Basil: Growing a favorite spice and excellent healer from seeds. Growing Basil in a Greenhouse When to Plant Basil Seedlings in a Greenhouse

Basil is a useful spice that gives dishes a spicy taste and pleasant aroma. With the onset of the summer season, I want to get an early harvest of this valuable and tasty spice. With direct sowing in the ground, the harvest will have to wait a long time, since the basil is thermophilic, demanding on the nutritional value of the soil and the rules of agricultural technology. But if you grow it through seedlings, then it will not be difficult to achieve an early harvest of greenery.

Sowing basil for seedlings

The seedling method of planting basil is an opportunity to get early greens and collect full-fledged seed material for planting next season. Healthy and strong seedlings are the key to a good result, so when growing it, you need to pay attention to the timing of planting, as well as the conditions for growing it.

Step 1: determine the landing time

When determining the timing of sowing seeds, you need to focus on the possible timing of planting seedlings in open ground or a greenhouse. In the temperate climate zone, this is approximately the first decade of June. In regions with a warmer climate, seedlings can be transplanted as early as mid-May. By this time, the possibility of return frosts will have passed, stable warm weather will be established, the soil will warm up enough (up to + 10–15 degrees), and weather disasters will not threaten plantings of basil.

Helpful information! In the southern regions, basil is most often planted with seeds directly into the ground, but in the northern regions, you can get a full harvest only through growing seedlings.

In order to accurately determine the timing of sowing, use the following scheme:

  1. As a starting point, we take the estimated date of planting seedlings in a permanent place. Let's say June 1st is a possible date for your area.
  2. It takes 60 days from this date - the required age of seedlings before planting. We receive April 2.
  3. Subtract 2 more weeks. This is the maximum time required for seeds to germinate. The received date is March 19th.
  4. If the seedlings will be grown with picking, that is, with transplanting from a common container into individual ones, then it is necessary to subtract another 4–5 days (time for seedlings to adapt after picking). We get the date of sowing seeds - March 14.

When determining the timing of sowing, the selected variety must also be taken into account. Basil of medium late and late ripening develops more slowly, so its seeds are planted a few days earlier. The sowing time for early and mid-early varieties must be shifted in the other direction. These plants develop faster and can outgrow within the specified time. This is highly undesirable, because overgrown seedlings will take root for a long time.

Note! If the cultivation of basil is planned in a greenhouse, then the sowing dates for seedlings are shifted by two weeks, that is, at the beginning of March.

Step 2: prepare containers

Any container is suitable for sowing basil seeds. When choosing, you should decide in advance whether you will grow seedlings with or without picking seedlings. If a dive procedure is planned, then for the initial sowing, you can choose boxes in which the seedlings will feel free, they will be easy to care for, they can be quickly moved to a new place or deployed to the other side to the light.

When selecting planting containers, keep in mind that their height must be at least 8 cm.

When growing without a pick, individual containers are preferred. In this case, sowing seeds can be done:

  • peat tablets, cassettes and pots;
  • paper honeycombs;
  • cassettes and trays made of PVC and polystyrene;
  • containers from improvised materials, etc.

Photo gallery: individual planting containers for growing seedlings

You should not use very fertile soil: it is useless for germinating seeds, and it can harm - slow down the emergence of seedlings and their growth, provoke diseases

Note! You can use a nutrient soil mixture sold in specialized stores. For its disinfection, a saturated solution of potassium permanganate or Fitosporin is used.

Mixed and disinfected soil mixture, if necessary, is spilled with a nutrient composition. To do this, urea, superphosphate and potassium sulfate (0.5 tsp each) are added to settled water. After the fertilizer has dissolved, moisten the prepared substrate with it. Such watering will make the soil more nutritious, provide the shoots that have appeared with all the necessary elements.

Step 4: processing planting material

Basil seeds will only be active in the presence of heat and sunlight, because their natural habitat is the hot climate of India. Therefore, before planting, it is recommended to warm them up to a temperature of +40 degrees. This can be done on a sunny windowsill or on radiators. After warming up, it is recommended to soak the seeds for a day in warm water (approximately +40 degrees), and then dry them a little.

Helpful advice! For soaking, you can use solutions of growth stimulants Zircon, Albit, etc.

Be prepared for basil seeds to become very slimy when soaked.

Important! High-quality, heated and saturated with moisture seeds will sprout approximately 7–10 days after sowing.

Step 5: plant correctly

Sowing basil is absolutely easy. This procedure includes the following steps:

  1. A drainage layer of expanded clay or pebbles is laid at the bottom of the landing container. Its thickness should be 2-3 cm.
  2. The landing container is filled with the prepared substrate so that at least 1 cm remains to the edges of the landing container.

When filling the container, keep in mind that the moistened soil will settle a little

  3. The soil is slightly compacted and moistened.
  4. Warmed, saturated with moisture and slightly dried seeds are evenly laid out on the surface of the soil.

So that the seedlings do not fight for a place under the sun, it is better to immediately spread the seeds at a distance of 2-3 cm from each other

  5. From above they are sprinkled with soil mixture with a layer of about 0.5 cm. When planting several varieties, labels with names are installed in order to then navigate in the varieties you like.

Fill the cassettes with the remaining soil so that the basil seeds are at a depth of 0.5–1 cm.

  6. The earth is gently sprayed (preferably with a spray bottle) so that the seeds do not wash to the surface. Do not use strong water jets. It is fraught with the fact that the seeds, along with water, can go deep. Because of this, they will germinate for a long time or not sprout at all.

The best way to moisten the earth is spraying with a spray gun

  7. The containers are covered with a film or glass and placed in a well-lit and warm place.

As soon as the landing has been made, the container is covered with glass or polyethylene film to create a greenhouse effect.

seedling care

The optimum temperature for keeping boxes with planted seeds will be + 20-25 degrees. After the emergence of seedlings, the covering material is removed and the containers are placed in a room with a temperature of + 16–20 degrees. In such conditions, seedlings will not stretch.

After removing the film, the basil needs to be provided with regular and timely care.

It is necessary to provide seedlings with a sufficient amount of light. Poor lighting will lead to weakening and stretching of crops. Therefore, place seedling containers in well-lit areas, protected from strong sunlight.

Note! Direct sunlight on young leaves can lead to burns.

Watering

The top layer of soil in the planting tank should not dry out. Without moisture, small plants will begin to wither, stop their growth. Waterlogging the soil also harms hatched seeds. It can be the cause of the death of the roots, their decay, the development of such a disease as the black leg.

Important! If, when examining the seedlings, you notice that a dark constriction has appeared in the lower part of the stem, and the root neck has darkened, these are signs of the black leg disease. It is urgent to treat the seedlings with a solution of copper sulfate: 1 teaspoon of vitriol per 2 liters of warm water.

Basil seedlings love to be watered with settled, warm (at least +22 degrees) water. Watering directly from the tap can lead to the death of the roots. Water the seedlings with caution, you should try to moisten the ground, and not water the leaves. Moisture on the green parts of the plant can lead to the spread of fungal diseases.

Basil seedlings should be watered carefully, making sure they don't fall over.

Helpful information! There is an erroneous opinion that before transporting seedlings to the landing site, it must be well watered. This is not true, because juicy stems and leaves are more fragile, they are more likely to break than slightly wilted ones.

Picking seedlings is an optional process. If the seeds were sown in individual containers, or the sowing was carried out in a sufficiently large tray and the seedlings were not thickened, then it is quite possible to do without picking. It is enough to further thin out the seedlings and pour soil into the container to strengthen the stems of the plants.

If necessary, picking is carried out in the phase of two true leaves. The composition of the soil mixture can be the same as when sowing basil seeds. Picking is carried out as follows:

  1. Individual containers are filled with nutrient soil, slightly compacted.
  2. Make a small indentation in the center.
  3. The seedlings are watered so that it is easily removed from the substrate and the seedlings are easily separated from each other.

Basil seedlings are ready for picking in the phase of 2-3 true leaves

  4. Each seedling is lowered into a prepared hole. The planting depth should be the same as that of the seedlings.

Basil seedlings do not form adventitious roots on the stem, so it is better to dive them without deepening

  5. The sprouts are sprinkled with earth.

Each basil seedling is dived into a separate container.

  6. Carefully watering is carried out, preventing the seedlings from falling.

Immediately after picking, the plants are carefully watered.

7–10 days after picking, seedlings can be fed with urea (1 teaspoon) and superphosphate (0.5 teaspoon) dissolved in water (1 liter). Periodically it is recommended to pollinate the ground in containers with wood ash. It will not only provide seedlings with additional nutrition, but will also be an excellent prevention of fungal diseases.

Video: how to dive basil seedlings

When growing basil seedlings, they try to create comfortable conditions for it. With a sharp change in the artificially created environment - for example, when transplanted into open ground - the plant will experience stress, it can take a long time to recover, to get sick. It is recommended to gradually accustom, prepare seedlings for a new mode of existence. To do this, it is hardened. Start hardening about 2 weeks before planting the plant in a permanent place. It is taken out into fresh air or into a film greenhouse. The main condition: the temperature of the content of seedlings during hardening should not be lower than +5 degrees.

Important! The optimal mode of hardening is to create daytime temperatures in the range of + 15-17 degrees, night - + 12-15. During hardening, watering seedlings is limited.

First, the plants are taken out to fresh air for no more than 2–3 hours, when the air temperature rises to the level necessary for basil.

Transplanting seedlings in open ground

Basil seedlings will be ready for planting in open ground at the age of 50-60 days. By this time, it should have at least 5 true leaves, be healthy and strong. When determining the timing of transplantation, one should be guided by weather conditions: the danger of night frosts should pass, and the soil should warm up to a temperature of at least +10 degrees. For landing, a sunny place protected from the north wind is chosen, the site is carefully loosened and well seasoned with organic matter (1 bucket of rotted manure per square meter). The transplant is carried out as follows:

Note! If the transplant is carried out in compliance with the indicated rules, then in just a few days the basil seedlings will come into force and the bush will begin to grow actively.

Features of planting basil seedlings in a greenhouse

In protected ground, comfortable conditions for planting basil come a few weeks earlier than in open ground. The rules for transplanting basil into a greenhouse do not differ from planting in open ground. The main feature is that in unprotected soil, plants are most often planted in a row or a separate ridge. In greenhouses and greenhouses, basil is used as a compacting plant between tomatoes, eggplants and peppers. For better growth and bushiness, it is recommended to pinch the crown of the seedling. Subject to good soil nutrition, regular and abundant watering, the harvest will be early and of high quality.

In the conditions of the Moscow region, the northwestern and northern regions, it is the cultivation in the greenhouse that will provide an early and plentiful harvest of greenery

Basil compatibility with other plants

Basil refers to satellite plants, that is, to those spicy herbs that secrete specific substances that have a beneficial effect on other crops: enhancing their growth, disinfecting the air, repelling pests. Therefore, basil bushes are often used in joint plantings. Basil grows well with the following plants:

  • tomatoes;

Basil improves the taste of tomatoes, and also repels many pests from tomatoes, including the tomato hornworm.

  • beans. Basil protects bean plantings from damage by the bean weevil;
  • pepper and eggplant;

Experienced gardeners claim that plants help each other in planting basil + pepper

  • fruit trees. Phytoncides secreted by the plant limit the spread of pests and diseases;
  • in the aisles of cabbage, carrots and other vegetables;

The only plants whose neighborhood is not recommended for basil are rue, as well as cucumbers, which do not like combined plantings with any aromatic herbs. Basil itself grows well after those crops under which a large number of organic matter was introduced: legumes, cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes, zucchini, onions, cabbage and carrots, as well as green manure. Given the rules of crop rotation, you can not plant basil in one place for several years in a row. You can return the culture to its original place no earlier than after 4-5 years.

Given the huge number of advantages of basil, its benefits, including for garden crops, you should constantly have this plant in open ground beds and in greenhouses. It remains only to choose your favorite variety - and you can start planting it.

Basil can be grown in greenhouses and heated greenhouses. So, basil, when grown in a greenhouse in winter, can cooperate with other crops: leaf and head lettuce, dill, parsley, green onions. These crops have similar requirements for soil composition, watering and temperature conditions.

You can grow basil in a greenhouse using 2 methods - seeds and seedlings. Planting in a seedling box or a rack in the south is done already at the beginning of March, and in cool regions a month later. They start growing basil with seeds, usually in late April or early May, when the greenhouse or greenhouse is quite warm.

The plants are planted in well-moistened soil to a depth of 1 cm. The seeds are placed at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other, the row spacing is 30-35 cm. In the southern regions, the plants develop stronger, because there the distance is increased by another 10 cm. Then the planting is mulched and covered with a double layer of polyethylene film before emergence. Usually they occur after 10-12 days (at a temperature of 20-25 degrees). Further care for the basil is carried out as usual - as needed, it is thinned out, watered, fed, and the greenhouse is ventilated.

Grass is very sensitive to cold, so it should be sown no earlier than 2 weeks after frost. It is better to wait for it to be more than + 5C at night, then the herbaceous plant will develop very rapidly and in a few weeks will please you with the first harvest of leaves. If the soil is clayey, then it is best to plant basil in seedlings - growing from seeds will not give the expected result, because the plant will be extremely weak. Seeds are shown from the ground after 7-10 days (if you previously soaked in a growth stimulator, then seedlings can be obtained in 4-5 days) and for the next 2 weeks they must be watered abundantly, mixed with a little fertilizer.

Some gardeners use agrofibre in their beds to get faster shoots and to effectively control weeds in the early stages. But labor costs will be very large, because the planting density is high and it is necessary to spend more than one hour of time for high-quality laying of matter on the bed. Basically, this technology is effective in the presence of drip irrigation, because moisture does not fall on the leaves and feeds only the root system. In this way, many diseases that can attack your crop are prevented.

Basil seedlings are transplanted into open ground in May, while the seedlings should have more than 5 leaves. Before planting, about a week in advance, the seedlings begin to harden, why they are taken out of the greenhouse into the open air, gradually increasing the residence time.

If the soil is dense, after each watering it must be loosened to avoid stagnant water. With an excess of moisture in the soil, basil is affected by rot. Also, this disease can appear if cool damp weather sets in. If foci of the disease are found in the plant, damaged leaves are removed, after which they are treated with a fungicide, for example, foundationazole. 1-2 such treatments will stop the spread of the disease. In case of severe damage, the whole plant is dug up and destroyed.

Growing greens in the winter in a greenhouse has become a good business for many gardeners. It is not particularly expensive and at the same time a profitable business. From a financial point of view, basil, the cultivation of which is a fairly simple process, is very beneficial in relation to other crops grown for greens. Basil is an unpretentious crop that can be quite successfully grown in a stationary greenhouse. Soddy land with a light structure is suitable for growing it in a greenhouse.

When seedlings are grown in a greenhouse or on a pallet, constant monitoring of the soil condition is an important factor. The soil should not dry out, but the water should not be allowed to stagnate, excessively plentiful and frequent watering is also harmful, since the shoots that have appeared can become ill with diseases, for example, a black leg. Due to the defeat of the disease, the sprouts die.

How to grow basil from bushes, when to plant it? Planting bushes on the site is carried out in the first decade of July. If plants are planted earlier, this is fraught with their death, since basil does not tolerate low temperatures. Planting seedlings of basil, as well as seeds, occurs in a nutrient soil mixture.

For picking basil, you can use a mixture of the same composition as for sowing. Just add 2 tablespoons of ash and 1 tablespoon (without a slide) of full mineral fertilizer to 5 liters of earth mixture. Mix well so that the fertilizer is evenly distributed in the soil.

Further care consists in regular watering with warm water. If the weather does not allow planting basil at the time you calculated, then after 2-3 weeks, feed the seedlings and pinch the shoots over the 6-8th leaf. 2 weeks before planting, start hardening seedlings in the fresh air. Basil hardening temperature should not be lower than +5…+10°С.

soil for growing basil

Basil cultivation requires fertile and well-groomed soil, which means that we will have to work hard to create the best option for growing a crop. Basil is best planted in well-warmed areas that are protected from wind and drafts. The plant prefers light sandy loam, well seasoned with organic matter. Legumes, potatoes, tomatoes and cucumbers are considered the best predecessors of a plant in a garden, as organic fertilizers are applied under them. Soil preparation for growing basil in open ground begins in the autumn, when the garden is well dug up and fertilized. The depth of the dig is about 20-25 cm, about a shovel bayonet, soil fertilizers (per 1m2) - 3-5 kg of humus or compost, 22-25 g of superphosphate and about 15 g of potassium salt. If basil is planned to be grown on heavy soils, clay and loam, then from autumn it is required to form the correct ridges, which in the spring should be well killed with a hoe (depth up to 15 cm). Basil Care

In fact, growing and caring for basil is not particularly difficult, you just need to study the technology of growing basil and follow a certain pattern. Basil should be broken through for planting density, tearing off the top shoots, removing flowering from young plants, weeding weeds in a garden in a timely manner, watering basil and loosen the soil. Also, you should not allow the thickening of the basil planting and high soil moisture, otherwise, the basil will suffer from gray mold.

Conditions for growing basil at home in the garden and in the greenhouse, photo description. Clove aroma, caramel, growing in the country. Garden basil refers to spicy herbs. In the basil, everything you see has a completely delicious, pleasant, spicy smell.

The value of the leaves lies in the full range of useful vitamins C, B1, B2, PP, as well as with a small composition of essential oils. Basil is often planted in strategic places to scare away various annoying insects, such as flies or mosquitoes. And what is no less important - the insecticidal properties of this plant are used during the protection of other useful plants from pests, such as aphids or spider mites.

To do this, simply plant the basil in a convenient pot and place it near the affected plant. People from different countries have known about the beneficial and tasty properties of basil leaves for a very long time. As a medicinal plant, it is immediately used to stop a headache or as a gargle for a sore throat. Basil belongs to a number of annual, spicy, garden plants.

The maximum height of the basilica is 80 centimeters. Always with a huge number of leaves, which densely spuds the plant. You can see the flowering of basil from mid-July to early September.

Ripe seeds look small and can be stored for up to 5 years.

Conditions for growing basil outdoors

For growing basil, you need to choose only the most fertile soil, otherwise the plant will develop poorly or not at all. Colds adversely affect the plant. Low temperatures can completely kill him.

The best place will always be a well-lit area. Basil seeds for seedlings are sown, as a rule, only in early April, no later. For seedlings, a small box or pot with a well-watered soil mixture is suitable.

Seeds are planted to a depth of 1 cm, sometimes half a centimeter, and the distance between the rows is about 5 cm. Next, we put the box in a warm, well-lit place where the air temperature is at least 20 degrees.

At this temperature, you will observe the shoot in 5 days. The next step is to start planting basil seedlings in pots and then to a permanent place in the garden. We are used to soaking seeds before planting.

With these seeds, you can not carry out this procedure, while you should always keep the soil in the box in a wet state, do not allow it to dry out. In no case should you use cold water for watering, only warm!

Cold water contributes to the appearance of the disease - black leg. If you have not spared the cold water and the total amount of water in general, the black leg will need additional measures taken.

To combat the black leg, pour all the soil in the box with a solution of copper sulphate (mix half a teaspoon of vitriol per liter of water). The permanent place of the basil in the garden must be chosen correctly, taking into account the fact that basil cannot grow in the same place each once. The best option is to return the plant to its old place only for the 10th year of cultivation. We start planting plants in open ground at the end of May.

At the same time, we try to choose a cloudy day for planting or when the sun is not very hot. After that, thoroughly water all the plants.

Basil care, all the secrets

All care for basil throughout the season will only consist in cleaning the soil around from weeds, as well as occasionally loosening the ground. And of course - water, about 10 times during the growing season.

You must understand that frequent watering favorably affects the appearance of new leaves. The first month of the plant goes very badly, as it develops slowly, gaining strength.

The best option for the first month of growing is if you cover all the plants with a film to maintain a warm temperature and retain moisture. You need to cut the greens even before flowering, while cutting leaves and branches up to 10 cm. We proceed to complete cutting only during the flowering period , at this time, the greens acquire the maximum taste and smell. In cooking, both fresh and dried leaves, basil branches are used. It gives a unique taste to everything you throw it on.

Basil, of course, is not as popular with us as the original spices - dill or horseradish. But in India, it grows everywhere, and is used not only as a spicy plant. There it is considered a sacred plant that protects the home from evil spirits and brings good luck. Therefore, it is supposed to be grown wherever possible - in front of the front door, on windows, in gardens.

It would not be superfluous to say that the taste of basil is very harmoniously combined with the taste of tomatoes, so it is used in the preparation of sun-dried tomatoes, as well as in the recipe for classic pizza sauce, pesto, bruschetta, etc.

Bruschetta or bruschetta. Traditional Italian appetizer.

It will take no more than 5-10 minutes to cook. cut the bread into slices and fry it in a pan or grill until slightly golden brown. Grate the fried slices of bread with a piece of garlic. Tomatoes, if desired, peel and cut into cubes or slices. if the tomatoes are cut into small cubes, then mix the chopped tomatoes with herbs, salt and pepper. Drizzle lightly with olive oil. for each fried piece of bread, grated with garlic, put tomatoes (slices or already prepared stuffing from tomatoes and herbs). Salt, pepper, if desired, add a couple of basil leaves.

What's more, for those who grow tomatoes in a greenhouse, basil can be a very useful compacting plant. Basil bushes planted between tomato bushes repel some pests with their pungent smell. Well, at least that's what the "popularity" says. I didn’t particularly notice that the basil scared someone away, but we don’t have anyone to scare away from the tomato ... Or maybe that’s why there is no one? ...

How to grow excellent basil seedlings? There is nothing easier. Do not believe in fairy tales about capriciousness, whimsicality and other tricks of the basil. The main thing to remember is that basil is a very thermophilic plant. It does not tolerate even short-term frosts (because it grows very poorly on our street). And he loves the sun.

So, we grow seedlings of basil. When to sow seeds? I do this quite early - at the beginning of March, and if you really want to - you can sow even at the end of February. The fact is that the first month basil grows slowly, and planted in March, by May it reaches just the size “suitable” for planting in a greenhouse.

I sow in small cassette pots, the volume of land in each is about 100 milliliters. I put a few seeds in each pot - 2-3-4 things. Seeds are deepened by 0.5-1 centimeter, watered abundantly and placed in a very warm place. The warmer it is, the faster they will rise. Approximately at + 25, shoots appear in 5 days.

At first, seedlings require a lot of light, otherwise they will stretch in warmth, although this is not so scary. You can grow basil seedlings on the west and east windows, although on the south, of course, the seedlings will turn out better. I won’t be surprised if something grows on the north window. You can grow 2-3 plants in a pot this way, and then plant them in a permanent place. Or you can leave 1 most beautiful bush. In general, different varieties bush in different ways, the usual, “classic”, bushes well.

In such a volume, 100 ml, you can grow basil throughout March and April, and plant it in a greenhouse in May. There is no need to dive the rasada, at least I see absolutely no point in this - the basil root system is already superficial and fibrous.

It should be noted again that I mainly use basil as a compacting plant between tomato bushes. For all our needs, we have more than enough 6-10 bushes, 2-3 roots each. But we don't use it very much. If you want to grow it for sale or you just get bored of its 100 bushes, then it will not be a problem to grow seedlings in a crowd in one box, basil tolerates transplanting and picking normally, almost does not fade, it only slows down in growth for several days.

If you plant 1-2 plants in a permanent place between tomato bushes, then pinch the top of them and your basil will begin to actively bush.

Basil is very hungry for nitrogen-rich and humus soils. If you plant it in well-composted soil and water heartily, preferably every day, then the bushes will grow very quickly in the greenhouse, and will soon bloom with rather fragrant white or lilac flowers. In the black earth region and in the south, there is apparently no point in planting in a greenhouse. And in the Moscow region and in the north-west, the basilica in the greenhouse is the place, in the open field it succeeds only in warm years.

Which basil is better - green or red? Everyone answers this question on their own, it is only a matter of taste. I prefer the green version. There are also small-leaved forms similar to thyme, and even lemon-scented varieties. But this is quite an amateur, I prefer the classic basil.

Growing basil is quite possible at home, on the window. A basil bush of 2-3 pinched, bushy shoots will suffice in a pot with a volume of only 1-1.5 liters. The main thing is to water it properly, and when the lower leaves begin to turn yellow, it means that you have not fed the plant for a long time. Pour it with complex fertilizer, which contains nitrogen, potassium and iron without fail.

Fresh and dried herbs are the best seasonings for tasty and healthy dishes: salads, soups, fish, pasta and meat.

For example, basil, adored by all culinary specialists, can be grown not only in a garden bed, but also on a windowsill. Learn how to grow this fragrant spice, rich in essential oils and other beneficial substances, under different conditions.

Growing basil at home: soil preparation

If you will be growing basil in an all-purpose soil, there is no need to prepare it for planting. The main thing is to ensure good drainage by placing it on the bottom of the container (pot).

If you use garden soil, make it more fertile and loose. To do this, we mix humus, soil and peat in equal proportions: such soil will pass air well and will be an excellent environment for growing basil indoors.

As for drainage, they will serve as medium-sized pebbles or expanded clay. The thickness of the drainage layer should be 4-5 cm.

Basil: planting and care at home

Basil on the windowsill: growing from seeds

Having prepared containers or pots with drainage and soil, we start planting seeds.

Seeds of basil, like other spicy plants, are dressed in a thick shell soaked in oils: it prevents them from germinating quickly. Therefore, before planting, it is necessary to keep the seeds warm for one and a half to two weeks so that they warm up and the essential oils disappear. And a day before planting, fill the seeds with warm water to soften the shell.

We plant the prepared seeds into the soil by 1 cm, throwing several seeds into the hole at once: then we will remove the extra sprouts.

If you will sow achenes in long containers, we observe a row spacing of 5 cm.

We will find out what conditions are necessary for indoor basil to grow green mass:

  • Warm. To get friendly shoots, after planting the seeds, we cover the containers with a film and put them on a warm window sill without drafts. The temperature under the shelter should be kept within 23-25 ° C. So that the soil does not mold, every day we remove the film for 10 minutes.

When shoots appear (somewhere in the 2nd week), we gradually remove the film and lower the temperature regime to 21-22 ° C.

  • Lighting. We provide the basilica with good lighting: with its deficiency, the seedlings will become stunted, they will not be able to grow a good leafy mass. If there is not enough light due to the fact that you have northern windows or it is winter in the yard, we use fitolamps or other devices.

Important: for normal development, we provide plants with at least 15 hours of continuous lighting.

  • Care. It consists in regular loosening and watering. Water the young basil with warm water every morning, and if it is too hot and the soil has time to dry out by evening, water it in the evening. We loosen the soil every 2 weeks. As soon as lateral branches appear on the stems, we feed the plants with a complex of organic fertilizers.

As soon as the seedlings turn into fragrant bushes, you can cut off the top of the young shoots to add to different dishes. After that, the bush will branch even better and will not bloom. Flowering should not be allowed because the leaves will become so bitter that they will not be eaten.

Now you know how to grow basil at home. We learn how it is grown in the garden.

If you want to grow your own basil, planting and caring for it outdoors seems daunting at first glance. It is easy to grow from seedlings or directly from seeds.

How to grow basil seedlings

To begin with, let's decide on the varieties: which ones are best suited for cultivation in the garden or garden. If you need a seasoning with a strong smell and a lot of vitamins, we buy purple seeds. If you prefer a subtle aroma and taste, green basil is the better choice.

Now we will find out when and how to grow seedlings for subsequent transplantation into beds.

Basil: growing from seeds in seedlings

When to grow basil seedlings? It is better to sow the seeds in boxes 45 days before planting in the garden - around the end of February or the beginning of March. Since at this time the daylight hours are lengthened, the seedlings will not have to be illuminated with fitolamps.

Whether it is green basil or purple basil, seedlings can be grown in the following ways:

  1. Classic way. We lay drainage on the bottom of the box and fill it with universal or prepared soil (a mixture of equal parts of peat, earth and humus). We spill the soil with warm water and make centimeter indentations. We sow the seeds, cover with a film and put the box on a warm, bright windowsill.

When shoots appear, remove the film, and in the future regularly water the seedlings and keep the temperature at least 22 ° C. After the seedlings have a few leaves, we plant them in the garden.

  1. Using hydroponics. In this case, instead of soil, we pour expanded clay, yellow peat, household mineral wool mixed with a complex of minerals into boxes.

Hydroponic seedlings need to be watered frequently as they dry out quickly. After 20 days, we plant seedlings in the garden.

  1. Seedling in a snail. A way that saves a lot of space and retains moisture for a long time. We make a snail like this: we take a foam rubber substrate and lay out a layer of soil on it, on top - basil seeds with a distance of 5 cm between them. We roll everything into a roll.

The soil in the snail dries out for a long time, so frequent watering is not needed. When the seedlings sprout and get stronger, we transplant them into a garden bed.

We plant seedlings in a sunny place, in loose, mineral-rich soil, but not the one where it grew last year. If you violate these rules, the plants will grow slowly and often get sick. And one more thing: landing is made only after the cessation of night frosts.

How to plant seedlings in the garden
  • We prepare the bed by adding a mixture of peat and humus (compost) at the rate of 2 kg of the mixture per square meter of land.
  • We make rows, maintaining a distance of 30 cm between them.
  • We plant seedlings so that the distance between seedlings is 20 cm.
  • We water the bed with settled water.

Seedlings need regular loosening, watering and fertilizers. We water the seedlings every day with warm water so that they are well rooted. Then we water them only as the soil dries up, avoiding drying out. Waterlogging is also unacceptable - plants can rot.

Once every two weeks we loosen the soil in the aisles and around the basil seedlings. We remove weeds and water the ridges after weeding.

We fertilize the plants on the 12th day after planting: we breed 2 tbsp. spoons of nitrophoska in 12 liters of water and apply fertilizer at the rate of 3 liters per square meter.

Growing basil outdoors with seeds

If you do not want to mess with seedlings, we will learn how to grow basil in the open field by seed. Basil, planting and caring for which is very simple, is sown at different times depending on the climatic zone.

If you live in the southern part of the country, we sow the seeds in mid-late April, if in the middle - in the middle or end of May, when the soil warms up enough.

To speed up the germination of seeds, 2 weeks before sowing, we warm them in a hot place with a temperature of about 30 ° C to eliminate essential oils. The day before sowing, soak them in almost hot water.

We sow the seeds in the garden in the same way as with the seedling method, deepening them into the ground by no more than a centimeter. After the emergence of seedlings, we regularly water them, loosen the aisles, weed and feed them.

When the plants grow to 20 cm, cut off the tops so that more green mass grows.

The care of basil also includes the timely removal of damaged and dried shoots and the prevention of flowering: if it blooms, it will lose its taste. To prevent this from happening, we break off the tops of the shoots with leaves, leaving 4 leaves on the branch. From this, the bush will branch and grow green even better.

Most often, basil is grown in vegetable gardens, orchards and at home. But it is much better to grow a basil plant in a greenhouse, and here's why.

Benefits of growing basil in a greenhouse

  • It grows faster and gains green mass.
  • It is not attacked by pests.
  • It is protected from temperature extremes.
  • If the greenhouse is heated, growing basil in the winter becomes a habit: it will supply you with vitamins all year round.
  • If you plant other greens next to it, eggplants, tomatoes and other crops, the basil plant, which can be grown in many ways, will not oppose such a neighborhood.

The greenhouse method has another plus: it grows so many leaves that there is nowhere to put them. So, the surplus can be sold!

What varieties of basil can be grown in a greenhouse

Most often, lovers of spicy greens cultivate the following varieties in greenhouse conditions:

  • Basil cinnamon (Mexican). A compact cultivar with attractive clumps of light green foliage that smells and tastes like cinnamon.
  • basil camphor. A beautiful bush with bright green leaves with a clove smell and astringent taste.
  • Lemon basil. A well-branched plant with lush greenery of large, pale green leaves exuding a pleasant lemon scent.
  • purple basil. It is valued in Indian and Caucasian cuisine as a seasoning for sauces and meat dishes. The sweetish taste of the leaves allows you to add them even to desserts.

We decide on the varieties and find out what kind of greenhouse should be for growing basil.

Basil: growing conditions in a greenhouse

If you intend to grow basil only in the warm season, a regular greenhouse or greenhouse will do. If you want to get vitamin greens all year round, you will need a heated greenhouse.

What should be the winter greenhouse

  • ventilated. From time to time, the greenhouse needs to be ventilated, so it should be with vents. And so that the icy air does not pass inside, it is necessary to equip the entrance with a small vestibule.
  • Warm. If possible, you can make a greenhouse when one of the walls is the wall of the house. Leaving the house, the heat penetrates into the greenhouse, which allows you to save on its heating. The winter greenhouse can be made of polycarbonate or glass. With the onset of cold weather, it is heated with a stove, heater or electric boiler.

To maintain the required temperature in the greenhouse, we lay out roofing material around its perimeter, and on the ridges - biological insulation in the form of a mixture of straw and rotted manure. This mixture should be covered with polyethylene for several days, and then distributed over the beds and poured over it with a thick layer of soil.

How to grow basil in winter

Basil will not grow well in dense heavy soils with a poor composition - it needs loose, fertile soil. First, we remove the top layer of soil and replace it with a mixture of sand, peat and garden soil.

Before sowing seeds, we add rotted manure to the beds in a ratio of 4 kg per square meter.

A couple of weeks after sowing, we fertilize the soil by dissolving urea or chicken droppings in water.

How to grow basil from seeds in a greenhouse

To get an early harvest, it is better to grow basil from seeds using the seedling method:

  1. We fill boxes or containers with light universal primer.
  2. We spill the soil with warm water.
  3. Scatter the basil seeds on the surface without deepening them. You can sprinkle them a little with earth.
  4. We cover the box with foil and wait for the shoots. As soon as they appear, remove the film.
  5. When 2 leaves appear on the seedlings, dive them.
  6. We leave a distance between seedlings of 5 cm, remove excess shoots.

After 30-45 days, we plant seedlings in greenhouse beds. It is advisable to do this in early spring, planting achenes in the winter to get an early harvest. We plant the seedlings in shallow rows so that a distance of 15 cm is observed between the seedlings.

Greenhouse basil: care

To get a rich harvest of basil greens, we provide it with proper care.

  • warm environment. The plant develops better at a temperature of 22-28 degrees. If it is a warm season outside, we ventilate the greenhouse more often so that there is no waterlogging, but do not forget that basil does not like drafts.
  • Basil: watering. Every week, we abundantly spill the ridges with cool water from watering cans with wide sprayers.
  • cut. In order for the plants to branch and overgrow with foliage better, we make the first cut as soon as they grow to 20 cm. We cut the branches so that a stump with a couple of leaves remains.
  • Basil: top dressing. After cutting, water the ridges abundantly and fertilize. Top dressing of basil is possible with an aqueous solution of urea or chicken droppings.

Thanks to this care and cultivation method, you will be provided with healthy and nutritious greens all year round: in just one season, you can get 2-7 kg of product per square meter!

Now you know how easy it is to care for basil, which even the most inexperienced gardener can grow. Start with basil, and gradually you will learn how to grow any herb!
