Nokia 6 on android. Sound and quality of music playback

Display and sound

The Nokia 6 is equipped with perhaps the most popular display of this season: LCD, 5.5 inches, resolution 1920 × 1080 pixels (pixel density - 403 ppi). There is nothing to stand out, competitors with exactly the same screen are a dime a dozen, but relevant. The oleophobic coating is in place, as I noted above, there is no air gap between the matrix and the glass, but there is a polarizing layer, as expected. Viewing angles are free.

However, Nokia could stand out by adjusting the display of its older smartphone - at least Lumia devices often looked pretty good in this regard. But alas, nothing out of the ordinary.

The brightness is 478 cd / m2 - the smartphone is comfortable to use in the bright sun, the picture not only remains readable, but also does not completely fade. I would not watch a movie sitting on a bench, but you can read messages in the messenger without straining your eyes at all.

But the contrast is not impressive - 1005: 1, the minimum luminosity of the black field - 0.39 cd / m2. You can, of course, make a reservation on duty about the "norm for an IPS-matrix", but in fact, almost all competitors have this "norm" a little higher. On the other hand, the gap is not catastrophic, and all IPS-screens against the AMOLED background look about the same pale, so the competition is doubtful anyway.

You unconsciously expect something special from Nokia in terms of fine-tuning your smartphone - and even if it's a little “not the same” Nokia (too many people have flowed under the bridge), you still feel a slight disappointment when you see in front of you “as usual” customized screen. Well, as the famous footballer used to say, your expectations are your problems. The average gamut is 2.19, which is very good, but the curves dance nicely from shade to shade. The temperature jumps from 8000 to 9500 K, on average sticking to values around 8500 K. The colors are cold, it can be seen with the naked eye, and it cannot be changed in the settings.

The average DeltaE deviation for the extended Color Checker palette (grayscale + a wide range of color shades) is 6.90, which is even worse than most competitors, although today it is very difficult to find a smartphone that is carefully tuned and not sharpened for displaying an excessively cold picture. Be that as it may, the Nokia 6 does not look particularly weak in terms of the screen - just another smartphone of the mid-price range with all the charms inherent in most representatives of its kind (large and bright Full HD display with free viewing angles) and disadvantages (unsuccessful settings).

The eldest of the new generation "Nokia" is not some kind of special music smartphone (it did without the amplifier and DAC highlighted in a special line), but it is pleasant to listen to music on it. The bundled headset is not very successful - it sounds acceptable, but these are classic earbuds, which are long overdue to replace at least with in-ear headphones, even Apple has already done this. On the other hand, Nokia 6 has two loudspeakers - along with the one on the lower edge, the speaker is also used, which is above the display. As a result, the sound is not only quite loud, but also boasts some kind of volume and detail. Pleasantly.

⇡ Hardware and performance

Unfortunately, when HMD Global returned Nokia decided to save on the main thing - the hardware platform. Instead of the expected according to the positioning of Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 series "six" received Snapdragon 430 - a pretty decent and energy efficient system-on-a-chip, nevertheless focused on smartphones from the price category "up to 10 thousand rubles." It consists of eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.4 GHz and an Adreno 505 graphics subsystem clocked at 450 MHz. The technical process by today's standards is ancient - 28 nm, so energy efficiency is achieved rather due to the general weakness of the system and any optimizations.

Probably, the developers thought that on "pure" Android such a SoC would be enough to perform all the main functions - and, in fact, they are right. The smartphone works quite smoothly, "holds" many tabs and does not slow down in key applications, although it does not break speed records. A sufficient amount of RAM also helps - 3 GB, this is enough for a modern smartphone. The Arte Black version has 4 GB at all - there is even a surplus and a reserve for the future.

But the idyll, unfortunately, does not last long - after a week and a half of using the smartphone began to work slower, which could not cope with and the system reboot. Salvation came a little later - with the next Android update (there were already two of them during testing - so far, the friendship between Google and HMD Global has not cracked). But every time to hope only for this is somehow sad. In terms of comfort of use, Nokia 6 is far from being a full-fledged "flagship". Not everything is smooth with the device and with heat dissipation - we used the gadget, of course, not in ideal temperature conditions (not only in finally summer Moscow, but also in the hell of Southeast Asia), but in parallel with the tested OnePlus 5 (wait for a review in the near future), for example, remained barely warm, while Nokia regularly became uncomfortably hot, even if the situation never came to reboot and freezes.

You won't be able to play more or less sophisticated games on Nokia 6 - you will have to limit yourself to some simple projects. If you are not a gamer or dream of the smartest smartphone, everything is fine. But if performance means a lot to you, then you have a wide choice - most of the direct competitors outperform the "six" in this aspect.

The built-in memory in Nokia 6 is 32 GB. Quite enough. If you don't think so, then you can always donate a second SIM card and put in a memory card (up to 256 GB).

⇡ Communication and wireless communications

I just mentioned two slots for SIM-cards (of course, nano-standard). It is worth noting that there are no surprises in working with them - there is only one radio module, so the smartphone addresses them alternately. Nokia 6 is successfully friends with 4G networks - it does not set any connection speed records (only the fourth LTE category, with a peak download speed of 150 Mbps), but it works stably - there is support for all the necessary bands.

Almost all wireless modules are in place: Bluetooth 4.1, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n / ac and NFC, and full-fledged, with support for contactless payment. The only thing missing is the IrDA - but not that it was a critical loss.

The official website states that the Nokia 6 navigation module works only with GPS (A-GPS) and GLONASS, but when checking the connection, the smartphone also got in touch with Chinese satellites (Beidou). Sabotage? Espionage? Made in China, and Qualcomm platforms have long been familiar with this system too. No navigation problems: within 20 seconds after launch, the smartphone finds 20-25 satellites, establishing contact with 14-17 of them and determining the location with an accuracy of 6-8 meters. I couldn't wait for more accuracy from the gadget, but this is quite enough for normal walking and car navigation.

⇡ Camera

But the camera in Nokia 6 is surprisingly good for a smartphone of this class. This is a 16MP module with aperture lens ƒ /2.0 - without a fashionable second sensor, but the only one that is has standard dimensions (1 / 3.06 ″, pixel size - 1 micron) and the software is good friends with it.

Friends precisely in terms of the quality of the pictures. The smartphone produces a very pleasant JPEG with good, that is, natural and moderately bright, color reproduction and a decent dynamic range. What's most curious is that the Nokia 6 shoots well in low light - besides, there is no optical stabilizer here. The smartphone keeps the shutter speed on the machine within the bounds of decency, it is quite easy to get an unstained picture, and the photosensitivity is enough for the image to retain relatively good detail - at least on the smartphone screen. When viewed on the monitor, of course, it is noticeable that these are just "smartphone" pictures. Well, we must not overdo it with the "lack" of lighting - it's still not or Huawei P10.

The disadvantages of the Nokia 6 camera are in the operation of the application. It is very, if I may say so, tight - it opens slowly, saves images for a long time, the camera also squeaks into focus, and sometimes refuses to do this (you have to redo the same frame several times). The interface does not shine either - it is quite simple, but to enable manual mode, for example, you have to make a couple of unnecessary movements.

Nokia 6: Snapshot Gallery

The camera can record videos in Full HD resolution.

The front camera received a matrix with a resolution of 8 megapixels and a lens with aperture ƒ / 2.0 - again, very good for a mid-range smartphone. There is no autofocus and no flash. But as, for example, a smartphone does not smear, the focus is set to a normal distance. In normal light, selfies are good, in low light, of course, details are lost - everything is as usual.

⇡ Autonomous work

The Nokia 6 has a battery with a capacity of 11.4 Wh (3000 mAh, 3.8 V). To be honest, at the first glance at a not too thin smartphone, you expect more - at least competitors allow themselves it. In fact, Nokia 6 has no special problems with autonomy. The device does not break records, but it can withstand a working day with a noticeable load, and under a standard scenario it will live through a day, or even a little more. In any case, everyone has long been accustomed to putting smartphones on charge every day - the Nokia 6 will not force you to give up this habit, but you will not have to run in a panic in the middle of the day looking for a power outlet or an external battery.

The Nokia 6 is a bit of a cheat when it comes to power consumption. The device actively uses automatic brightness adjustment not for external illumination, but for the situation and the current picture on the screen, and it cannot be turned off. In our traditional test with HD video playback at maximum brightness, with Wi-Fi enabled and auto-update, this helped the smartphone to last as much as thirteen hours. But the image, even at maximum brightness, was slightly dimmer than we would like and than what the Nokia 6 is actually capable of. In the PC Mark battery test, the gadget shows a quite normal result - 5 hours 13 minutes.

The Nokia 6 is charged using the (almost archaic) microUSB port - but it claims to support Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 technology. In twenty minutes, half of the battery will not fill up, the smartphone is gaining a charge evenly. The entire battery is filled in about 2.5 hours of charging from a proprietary adapter with an original wire. This is, of course, not very fast - QuickCharge implies different numbers. But using third-party wires and charger will be even slower.

⇡ Conclusion

The Nokia 6 is about as expected. In its first smartphones, HMD Global did not try to recreate the sometimes experimental spirit of “that same Nokia,” flirting with forms and operating systems. No, this is an ordinary Android-device with ordinary characteristics, but executed very neatly and with high quality.

Against a general, mostly Chinese, background, this smartphone (also made in China, of course) does not impress with performance (almost all key competitors are more powerful), but it is pleasant to hold it in your hands, here is a "pure" Android of the latest version, which is promptly updated, well and cherished inscriptions in place. As a bonus - decent shooting quality by the standards of the class.

Yes, there were no engineering miracles - and I honestly don't think they will follow in the future - but as a sensible alternative to the Redmi 4X, Honor 6X, or for those who value image more than performance, the returned Nokia is fine.

Advantages:

  • build quality and workmanship;
  • good camera;
  • pure Android 7.1.1 receiving live updates;
  • decent sound;
  • legendary name.

disadvantages

  • boring design;
  • not too well located and too small fingerprint scanner;
  • poor performance;
  • slow camera operation.

HMD Global, specially created to revive the Finnish brand, did not immediately fire from all the guns. It often happens that the first flagship model appears, which holds the chest with a wheel and declares its readiness to overthrow the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S. Let us recall, for example, which stalled even before the first device reached a potential buyer.

HMD Global did a bit smarter by quietly bringing three inexpensive smartphones with less expressive characteristics to the market - simultaneously probing the willingness of buyers to respond to the name and counting on at least some sales. ... The thing, frankly, is more than controversial, but it performed its role perfectly - everyone started talking about the "return of the legend". Against the background of these conversations, it is possible to slowly expand the sale of smartphones.

The three presented models fall in the price range from 10 to 16 thousand rubles - the most popular among buyers. All three smartphones are similar, they have a common design (which is good), but not outstanding characteristics against the background of Chinese competitors. However, and not a failure either. Today we'll take a closer look at the eldest of the three, the Nokia 6.

The smartphone is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 platform, is equipped with 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of flash memory, a 5.5-inch LCD display with Full HD resolution, and a fingerprint scanner. The main feature of the smartphone (in addition to the two "Nokia" inscriptions - on the front panel and back cover) is "pure" Android of the latest version (7.1.1 Nougat) with the promised maximum prompt updates. Nokia, or HMD, claims to work very closely with Google.

⇡ Appearance, ergonomics and software

While many companies are struggling trying to make smartphones different from another "black rectangle", Nokia decided to rush against the tide, making its devices deliberately simple in design: without a curved back panel, frameless screen and other tweaks. But at the same time, the "six" is not at all devoid of breed.

For a smartphone for 16 thousand rubles, the Nokia 6 is executed excellently - if you will surprise no one with a completely glass-covered front panel, then the edges and the back cover made of matte metal for the budget segment have not yet become a matter of course. The nicest detail is the two frames of polished, unpainted metal around the perimeter. The smartphone is pleasant to use and the build quality is excellent.

Nokia 6, front panel: above the screen - earpiece and front camera, below the screen - three navigation keys, a fingerprint scanner is built into the central one

But the Nokia 6 is a big smartphone. It does not stand out in this respect compared to its direct competitors with displays of the same diagonal (,), but this is perhaps the only good news. It is not easy to operate with one hand - there are wide frames around the screen, the body is rather thick (but not slippery). I also note that the Home key is too low - to touch it with your thumb, you need to bend it at an unnatural angle. It is advisable to do this by holding the smartphone with the other hand, otherwise it will not take long to drop it. An additional awkwardness is that this is the key with a built-in fingerprint scanner, so you have to touch it every time you want to do something with your smartphone. Inconvenient, the location of the sensor on the back cover would have looked more appropriate.

There are five color options for the Nokia 6: Black, Silver, Indigo, Copper, and Glossy Arte Black (with O a larger amount of RAM and non-volatile memory, more expensive and not yet officially sold in Russia). On the back cover in the matte version there are prints, but I would not say that in particularly critical quantities - nothing terrible happens, this is not Honor 9. With the front panel, everything is fine too - there is an oleophobic coating, and quite effective.

Nokia 6 top: 3.5 mm headset / headphone mini-jack and plastic insert for better signal reception

Nokia is back. However, with the Nokia 6, the start of our tests turned out to be a little crumpled. The smartphone certainly has good workmanship, is attractive in terms of cost and, despite the large display size, can offer good battery life. Nevertheless, there are a few shortcomings in the equipment, and the moderate performance limits the enjoyment of using this smartphone a little. The camera takes detailed photos in daylight, but exhibits certain drawbacks at dusk.

Angled aluminum body

The workmanship of the Nokia 6 is noteworthy. The body of the smartphone is cut from a single piece of aluminum and looks very solid. In addition, fingerprints are hardly visible on the matte and slightly rough back of the silver model we tested.

Of course, the design may not be to everyone's liking, since the body of the Nokia 6 is very angular and the sharp edges are especially noticeable when the device is in the hands. Whether it makes users feel annoyed or rather robust and expensive will ultimately determine personal preferences.

Nokia 6 has good build quality - but rather angular

Good image quality and battery life

With a 5.5-inch diagonal display with a 16: 9 aspect ratio, the Nokia 6 looks relatively wide. But users, in turn, get a large screen area, that is, the smartphone is aimed at multimedia fans who do not want to spend too much money. The screen, with its 530 cd / m2 maximum brightness, shines so brightly that content is easily discernible even in bright sunlight. Full HD resolution provides a decent level of image detail.

In our online testing, the Nokia 6 with its 3,000mAh battery lasted around 9 hours, which is good, but not the most outstanding result. Most users should have enough battery life for the whole day. Since the smartphone does not support the fast charging function, the duration of the replenishment of energy reserves is as much as 2 hours and 45 minutes. Thus, you need a little patience.

Only mediocre performance

The speed of response to commands and system performance are not so good. In particular, when scrolling, jerks and small lags constantly occur, especially if you use the pre-installed Chrome browser to quickly scroll up and down complex sites. At the same time, it is striking that the screen is not always accurate in its reaction to touch, a little lagging behind or moving too lazily.

When compared to the Galaxy S7, which is said to be in a different league, the difference becomes very noticeable. Despite the nativeness and subtlety of the Android operating system installed here, the drawbacks of the rather sluggish Snapdragon 430 processor draw attention to themselves. However, the Nokia 6 copes with the tasks encountered during normal daily use quite well.

Despite the "thinness" of the Android 7 operating system, there are noticeably faster models than the Nokia 6

Equipment with some disadvantages

Lovers of LTE speeds will not be completely satisfied either, since the Nokia 6 is capable of working with network data at a maximum speed not exceeding 150 Mbps. In addition, the Nokia 6 lacks an LED status indicator that could indicate the received notifications. There is no water protection here, no support for wireless charging. Data exchange with a PC is carried out via the classic micro-USB 2.0 interface.

But onboard there is a slot for memory cards of the micro-SD standard, with which you can expand the size of the built-in storage, which offers about 22 GB of free space for effective use by the user. An NFC module and an FM radio are also available. In addition, thanks to the fingerprint scanner, which is hidden in the "Home" button, the smartphone can be unlocked quickly and comfortably.

The Nokia 6 has a Micro-USB port at the bottom and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top.

Camera without Nokia-prestige

Nokia phones have had some really good camera quality in recent years. Obviously, HMD Global - the company behind the Nokia brand now - would like to continue this tradition. At least, this is what the recent cooperation agreement with Carl-Zeiss points to.

Nevertheless, Nokia 6 was developed without the use of Zeiss technologies, and therefore after our tests in the laboratory it receives only a satisfactory mark in the test discipline "Camera". The quality of photos taken with a 16MP camera in daylight is what we like above all for its precise sharpness. However, smartphone users often take pictures in less than optimal lighting conditions - and here the smartphone shows obvious disadvantages.

Images taken in twilight light appear to be blurry and very softened. Colors appear (even in daylight) somewhat washed out. In addition, in low light conditions, the camera tends to “recount” multiple objects and is annoying with erratic results. We also noticed the lack of optical image stabilization, although at this price point it would be more of a pleasant surprise.

Twilight shots (right) are less clear than daytime shots.

Android 7 with promised updates

Somewhat unexpected for us were the manufacturer's ambitious promises to provide Nokia 6 with regular updates for about two years. This is worthy of a separate mention in the review, as it may turn out to be quite a serious reason for buying the Nokia 6, and not an equivalent model with less good support: it turns out that Nokia will roll out the next two major Android updates (which appear once a year). Of course, if Google does not interfere with this with their hardware requirements. Promises to provide users with updates also apply to smartphones.

Much more important, in fact, are the security updates that Google submits twice a month. Nokia devices will also receive them regularly and on time - perhaps every month. Of course, we would like to hear such statements from other manufacturers about their new products.

In addition, Nokia uses the Android operating system, which is practically native and free from unnecessary software (in the understanding of Google). Whether or not HMD Global will follow this update policy (and for how long) will be revealed in the coming months.

Nokia 6 looks very high quality

Alternative: BQ Aquaris X

A good alternative, which costs less than 20,000 rubles, is from the Spanish manufacturer BQ. The device belongs to the number of smartphones with the best value for money, which can be seen in ours. Compared to the Nokia 6, it has a faster work pace, longer battery life and better equipment.

Positioning

Nokia's lineup is small, simple and logical. The lower the number, the cheaper the device. The higher, the more expensive and interesting the filling. Some models can be conditionally called paired, such are the Nokia 5 and 6, as they are close in cost. But if the first is a model with a 5.2-inch display, then the second offers a larger screen - 5.5 inches.

For Chinese manufacturers, which HMD Global is, despite all attempts to use the brand rented for 10 years and pretend to be a purebred Finn, the 5.5-inch segment is one of the most important. Here you can see a number of popular models, for example, from Xiaomi, Meizu, Huawei under the Honor brand. These are devices that offer an excellent price / quality ratio and thus outperform A-brands, for example, Samsung.

HMD Global's positioning is somewhat confused in relation to the market. In the eyes of the manufacturer, the Nokia brand is already a sufficient reason for a person to pay more for the device, the premium, depending on the model, ranges from 15 to 25%, this is a markup for the brand's popularity in the past. That is, the company does not rely on those characteristics that are accepted in the segment, which are offered by competitors. At HMD Global, they play the old game of trying to create a catchy look and save on components to achieve high profitability for themselves. For a newcomer to the market, this strategy is understandable, but for a consumer it means buying at full price devices with characteristics that are far from optimal. For example, in Nokia 6, the manufacturer saved on the chipset and installed Qualcomm Snapdragon 430, which can be safely called a place between the budget and mid-range segment. For example, in Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X there is a Snapdragon 625, which is a cut taller, it has better performance, less load on the battery.

In Russia, the sales of Nokia 6 have not become a noticeable phenomenon in their segment, this device is in moderate demand, this is a “difficult” position, it is difficult to sell it. There are too many competitors, too few advantages in terms of filling, but an interesting design.

Design, dimensions, controls

For the Nokia 6, HMD Global used a design that was popular a few years ago: a metal frame, where the side edges are straight, with notches on the edges to see the texture of the metal. There are several color options, but the glossy option is only available for the 4/64 GB model, which is called Arte Black. The device is not officially supplied to Russia, it is turned back towards you in the picture.

All other color options are very similar: dark matte body, bright metal marks on the side edge, black screen with 2.5D glass. It is up to you to decide which color to choose, but in life the difference is practically invisible, rather we are talking about shades than about bright, noticeable colors. Apparently, they tried to make the model universal.

The back panel of the device is made of metal, antenna inserts are visible. As for me, the device turned out to be heavy, although the weight is only 169 grams, which is typical for such models. The feeling of heaviness arises due to the fact that the body is rectangular, wide, bumping into the hand. We didn't think much about the ergonomics of the device, for example, the fingerprint sensor was moved to the bottom edge of the case, and you have to reach for it with your thumb. On the move, this is fraught with the fact that you can drop the device, balancing the case is simply inconvenient. Therefore, you should carefully press the sensor and hold the smartphone firmly. And it is important to say that I have big hands, but what about the owners of not such hands? The answer is obvious - be more careful with the device.

The dimensions of the smartphone are 154x75.8x7.85 mm, there is also a protruding bezel of the camera (8.4 mm), it does not interfere at all, in your pocket it does not touch for anything, even when you take out the device. But the width plus the shape of the body make the smartphone not very comfortable. Perhaps, for me, this is one of the biggest complaints about the model.

On the left side there is a slot for nanoSIM cards, it is combined (instead of the second card, you can install a microSD card). On the right side there is a paired volume rocker and an on / off button. On the top there is a 3.5 mm jack, on the bottom there is a microphone, a speaker, and a microUSB connector. Why did HMD decide not to put USB Type C in a fairly recent model? Saving on matches, they thought that such a connector would be quite appropriate in 2017. They are not alone in this, so it is not worth scolding the Chinese for this.

The LED indicator was removed from the device. It is surprising that it is present in the model for the Chinese market. What is the deeper meaning of such a change in the apparatus, I do not understand. Many people love such indicators, especially since in this device it would be appropriate in the absence of screen modes, when you can see missed notifications.

The smartphone does not have any protection against water, which is also typical for Chinese manufacturers and does not raise any questions. The touch keys on the sides of the fingerprint sensor are backlit and cannot be reassigned.

The device is well assembled, there are no complaints about it, but when it was created, no one thought about conducting any tests on how it would work in real life. For example, NFC was placed behind a metal plate, which led to the fact that with the Nokia 6 you have to dance with a tambourine in order to pay for something using Android Pay - freeze with the device at the terminal, touch it closely, which is inconvenient and annoying. This is a miscalculation of the Chinese who designed the device, they have little experience with NFC, and therefore such "childish" mistakes come out.

Display

The characteristics of the screen are as follows: 5.5 inches, IPS, 1920 x 1080 pixels, 403 ppi, brightness up to 450 nits, Corning Gorilla Glass. For some reason, in the automatic mode, the device was not added the ability to independently raise the brightness on the street, for this you need to climb into the menu and turn on the corresponding setting (it was added to the firmware obviously later, since the menu item was not even translated).

But if we talk about the properties of the screen, then it is not outstanding, on the street it will be blind even in the not very bright sun (just like in Nokia 5). Indoors, the brightness is sufficient, but the colors are not very expressive and vivid. A normal screen for everyday use, no pretense for anything like that. There are no additional screen settings for yourself and your ideas about beauty are not present - everything is very ascetic.

Battery

Built-in 3000mAh Li-Ion battery. Unfortunately, HMD Global does not even indicate the approximate operating modes and the expected time in each of them with a fully charged battery. Therefore, we can only focus on the results that we got in practice. So, at maximum brightness, playing an unconverted HD video in MX Player will give about 7 hours of work. For an IPS matrix, this is a good result, there are no records, but there are no failures either.

When using the device for calls for an hour, browsing the web, communicating in instant messengers and social networks, it lasts for one daylight. In this case, the screen backlight is set to 60%, with automatic backlight adjustment the operating time did not change much. The total operating time of the screen was about 2.5 hours, the amount of transferred data was about 400 MB.

The battery charging time with standard charging (fast is not supported, wireless is also not available) - about 3.5-4 hours. I could not figure out why there is a difference in charging time, but these half an hour, apparently, is due to the fact that the device can synchronize some data and therefore charges more slowly, since energy is consumed.

Thrifty users who use the device from time to time, do not actively use data transfer, can achieve work in 1.5-2 days, but better results are no longer possible. In standby mode (without a SIM card), with the data transmission disabled, the device loses its charge rather quickly, I accidentally drew attention to it. Therefore, it is better to turn it off if you are not using it.

In the gaming mode, the device is quickly discharged, it will last for 3.5-4 hours at most.

There are no special power saving settings, only the one that is standard in Android and can be activated when 15% of the charge is reached. In a word, this device is quite modern in this aspect.

Chipset, memory, memory cards, performance

Usually, Chinese companies offer a choice of built-in memory (both operational and conventional), but HMD Global for Russia presented one version of the device with 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of built-in plus 128 GB memory cards. For the average consumer, this is enough for the eyes.

The Snapdragon 430 chipset has 8 cores and pretty decent performance as seen in the synthetic benchmarks. I would like to see updated 400-series chipsets in this device, but it was designed for a long time, hence the choice of this solution. In synthetic tests, you can see the following results:

As for me, this device is not the fastest in its class, including in the interface, despite the fact that there are no shells here. Classmates from Huawei, Meizu, Xiaomi are faster, even if it is not critical, but the difference is still there.

Communication capabilities

A budget solution, and that says it all, there is no USB Type C (it is a penny more expensive), a regular microUSB, but it's good that they left OTG. There is no second band for Wi-Fi, which immediately makes you a hostage to a good Internet and absent neighbors transferring a lot of data over their Wi-Fi networks.

NFC is supported, including for Android Pay. It works badly, since the case shields the chip, I wrote about this above.

The device supports LTE Cat.4 and the following ranges: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 40. The implementation of frequency support is very frivolous, there is no aggregation, which is understandable, but there is also no reliable operation at the declared frequencies in other countries. For example, my Nokia 5 in the USA refused to work in the AT&T LTE network (although it regularly received SMS messages upon reboot, that is, it clung to the network and then fell off). For those who travel to other countries, this can become a serious pitfall; it is impossible to check the performance of the device in other countries in advance.

Cameras

The front camera is 8-megapixel and does not offer any special image quality, there is autofocus. For a device of this price, this is to be expected.

The interface of the main camera is simple, but it hides additional and interesting settings. For example, you can activate the "Retouch" mode (in fact, blurring the skin is the main application of this mode). You can turn on the electronic compass, then it will be displayed on the screen during shooting. There is also a lighting detection mode, when the exposure is processed automatically, it works plus or minus normally. You can customize watermarks, and then they will appear on each of your photos.

The main camera has a resolution of 16 megapixels (f / 2.0), it has a two-section flash and autofocus. The focusing time on the subject is insignificant, I can't say that the camera is fast, but it works out the scene in a reasonable time. HDR doesn't work very well; when the flash is on, it turns off automatically.

In several reviews of this device, it is praised for a very high-quality camera, it did not seem to me like that either in the first or second approximation. An ordinary camera for this kind of products, in the sun gives more or less digestible pictures, at night it shoots very badly. However, look at examples of photos and videos, evaluate the quality of the camera yourself.

Software

The model was released on Android 7.1.1, almost all interface elements are similar to those that we see in Android 7. I will not describe the standard Android functions, you can read about them in a detailed review.

The localization of the device is done well, but in some places where new functions have been added, there are scraps of English terms. For example, you can see the English menu item in the "Display" section. There are such flaws, but they do not spoil the impression of the device, it is clear what this or that item means.

Built-in FM radio is usually, there is nothing special here.

The multimedia capabilities of the device are modest, the headphones from the kit are of disgusting quality. It's a shame to put this in a box, it spoils the impression - it's better without headphones than with such China.

There is support for Dolby Atmos, you can turn it on in the Play Music settings.

There is no additional software as such, it is pure Android (moreover, Google actively supports Foxconn in this, and many updates arrive here first). All security updates arrive on time and quickly enough. Pure Android is not convenient in everything and not for everyone, but there is a small layer of those who consider it a plus.

Impressions

There are no complaints about the quality of the connection, the call is quite loud, you can skip vibrations. In Moscow and Russia, there are no problems with working in 4G, but in other countries the device does not see all LTE frequencies, although they are in it (the same problem is in Nokia 5). It works in 4G, albeit slowly.

The quality of voice transmission has nothing to do with the previous Nokia, although they tried to restore it in the Nokia 8 and installed several microphones and an advanced noise reduction system, but this simply does not exist here (the second microphone works only when recording video).

The price of Nokia 6 is 15,990 rubles (3/32 GB), which makes the device unbalanced, especially against the background of competitors.

Meizu M5 Note can serve as a direct competitor for Nokia 6, it also has a metal body, a fingerprint sensor on the front panel, a similar screen, but the processor is from MediaTek, which is rather an advantage here, as it is of a higher class. 4000 mAh battery, fast charging, cameras are comparable.

At a price of 14,990 rubles, it is also cheaper, which makes the device more interesting in the eyes of a potential buyer.

Quite interesting due to the dual camera Honor 6X, the model came out a long time ago, but is in demand, and the price is in the range of 12-15 thousand rubles, which is also cheaper than the offer from Nokia. It is possible that the aesthetics of this device is inferior to Nokia 6, but it is much more comfortable in the hands, and other characteristics are better as well.

I will not talk about Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X, this is an outgoing model, but it is also in high demand. And among the listed ones, I mentioned only the notable devices, this is the tip of the iceberg. There are dozens of real rivals to Nokia 6, and the device from HMD does not look the best against their background - it is expensive, has no distinctive features in the filling, and is somewhat boring. Slow camera, lack of fast charging, not to mention wireless, and many other "little things" make us think that the real price of the device is overstated by at least 20%.

A couple of weeks ago in China, which became the first modern mobile device under this brand, running on the Android operating system. The demand for the new product turned out that even now, almost a month after the start of sales, it is incredibly difficult to find this device on sale.

The first thing that catches your eye is a large colorful packaging in the best traditions of Nokia. It's nice that twenty-year-old traditions are maintained even now, even in spite of such a difficult time for the Finnish brand. Inside the package, you can find a special clip for opening the SIM card tray, a proprietary microUSB cable, inexpensive headphones, a power adapter designed to charge the Nokia 6 from the mains, the smartphone itself, and several paper instructions in Chinese.

Let's go over the technical specifications of the Nokia 6. The device is equipped with a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1080 by 1920 pixels (FullHD), an eight-core Snapdragon 430 processor with a clock speed of 1.4 GHz, an Adreno 505 graphics accelerator, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB flash drive, 3000 mAh battery, 16 megapixel main camera with dual LED flash, 8 megapixel front camera with 1080p video recording, dual SIM slot, LTE 4G modem, and A-GPS and GLONASS.

The Nokia 6 smartphone has an all-metal black casing. Thanks to the incredibly high-quality and reliable assembly, the mobile device does not creak or backlash in any way, as was often the case with phones under this brand. Affects the solidity of the entire structure.

The rear camera with LED flash protrudes slightly from the body, but only by 1mm. This has no effect on practical use. Thanks to the rounded edges of the case, the Nokia 6 smartphone fits perfectly in the hand. The back cover has a slightly rough texture, which does not show up fingerprints so quickly, and it also prevents the device from sliding in your hands.

On the bottom of the case there is a microUSB port for charging a smartphone, as well as a speaker. Most likely, Nokia engineers decided not to take risks once again, installing a new USB Type-C, limiting themselves to an earlier generation standard. This decision can be called reasonable, because all modern people have a huge amount of peripherals for microUSB, which are incompatible with USB Type-C without a special adapter, which is not the most compact in size.

On the front, there is a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass with a side rounding using 2.5D technology. Yes, yes, because of it, sticking a protective film or glass on the entire screen will not work, but the companies that make modern smartphones are not at all interested in this. They are willing to sacrifice practicality for a more modern look. Right under the screen there are three touch buttons, two of which are side and backlit, and the main one stands out stylishly against the background of all the glass.

To sum up the body, we can say that the build quality of the Nokia 6 is at an incredibly high level. Not all smartphones with a price tag of 15,000 rubles can boast of such solidity and stylish appearance. It is also pleasing that the Nokia logo was not "molded" on the front of the device, as Samsung loves to do.

When you turn on the Nokia 6, the screen immediately displays the animation familiar to users of mobile devices under this brand, accompanied by a pleasant sound effect. Nokia fans will love it! Then the process of initial setup, familiar to all Android devices, begins. Unfortunately, since all modifications of Nokia 6 are intended for sale exclusively in China, there is no Russian language in this mobile device yet. In the future, most likely, enthusiasts will release their own firmware with support for all languages of the world, but this will happen only after a while, so Nokia 6 had to be tested in English.

The entire Nokia branded shell on a smartphone running Android 7.0 Nougat has a blue theme. All standard applications already preinstalled on a mobile device are made in the same style. There is no point in talking about the functions of the Android operating system that are already familiar to all, so let's move on to more interesting facts about the Nokia 6.

Having used Nokia's proprietary shell for some time, an irresistible desire arose to replace it with something else. Yes, it works stably and fast enough, but its appearance does not give a pleasant impression. Everything looks somehow too boring and gloomy, as if Nokia had saved on the design staff. Such a shell could be put on some Chinese smartphone for $ 100, but it is incredibly far from the Nokia brand. Of course, the device is intended for residents of China, but do people there have other taste preferences?

Since the screen is built on the basis of an IPS LCD matrix, the viewing angles of the Nokia 6 are incredibly high. At maximum screen brightness, the image is clearly visible from any angle, and the loss in color is extremely small. It is also worth noting that when bright light sources shine on the screen, the screen copes well with glare, while leaving the information readable. It would probably be reasonable to say that the screen in the Nokia 6 is similar to that of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in terms of color rendition and contrast, but it still falls short of the flagship iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in color depth.

The sound volume is roughly on par with all other smartphones, however, when directly comparing with the iPhone 6s Plus, you notice that the sound on the Nokia 6 is less saturated and clear, but it is almost impossible to notice the difference in the sound of the speakers at maximum volume without direct comparison.

The most interesting thing, of course, is to learn about both cameras of the Nokia 6 smartphone, which seem to have a high resolution. Yes, they are really capable of taking good photos and recording good videos, but the same Xiaomi Mi5, which today costs even less, is far from this smartphone.

The Chinese Xiaomi Mi5 has much better color reproduction and image clarity in the front and rear cameras, but Nokia surpasses it in autofocus speed. It will be fair and honest to say that the front and rear cameras in the Nokia 6 are on a par with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, so we would not expect anything extraordinary from them. The Nokia 6 smartphone is definitely not a camera phone, so it will definitely not be suitable for those who like high-quality photos and clear selfies.

An elongated fingerprint scanner is built into the touch button "Home". It works, but not as well as we would like. Yes, in most cases, it copes with its task, but its speed of work leaves much to be desired. If the hands of the surveillance are wet, then in 30% of cases the fingerprint recognition will be incorrect. It really pisses me off ...

We will not say anything about autonomy without practical tests. During the testing of the device, about 3 hours, the device was discharged from 100% to 38%. This is not a bad result, especially considering that Nokia 6 was practically never let go of our hands all this time, testing its software and enjoying a really attractive appearance.

Output

The Nokia 6 smartphone is the first mobile device from this manufacturer to run the Android operating system. The device has an incredibly good and high-quality build, but its internal components do not arouse the required level of admiration.

The software in the face of the Nokia shell for Android is clearly badly underdeveloped, since it has extremely poor functionality and a primitive appearance. The technical equipment of the Nokia 6, unfortunately, also greatly disappointed. In addition to 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of built-in flash memory, this mobile device has nothing to brag about, since manufacturers offer devices much more powerful for much more affordable money.

The Nokia 6 smartphone is sold in China for about $ 250 (14,500 rubles), but the same Xiaomi Mi5 can be bought in Russia for exactly the same amount of money. The camera of Nokia 6 is on par with the iPhone 5s, although the Apple product has 8 megapixel main and 1.2 megapixel front cameras. All these numbers in Nokia 6 only attract the attention of buyers, but there is nothing behind them.

As a result, the first Nokia-branded mobile device based on the Android Nougat operating system proved to be controversial. The company has proven itself capable of delivering high build quality, but the hardware and software have clearly failed. In our opinion, the cost of a Nokia 6 smartphone should be $ 150, that is, about 9,000 rubles. If Nokia 6 cost that much, then it could be forgiven for all the shortcomings that it has.

We would not recommend buying a Nokia 6, since it doesn’t even have Russian for $ 250, which again causes enormous inconveniences. In fact, this smartphone can only be bought by those who want to overpay for the Nokia brand, or those who are extremely poorly versed in mobile devices and trust the words of well-known corporations.

Buy Nokia 6 at a low price you can.

Now everyone has the option of the next generation Xiaomi Mi Band 5.
