the second is used as a cover. It is better to make permanent upholstery from high-strength fabric such as cotton, silk, linen, satin, or bamboo fabric. In this case, the outer upholstery must be related to the inner one so that no friction or static occurs between them.

There are many main mistakes to avoid. If the wood of the frame is of poor quality, then cracks may appear on it, which will subsequently lead to tears in the expensive fabric. Therefore, never cover a bed made of poor wood with expensive fabric or leather without a base upholstery. When making removable upholstery, carefully select a fabric that will not stretch. Therefore, it is very important to choose high-quality fabric for covers. If you want to wash the upholstery, then make sure that the fabric is washed well and does not lose its color.

If you want to further decorate your updated frame, make a headboard for it. In the same way, make upholstery, only for pieces of plywood folded in half, and attach it all to the bed or to the wall. And our ideal bed is ready. Thus, you don’t have to buy a new bed, but simply update its upholstery. Once all the work is done, you will look differently at your updated bed.
