What certification does the xperia xz premium smartphone have? Sony Xperia XZ Premium camera review. Sony Xperia XZ Premium review: software features

Sony Xperia XZ Premium review - the first among the best in the 2017 flagship smartphone list. The device turned out to be not just a technological product, no, everything is much deeper here. Here is sonistyle.

Design, ergonomics

The Xperia XZ Premium is an insanely beautiful and strange smartphone at the same time. The Japanese went here contrary to market trends and the aspirations of ordinary people who dream of curved screens for the entire front panel, but cheaper.

At the heart of the Xperia XZ Premium is the Glass Loop Surface design concept that continues the ideas of past flagships. Closed surfaces and shapes reign here, everything symbolizes a rectangle without edges, this can be seen everywhere - in the design of the ends, USB Type-C and even the sensor unit near the camera.

Sony's designers were able to do the incredible - to show that the "old-fashioned" smartphone is able to attract the eye worse than the newfangled curved screens. I haven’t held such an original and harmonious smartphone in my hands for a long time. It's nice to see that not all companies are blindly following trends.

In essence, this is a monoblock, consisting of two Gorilla Glass 5 glasses and a plastic frame with metal bottom and top ends. Sony could not or did not want to make the entire frame aluminum (apparently, for good reception of the cellular signal), but they did not spare the metal on the bottom and top edges. There is a lot of it there.

An option in color came to my review Luminous chrome, which, in my opinion, is the most successful and striking. Perfect for both guys and girls.

Now let's quickly go over the buttons. Sony Mobile engineers are conservative in this regard, but there are significant changes here as well.

On the right side are all the controls, including the power button with a fingerprint scanner, as well as the camera shutter button. Special thanks for her, in many scenarios pressing this button is faster and more convenient than tapping on the screen.

Also pleasing is the new location of the volume rocker. It was moved above the power button, which immediately improved usability. Most users of the Xperia XZ and older Sony Xperia flagships were unhappy that the volume was tucked between the power button and the camera button. The Xperia XZ Premium finally listens to user demands.

Protective glasses Xperia XZ Premium have a 2.5D effect, it is especially pronounced on the side edges. For some reason, many people believe that Gorilla Glass 5 does not scratch or that this version of glass scratches much less than previous versions, but this is not so. In everyday use without a case, scratches are inevitable. Consider this point.

The convenience of use

As much as I admire the distinctive design of the Xperia XZ Premium, it's stupid to deny that this smartphone has ergonomics problems.

Not even that, this smartphone lacks ergonomics. It simply does not exist, it is an angular, glossy bar with a 5.5-inch screen, which is larger in size than my Huawei Mate 9 ().

It is necessary to hold the Xperia XZ Premium in your hands carefully, it does not forgive mistakes with a wrong grip. Slippery type. 😉

But the fingerprint sensor in the Xperia XZ Premium is faster and, most importantly, more accurate than the Xperia XZ. But it is still far from the lightning-fast sensor Huawei P10 Plus () or Mate 9. Pressing the button itself has become more firm and clear.

The smartphone has full IP68 waterproof rating. You can't swim with your smartphone, but it can handle water photography, showering, and situations like the ones shown here.

Vibration feedback indirectly affects the usability. The Xperia XZ Premium has a high-quality vibration motor, quiet and pleasant. In Android smartphones, this is very rare, usually they insert a loud and disgusting rattling vibration. Everything is super here, I saw something similar on the Galaxy S8.

Screen

The Xperia XZ Premium screen is what Sony Mobile is proud of. Indeed, the display on the Xperia flagship is excellent without any reservations.

We've seen true 4K resolution at five and a half inches before on the Xperia Z5 Premium. But the Xperia XZ Premium's screen generates a cooler picture with HDR support and higher overall quality.

This is the best TFT screen I've seen in smartphones. Excellent contrast and bright, insanely clear. And Sony developers have finally added support for the professional mode (sRGB) in the display settings. If you activate it, the picture will become less juicy, but much more realistic.

The glass in front of the screen is covered with an effective oleophobic coating (this also applies to the back panel). It is easy to wipe off fingerprints and other dirt, just swipe it a couple of times on the T-shirt (tell us in the comments how you remove marks from the screen).

Of the features, I note that 4K resolution is affected only when viewing photos and videos, as well as the camera. On the desktop and in normal applications, the screen switches to FHD resolution. Reasonable saving of resources, because you can notice the difference between 4K and FHD only when viewing and processing photos in the gallery.

All in all, the Xperia XZ Premium's screen is impressive in its quality. It makes no sense to look for any flaws here, such as highlights or viewing angles. Highest level.

Camera

Especially before the main review, I wrote a detailed review of the Xperia XZ Premium camera, so as not to inflate the amount of this material to indecent.

For those for whom the camera in a smartphone is more important than anything else, I highly recommend following the link:

There you will find a full breakdown of the Xperia XZ Premium camera with a bunch of examples of photo videos.

On my own, I will note a couple of nuances that prevented me from giving the Xperia XZ Premium the maximum score. It's an outdated, awkward camera app and wide-angle optics.

It seems to me that if a smartphone has a single main camera, then the focal length of 26-28 mm is much more suitable for it than the 24 mm, like in the Xperia XZ Premium.

Software

The Xperia XZ Premium runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat with the proprietary Xperia UI skin.

Sony has been on the path of a naked android based on AOSP for quite some time and with each new flagship they are getting closer to the Google Pixel. For example, on the far right desktop of Xperia smartphones, not some clumsy aggregator or voice "assistant" (hello, Bixby), but the faithful Google Now.

The one thing Sony hasn't overcome yet is the old-fashioned icons, which, although for the most part, have led to a common denominator, they still lack freshness.

But the Xperia XZ Premium is already delivering a Google-like user experience with Sony firmware and security updates faster than most third-party vendors. And this trend will continue in the future.

The rest of the features of the Xperia UI shell can be seen in this review:

Performance and runtime

The Xperia XZ Premium is the first smartphone on the market to feature the Snapdragon 835 chipset. And although the Xiaomi Mi6 with a similar chipset started selling much earlier, Sony still has merit here.

The Japanese company was able to knock out the Snapdragon 835 for its flagship back in the winter, in the midst of the excitement of demand, when analysts seemed to insist that Samsung would take all the processors for its Galaxy S8 (Exynos for Europe and the CIS, and Snapdragon 835 for the United States). For example, LG with its LG G6 had to be content with last year's Snapdragon 821.

But most importantly, Sony was able not only to snatch the Snapdragon 835 for the Xperia XZ Premium, but also to intelligently optimize it to fit their needs.

The Xperia XZ Premium is lightning fast, jokingly coping with all the daily tasks. During use, I had the feeling that the smartphone was working almost half-heartedly, as if it had nowhere to put such computing power.

There are also no problems in games. In tanks, stable 60 frames, and less demanding games start almost instantly.

Injustice 2 runs smoothly on the Xperia XZ Premium.

Benchmark results:

The Xperia XZ Premium also comes with a UFS 2.1 drive. In AndroBench, the phone gives out 710-720 Mb / s for reading and 200-210 Mb / s for writing. Surely this is the key to the speed of downloading applications and games.

Sony Mobile engineers have overcome a longstanding problem with their smartphones - overheating. I managed to heat it to a more or less high temperature only after three consecutive runs in AnTuTu. By the way, the number of points decreased slightly, which also speaks of effective cooling and the absence of throttling.

In StabilityTest, after a 20 minute run, the smartphone warmed up to 40 degrees (battery), and the processor to 53 degrees.

Working hours

The Xperia XZ Premium is equipped with a relatively small 3200mAh battery. But the Snapdragon 835, the efforts of Sony Mobile and Stamina engineers work wonders.

The smartphone easily lives for 1.5 days and with 5.5 hours of screen operation in my usual use case (a lot of visual content, video, constant synchronization, all social networks and instant messengers, few calls). The Xperia XZ Premium is definitely one of the longest-lived smartphones with such battery capacity and screen size.

This good picture is overshadowed only by the lack of fast charging in the kit, although there is support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. Saving in such trifles seems ridiculous, because this is the ultimate flagship, and not some kind of average.

But thanks to Qnovo technology, which optimizes smartphone charging, the battery in the Xperia XZ Premium will last significantly longer and retain its capacity better.

Communication and sound

There are no complaints about the speech quality of hearing speakers and microphones. The Xperia XZ Premium has high-quality components, which becomes clear after the first conversation. Cellular reception is stable, which is not surprising for a glass phone.

The eternal problem of all Sony Xperia flagships - stereo speakers, which play quieter than competitors and often not so well, have bypassed the Xperia XZ Premium. The speakers are moderately loud and of very high quality. I have not heard such a sound from a phone for a long time, only the Huawei P10 Plus can compare in the sound quality of the speakers. There, too, the sound was not too loud, but super clean, without wheezing and distortion at maximum volume.

The headphone sound is good, but not the best in class. If we are talking about listening to music with wired headphones, then any smartphone with a high-quality DAC will easily give the Xperia XZ Premium a head start. The same LG G6 or beat the flagship Sony Xperia. However, if we talk about listening to music through wireless headphones, then the Xperia XZ Premium (like other Xperia flagships) is king here.

And all because of the proprietary LDAC codec, which significantly improves the sound quality when using the corresponding Sony wireless headphones. Take Sony, for example.

Competitors

Flagships buy with their hearts rather than their minds. After all, it is stupid to compare top-end smartphones as well as devices for 20k, comparing maniacally all sorts of characteristics and a bunch of other factors.

The Xperia XZ Premium is the most technologically advanced smartphone ever. Here is an innovative camera, very-very screen and top-end filling. But the flagships of competitors can also lay out a number of trump cards. For example, the LG G6, which does not have top-end specifications, has a super-wide-angle camera and the highest quality headphone sound among competitors. And HTC U11 has the coolest camera when it comes to image quality. And so it can be said about any premium smartphone of the A-brand.

Anyone from the list below can be an alternative to the Xperia XZ Preium. Or maybe not.

  • Galaxy S8
  • Lg g6
  • Oneplus 5
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • HTC U11
  • Huawei P10 Plus

Conclusion

The Xperia XZ Premium does not want to be taken apart and savor all its advantages or disadvantages. You want to use this device, turn it in your hands, look at it, catch glare and just admire its design.

This is a special feeling when an ordinary thing in the modern world like a smartphone gives such emotions. This is a real sonistyle and thanks to Sony that they continue to boldly go their own way, ignoring the clones of the iPhone and the vulgar Samsung.

I could find fault with its bulky body and camera, for which I have questions, but I will not. It doesn't make sense when you see such a distinctive and unique smartphone. The Xperia XZ Premium is the king of smartphones in 2017, and kings are not judged.

We are already used to loud autumn announcements of flagship models from well-known brands. However, Sony unveiled its top-of-the-line 2017 smartphone in the summer, in June. Powerful hardware, rich photo and audio capabilities, impressive appearance. And, perhaps, this is the only smartphone that can stand firmly on a flat surface! But his exclusive abilities, fortunately, are not limited to this.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium review. Mirror response to the world of flagships

Dimensions are 156x77 mm. Thickness - 7.9 mm. Weight - 191 g.

The smartphone is presented in three colors. It is a shiny chrome, deep black and pink bronze. And if often such pretentious names have nothing to do with reality and solve purely marketing problems, in the case of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, one can say for sure that such a loud name about chrome is true. It is simply impossible to describe the color of the device in another way! The backrest resembles a sparkling mirror with metal sanding inserts at the top and bottom. On the sides - rounded shiny ends in the color of the back and frontal part. But they are made of plastic, although this is not noticeable. In fact, thanks to this solution, the engineers managed to place several antenna modules, which had a very positive effect on the quality of reception and transmission of information and voice. Note that the front and back panels are covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

The front is almost symmetrical. The speaker grilles are located on the top and bottom of the frame. Above, however, there is still a front camera, proximity and lighting sensors, as well as a logo. On the side is a small LED displaying various states (charging, low battery level, messages from mail and instant messengers). There are no touch keys, only on-screen ones. The bezels around the edges of the screen are noticeable, a few millimeters. But to be honest, we do not really understand all this hysteria around frameless phones. Often, the lack of frames leads to compromises and trivial inconvenience when using the device. And externally - Xperia XZ Premium will give odds to many new flagships.

As we said, the speakers are located at the top and bottom of the screen. Therefore, when watching videos in landscape orientation, we get full stereo sound. At the same time, quite loud and high quality!

The back is a clear mirror with the XPERIA logo and the NFC mark of the module in the middle. In the upper left corner is the camera window, framed by a metal circle, and next to it is the autofocus and flash module.

At the bottom there is a microphone hole and a USB Type-C connector for charging and connecting to a computer.

Above - a jack for a standard 3.5 mm stereo headset and an auxiliary microphone.

On the left side there is a hybrid tray for nano SIM-cards. The cover can be removed by simply prying it off with your fingernail. The insert houses a slot for a second SIM-card or memory card - at the user's choice. And under the cover there is another slot with a plastic tray, into which the main SIM card is supposed to be installed - according to the "set and forget" principle. Note that removing the tray will inevitably reboot the device.

Recently, the signature "chip" of Xperia flagships has become a characteristic memorable on / off button on the side. Actually, the XZ Premium does not deviate from tradition. In this case, it is oblong, rough, slightly recessed relative to the end surface. It is impossible to miss! A fingerprint sensor is inscribed in it. Recognition is fast and virtually error-free. Also, on the right side there is a volume rocker (above the main key, unlike the XZs) and a separate button for taking photos. It can be used to start the camera and release the shutter.

It is obvious that such a brilliant solution has a dramatic effect on the appearance of the device. It turns out that fingerprints and palm prints are constantly left on the mirror back of the smartphone and around the screen. But on the other hand, the body can be easily wiped off with any soft cloth.

Another problem is that the smartphone is very slippery. But to hide such technocratic beauty in a case is an aesthetic crime. So you just have to be more careful.

But we can definitely say that this is a unique smartphone in terms of design, and definitely does not look like a host of its Android counterparts. There are also no questions about the build quality and ease of use.

Traditionally, Sony flagships have always been water-resistant (in this case, IP65 / 68). That is, you can calmly talk under the pouring rain or even immerse the device in fresh water to a depth of no more than one and a half meters. However, meeting with morning coffee or sea water is obviously contraindicated for the device.

Screen Sony Xperia XZ Premium - 5.5 inches, to match the flagship status has a resolution of 4K (3840x2160 pixels) with support for HDR technology. This is a TRILUMINOS / X-Reality display with improved dynamic range and the most accurate color reproduction. Similar technologies are used in SONY TVs and tablets. But in fact, the maximum resolution is used only when playing the corresponding video content. The interface, games and most applications are rendered in Full-HD (1920x1080). Obviously, this is done to save processor power, and therefore has a positive effect on the operating time.

Matrix - IPS, which in the case of the company's screens, guarantees excellent color reproduction and maximum viewing angles. Our own impression is also very positive. The picture is bright and colorful. You can adjust the white balance and change color schemes.

Recognized up to 10 simultaneous clicks.

The smartphone is built on the top-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. The graphics chip is Adreno 540. The amount of RAM is 4 GB.

Powered by Google Android 7.1. As usual for Sony, the device is preinstalled with proprietary programs and utilities: "Album", "Player", a utility for pairing with the PlayStation 4. It is also possible to change the interface themes.

The built-in storage is 64 GB, but if you donate a second SIM card, the memory can be expanded by 256 GB using a micro-SD card.

The main camera, Motion Eye, has a resolution of 19 megapixels. It can be activated by double pressing the power button, as well as by long pressing the separate shutter button. Lens - 25mm equivalent with f / 2.0 aperture. Three photosensors are involved in the formation of the picture together with the BIONZ processor. A special distortion-compensated shutter technology avoids annoying artifacts when shooting action scenes.

The camera has a predictive shooting mode, that is, it saves a series of frames even before you shoot. Then you can choose the best one from several options.

The camera interface is pretty straightforward. There are four items: "Super automatic", "Manual", "Video" and "Special modes", which are switched by swipes across the screen. In super-automatic mode, the camera decides for itself which scenario ("night", "landscape", "sports") to use when shooting. More often than not, the "simple" mode is sufficient for most situations. In low light conditions or for certain creative tasks, you can switch to manual mode. In general, we were more than satisfied with the results of the shooting. Sometimes the camera overexposed the frame a little, and sometimes “stretched” images that could not “digest” the photo solutions of the flagship competitors. The forums claim that a completely new module was used, and the software is still being improved, and the results will be available with a system update.

In special modes, such opportunities as shooting a photo panorama, a frame with an audio fragment, artistic filters and shooting 4K video are hidden. There is also a traditional fun from Sony - augmented reality, when three-dimensional shapes and interactive masks are superimposed on the subject.

Supports 4K recording at 30 fps. It is important to note that this is not just a camera setting, but a separate item in the list of special modes. Five-axis SteadyShot technology can be activated when shooting video.

The fastest video recording at the moment is positioned as an important advantage of the Xperia XZ Premium. When recording a video, you can press a dedicated on-screen button and a 0.18 second clip will be recorded at 960 frames per second. A soaring hummingbird turns into a sluggish pigeon, we do not recommend taking pictures of turtles - a pure translation of memory. The next slow motion clip can be shot in a couple of seconds. Another important point - you need to guess very accurately when to activate this "magic" mode. If you miss, the whole creative idea is down the drain. If you are in time, you have 6 seconds of exclusive video material that will be the envy of the authors of Hollywood effects!

960 fps

Front camera - 13 megapixels. It has a fairly wide angle, 22 mm EGF. Accommodates not only the author of a selfie, but also a large company.

Like any flagship, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium has all the necessary wireless interfaces. It is Wi-Fi with support for ac band, NFC, Bluetooth version 5.0, GPS and GLONASS.

As you know, Sony is famous not only for cameras, but also for its attentive attitude to sound.

High-definition audio (read 24-bit audio) is supported, all the most fashionable codecs, including FLAC, LPCM, DSD and ALAC. The sound path in the headphones with a wired connection is distinguished by very good detail, without the fashionable excessive emphasis on low frequencies.

For wireless connection, we used Creative WP-380. The presence of NFC came in handy here: we leaned the earpiece against the back of the device and XZ Premium "recognized" the headset. Pairing happened without any problems. We also got a very high quality, pleasant and readable sound.

Battery capacity - 3230 mAh. Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging mode is supported. If necessary, you can activate the "Smart Stamina" mode, which will allow you to "hold out" to the nearest stationary charge. There is a special option that analyzes the load on the battery and optimizes the charging process. As a result, battery life is increased.

As for the operating time, one charge was enough for a working day in a fairly active mode of operation, with the launch of synthetic tests and frequent shooting.

With average loads, the device can last even more than a day. True, playing streaming 4K content "eats away" about 20% of the charge in just one hour. Overall, these are good flagship performance.

The official price is 54,990. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium smartphone is an unambiguously exclusive offer in terms of looks and top features, as well as interesting multimedia and creative possibilities.

Sony's summer flagship and one of the most exciting smartphones on the market. My opinion has not changed since MWC, this is a convenient classic device with its own chips, it is able to please both Sony fans and all gadget lovers in general ...

By the way, AHO is disabled in the base player settings, which is good. All other parameters are also configurable.

It should be noted that the device supports the VoLTE function, this is a 4G voice transmission in the MegaFon network, you can learn more about it. Here is the official information:

“HD Voice over 4G (VoLTE) service transmits voice calls over LTE network. During the call, the subscriber remains connected to the 4G network, which ensures multitasking: you no longer have to stop data transfer during voice calls. You can talk on the phone, browse the web, and use your mobile phone as a hotspot for other devices to access the mobile network at the same time.

Additional benefits:

  • Better voice quality compared to regular voice calls, especially if both parties are using VoLTE.
  • Higher connection speed. If both devices support VoLTE and are on the LTE network during the call, the connection is established in about a second. "

To connect, you need to have one of the X series smartphones (X, XZ, X Performance), go to the MegaFon office and do everything as it should. The function is good, the quality of voice transmission, the connection speed are very pleasing - the experience is like a child's, or when LTE first appeared and we learned to do without Wi-Fi in the city.

Design, construction

Yes, as for me, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium is one of the most beautiful smartphones on the market. There is no limitless design, metal, but there is its own charm when you pick up a heavy gadget from the table - there are no accidental clicks on the side edges, there are no accidental clicks on the button of the voice assistant, and in general, it is very difficult to accidentally press something here. It is likely that this is the last classic flagship smartphone Xperia - it could be that the IFA will show a new design code. But the old one, believe me, is very good and will delight you, I look at the XZ Premium not only as a journalist, but also as a Sony fan - the device will delight all fans and connoisseurs. In addition, there are indeed many interesting findings in the design. Metal parts on the top and bottom and glass panels on the front and back to remove the slot for the memory card and SIM card, you do not need a tool, each hole on the case follows the shape of the ends. The power button with a built-in fingerprint sensor is convenient, the sensor itself works instantly, it is difficult to make a mistake when pressing. Below is a USB-C connector for charging and data transfer, for MacBook owners this is a godsend, pulled out the cable from the laptop and recharged the device. Although USB-C has quickly become commonplace - besides a laptop, there is also a Nintendo Switch, so the box's power supply is perfect for charging a smartphone. The camera button helps you quickly start shooting, from the moment you press it to start it takes about a second, the volume buttons help to enlarge the picture, this is the default setting, you can assign them to shooting.

On the top there is a 3.5 mm jack, the jack is traditional for flagship Xperia devices - an additional contact allows you to transfer power to a proprietary microphone and a noise-canceling headset. By the way, the microphone is very good for recording podcasts.

Don't forget about these accessories, the stereo microphone is called STM10, the headset is MDR-NC31EM - although there are other options, such as the Sony h.ear in NC.

It's easy to take care of the device, as long as my fingerprints come off instantly, it seems that there is an oleophobic coating on the back. The fingerprint sensor works quickly, in a few minutes I added all the necessary cards to Android Pay, inserted two SIM cards and thus prepared for life. A small indicator light on the top left tells that XZ Premium has received some kind of message, everything is perfectly visible on the big screen from any angle, branded themes are very suitable for the design, I have not changed the basic Xperia Loops either. Although periodically there are notifications that new themes are available for installation.

Note that the memory card and SIM cards must be inserted carefully, this is how the slot is arranged.

Display

To begin with, I will repeat my thoughts from the first glance, there is no change here. Sony had such an interesting Z5 Premium, it differed from the simple Z5 in the display resolution (5.5-inch 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) display, 806 PPI), and a different design. Experiments with 4K resolution in smartphones did not end there, XZ Premium continues the glorious work of Premium, only here now, in addition to 4K resolution, HDR is also used. If you ask what will be better, I will answer that the colors will be better in some cases. But, given the 5.5-inch display diagonal, the difference with the "regular" display in the same iPhone 7 Plus will be hard to notice. In addition, there is not yet much 4K content in streaming services, you can try Amazon, but for Russia this is still exotic. You will not be able to watch 4K HDR videos on YouTube on a mobile device. But it is indicated that the PlayStation Video will play just in the correct resolution. I have a sign here, where it is indicated when the device will produce upscale up to 4K, and when it will use this resolution, here is a little more detail:

  • Album, 4K playback is supported, if the resolution of the uploaded content is lower, then upscale occurs.
  • The same scheme for downloaded applications.
  • Video playback applications support 4K, if the resolution is lower, upscale again. And this also applies to the preinstalled program and other utilities.
  • 4K support is announced from YouTube.

Again, the main limitation is the size of the display, and in everyday life on a TV with a small diagonal it is sometimes difficult to distinguish 4K-HDR from FHD, here is a 5.5-inch diagonal.

It is also possible to understand the logic of those responsible for Sony XZ Premium, they tried to put everything in the device so that the consumer would not have questions about the price. So, 4K HDR also has an image purpose, in addition to pleasing our eyes.

As for the use in real life - the screen is like a screen, the brightness is sufficient, good viewing angles, good colors, but it all depends on the content. Adjusting the white balance makes it easy to add comfort when reading at night, or to bring all the sliders to zero. Watching TV shows is quite possible and necessary. What I didn't like was the plate with buttons at the bottom. It takes up a lot of space, it cannot be hidden, even if it is visible only in some cases, but sometimes it annoys: you open Chrome - there is a black strip below. The same is in other programs, for example, in Telegram. Perhaps, with the updates, they will teach her to hide, but for now this is how it is - although, communicating with two owners of the device, I did not meet any negativity about the die, I am the only one.

The review contains photographs of the device taken in the sun - the information is visible, in theory it can even be read on the beach.

Camera

The new camera module found in the Sony Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XZs is called Motion Eye, a name to remember in the Sony family. During 2017, the module will be used only in the company's smartphones, apparently, this will become a kind of check, error detection, potential test. Then the module will be sold to Apple, Samsung and other companies. Here some may say: "And Apple will finish it as expected." My answer is that Sony smartphones with Motion Eye will be capable of a lot, from shooting 4K video (hurray) to Super Slo-mo. But first, a little about the module itself. The characteristics were named as follows: 19 megapixel, matrix size 1 / 2.3 ", the lens consists of six elements. The fundamental difference between Motion Eye is the presence of its own memory, which allows you to make various kunstyuk with the image, and this applies to both photos and videos. For example, if you see something interesting, take your smartphone out of your pocket, point it, and it takes three pictures by itself, detecting a moving object in the frame. And by the time you press the button, this will be the fourth frame. Then you will be asked to choose the best photo, the rest If we talk about dreams, imagine if you take out a device in a store and point it to a wine label, Vivino will open on its own, where the camera will be immediately activated. This option may appear in the future! Speaking of reality, on vacation , if you are lying on the beach and raise the camera, focusing will be instantly carried out and several shots will be taken. are fought, are given to the user. It is curious that the presence of its own memory allows not to "load" the CPU, this has a positive effect on power consumption and the work of other applications. And it is already there.

If predictive shooting sounds boring to you, how about Super slow motion, 960fps? And in HD too? Not bad? I'll tell you, it's still more interesting, let's say you start shooting a regular video, if there is some kind of dynamic scene, you press a button, Super Slo-mo happens for six seconds, then you can continue to record a regular video. This is good for sports, some kind of sketches in the city, recreation, concerts and so on, hundreds of scenarios can be thought up. I managed to watch the videos filmed on XZ Premium, impressive! Something like this - and you can do such videos yourself on your smartphone.

Or like this.

Examples were shot on Sony FS700, there was such a professional camera four years ago. In general, you can see how "pro" goes to the people, this applies to 4K, and slo-mo, and a number of other features.

As I said, recording slow-motion video and shooting objects without hands is just the beginning, in those companies to whom Sony will sell the module, they may well come up with hundreds of other ways to use memory. Sony also promises to come up with a lot of interesting things. The possibilities and potential of Motion Eye are great. Well, for older smartphones Sony Motion Eye is also good because it allows you to shoot video with 4K resolution, promises excellent image quality in different conditions, it uses the same multifaceted focusing system as in the Sony Xperia XZ. Please note that the camera resolution is 19 megapixels, you can select 17 megapixel mode in the settings with an aspect ratio of 16: 9.

Some real camera experiences. Slow motion videos look great on a smartphone screen, but it's better not to open them in full laptop screen. 4K video recording is activated as a standalone camera app, look for the icon next to AR effects. Video writes well, stabilization works, if you use a tripod, you can get good videos - I remind you about a stereo microphone. As for the photos, here in the daytime, in good lighting, we get normal shots - I don't quite understand the critics of the camera. Pointing - taking off - filters - instagram, and it turns out well. I went through several hundred pictures in a couple of months, there is little marriage, plus the sensations from the camera will very much depend on the application that you use. Ultimately, all of the features above are fine to use from time to time, but more often you will turn on the camera once or twice a day. And here you will be helped by launching with a separate button, quick activation, quick saving of the frame. Well, if you want a masterpiece - take a tripod, delve into the settings, install different applications, create masterpieces. It's like with music - all improvements depend only on you.

Sample photos

Still, I'll tell you a little more about slow motion - it happens like this: you shoot a regular video, press a button, slow motion starts, lasts a few seconds, HD quality, speed 960 frames / sec. Then the resulting video is saved as a regular file, you can immediately upload it somewhere in social networks or send it to your comrades.

Music

Here I want to say that in addition to the LDAC codec typical for Xperia flagships, built-in "enhancers" and active noise cancellation with special headphones, the new AHO function is supported. It stands for Automatic Headset Optimization, a smartphone can determine which headphones are connected and adjust the sound for them. How it is done, what is configured - there is no exact answer yet, I will try to get it. People in the company say the feature actually works.

About noise cancellation and other things. The flagships of Xperia have a five-pin connector that provides power to a number of accessories, this is both a plug-in external microphone and a headset with support for active noise cancellation, it was planned that a whole range of all kinds of accessories would appear. In the XZ Premium and XZs, all of these features have been retained.

As for LDAC, the company's range of headsets with support for the codec is expanding, now there are sports devices, and in-ear headphones, and large speakers for the home. You can find all devices with LDAC, alas, Sony does not single them out in a separate section, so you have to pretty much click. But I won't complain - if you have an Xperia and want cool sound, spend some money on the MDR-1000X or MDR-1ADAC, load FLAC into memory, and have a lot of fun. By the way, whoever I recommended the MDR-1000X to, everyone was satisfied.

Performance and features

I list the features, evaluate the performance, tell you the nuances:

  • A 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor is used, the Adreno 540 is responsible for the video. All applications start quickly, the "back" heats up during games, but does not burn hands. The results in AnTuTu in the screenshots.
  • In addition to starting the camera with a special button, you can start it by double-clicking the power button.
  • Decide to reinstall the SIM-card - get ready for a reboot, everything is like in the good old Z.
  • The device uses USB Type-C, 3.1, to get a good data transfer speed (5Gb / s), you need to buy a special cable. By the way, for fast charging, you will have to go to the store and buy a special power supply. If you say, “Was it difficult to put it all in a box right away? These accessories cost a penny! ”, Then the people from Sony will quite truthfully answer you that then the device would have cost several thousand rubles more. If you want speed, buy your own accessories.
  • The smartphone uses 64 GB of built-in UFS (Universal Flash Storage) memory, it was indicated on the slides that the write speed increases three times (1.5 Gb / s). As I said above, the recording of photos and videos is fast, the installation of programs is instantaneous, and in general the speed is pleasing.
  • Installed with a 3230 mAh battery, fast charging and Qnovo Adapting Charging technology are supported - with its help, you can save the battery life. You should not expect any miracles regarding the battery life, the behavior of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium will entirely depend on your preferences. In my case, the device survives until the evening, then the search for outlets, external batteries begins.
  • I immediately put the Google keyboard instead of the pre-installed one - maybe not the best option, but I like the simplicity.
  • The latest version of Android is installed at the moment, in the future you can count on support for at least 18 months. This may seem like a short time to some, but even the Z3 + recently received an update to Android 7, and went on sale in May 2015. As you can see, it's been over 18 months now! Accordingly, for the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, you can count on long-term support from the company. During use, two system updates arrived, with no problems installing.

conclusions

There are no questions about the quality of speech transmission, you can hear a call on the street in your pocket, the device clings to the network to the last. Now in official retail the average price of a smartphone is about 55,000 rubles, it is interesting that on the same Yandex.Market it is easy to find a device for 45,000 rubles or even cheaper. These are probably gray devices.

I see how many people complain that, compared to other modern smartphones, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium has lagged behind life, they say, the usual design - nevertheless, the gadget has something to love, especially if you are a fan of Sony and you do not need to be initiated into religion. If necessary, if you please - if you want to buy something from smartphones, but cannot lean towards anything, cannot figure out what would suit you, try the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. I am sure you will like the metal inserts on the top and bottom, the feeling of heaviness in the hand, performance, water resistance, quiet operation with two SIM cards, convenient buttons and a conveniently located fingerprint sensor, a large screen suitable for both games and watching TV shows while business trips, the capabilities of the camera are also captivating, especially with regard to slow-motion shooting, I really liked it. There are also a handful of minuses here - and this is not a soiled case at all! I don't like the strip on the screen at the bottom and the way the camera is "optimized" in relation to normal shooting, here you still need to wait for new software versions. The quality jumps from shot to shot.

Another thing is that I have not experienced any serious problems either. What to buy now for 50,000 rubles is a matter of taste, someone will go for the S8 +, someone out of habit will go for a new iPhone, but the Sony Xperia XZ Premium will also find its buyer. Probably, this is a loyal fan of the brand, with PS4 at the ready, with a Sony camera, with Sony headphones - such a person will enjoy a smartphone immensely, I'm sure.

Should a non-Sony fanatic try it? Yes, especially if you prefer content over form experimentation.

P.S. If you choose between XZs and XZ Premium, I would advise you to take the latter, the size will be confusing only in the first days, the habit comes quickly.

Quite often, journalists, experts and ordinary people argue that Sony supplies everyone with its own sensors, but has not taught its own smartphones to shoot. This is not the first time we have tested Sony Xperia smartphones and have long noticed a positive trend in Sony Mobile's efforts to improve the cameras in its devices. And it was with the release of the X-line that, in our opinion, the cameras in Sony Xperia made a huge leap forward in their development.

Interestingly, Sony, contrary to current trends, decided not to install a dual camera in the premium flagship, limiting itself to one main camera.

As usual, we started shooting in good light outside. Immediately it is worth noting the confident work of the focus, correct color rendition and high detail. There is also a nice and accurate background blur achieved by the G Lens.

The smartphone still has the usual Sony Xperia camera interface. In our opinion, it can already be reworked and updated to match the modern realities of the market. For example, in manual mode, settings are needed here and now, and not somewhere in the menu, and the selection of modes by swipe and individual downloadable scenes seem to be a relic of the past.

At the same time, the super-automatic mode is worthy of praise, which always accurately chooses the correct plot scene. You can shoot in high dynamic range (HDR) only in manual mode by clicking on the corresponding slider in the settings. With this function, Sony slightly stretches the lightest and darkest parts of the picture. In general, it comes out very well, but there are also miscalculations.

There are not so many shooting modes in the smartphone: "Manual", "SuperAuto", "Video" (maximum Full HD with 30 and 60 frames / s) and separate camera applications. Among them: “AR-effect”, “Artistic”, “4K video” (recording in 4K resolution is taken out as a separate item). The "Panorama" mode is also located here. Working with the latter can hardly be called Sony's strong point, although in ideal conditions there is high detail and gluing is invisible; but there are also problems when shooting panoramas.

G8142 INSTALLATION: ISO 40, 1/2500 sec.

Indoors, the smartphone has demonstrated very confident performance. Precise focusing, natural color reproduction and overall good quality in the end. If you look at the pictures on a 100% crop, you can see a small "oversharp", but within an acceptable rate.

The XZ Premium has an LED flash that can work in flashlight mode; there is also a separate function for removing red-eye. We would not recommend using a flash in a smartphone, as this leads to a dip in the white balance in the warm gamut. In the flashlight mode, the image is better and without overexposure.

G8142 SETTINGS: ISO 500, F2, 1/8 s

When shooting in the dark, the automatics begins to increase the ISO value and shutter speed, which can be noticeable in the pictures. Optical image stabilization is lacking in this case, and electronic SteadyShot works well, but is only available in video recording mode.

In general, pictures in the dark look pretty good and it is possible to take a high-quality photo in difficult conditions, especially if you stand firmly on your feet and hold your smartphone firmly.

G8142 SETTINGS: ISO 500, F2, 1/50 sec.

Unfortunately, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium lacks the ability to shoot in RAW format. Manual settings are available separately: on the main screen - focus, shutter speed, exposure and white balance, and the HDR activation and ISO setting are hidden in the menu.

G8142 SETTINGS: ISO 800, F2, 1/25 sec

The selfie camera is very good here. Its resolution is 13 megapixels, and the aperture of the lens with an equivalent focal length of 22 mm is F2.0. She copes with the task assigned to her well, the pictures have good detail and correct colors.

By the way, here it is worth noting a couple of interesting details related to the version of the smartphone in the "Shining Chrome" color scheme. First, you can take a great selfie using the rear mirror wall and the handy physical shutter button.

G8142 SETTINGS: ISO 40, F2, 1/500 sec

In this case, we also unexpectedly tried the predictive shooting function. If the camera notices any dynamics in the frame, then when the shutter button is pressed, it turns out not one photo, but four slightly different ones, so that later you can choose the best shot. This is another feature of the Motion Eye camera, although, unlike super slow motion, it is difficult to take such pictures on purpose. But it is impossible not to notice that such selfies come out an order of magnitude better than a picture on the front camera.

Secondly, the chrome backdrop can be a good reflector when shooting, which can achieve very beautiful effects.

The shooting quality of the new flagship can be appreciated both on its excellent 4K HDR display and on the monitor screen. But we have a great opportunity to print images on photo paper of different sizes on the Canon PIXMA TS8040 printer. Six separate ink tanks are installed in this device, but the main thing is there is an NFC module and the ability to print wirelessly, which we plan to use.

Printing can be started by simply bringing the smartphone to the NFC module: a smartphone with Canon PRINT Inkjet / SELPHY enabled literally requires this method to be used to start printing. It is worth noting that NFC is located in the very center of the smartphone, so it may not be very convenient to attach the device to the tag on the printer. On the other hand, you just need to touch for a split second for the process to start and the printer starts receiving a print job.

Having printed a couple of pictures on our favorite Photo Paper Plus Glossy II paper in 10 x 15 cm format. Frames printed at this size look very detailed and clear. However, when we printed a photo of the decorative panel by Charles Mungolo Mwenze, we noticed that the image, in our opinion, was not sufficiently contrasting and the background, instead of black, turned out to be dark gray with a blue tint. Then we printed a picture of the same panel, but already in A4 format on Photo Paper Pro Platinum and made sure that the Sony Xperia XZ Premium camera had a mistake in color reproduction: later we revised the picture on the smartphone screen and laptop display, making sure of a small error. At the same time, we noted how accurately the Canon PIXMA TS8040 printer reproduced colors.

But we did not rest on this and decided to print another of the test images in A4 size on the same Pro Platinum paper. It was a photo of a blooming lilac "Beauty of Moscow", which can be seen at the top of the page. Imagine our surprise when we saw the perfect print: the highest detail, a well-developed foreground and softly blurred background, a beautifully rendered sky and the main object - a beautiful branch of lilac, consisting of buds of different shades. So the Sony Xperia XZ Premium can be a very, very pleasant surprise.

You can't even imagine how difficult it is to take and photograph a Sony Xperia XZ Premium, or rather, it is very simple to photograph, it is difficult to take a photograph of a clean device. The blue smartphone is covered with fingerprints. My favorite chrome-plated XZ Premium evokes associations with the bombers of the Second World War, here I would like to draw some girl with a zipper with the inscription "For an iPhone !!!".

Although, in its habitat, the XZ Premium is unlikely to have natural enemies or even competitors, the device turned out to be too unusual. The first consumers are soniboi. The second consumers are fans of unusual gizmos. Third consumers - those who want to try "break". By the way, it can be professionals, bloggers, journalists, anyone who needs interesting slow-motion photography, both for a mobile device and for here and now. I took it off, processed it a little, and immediately posted it.

What did they do at Sony?

Yes, every frame in this post is the fruit of the labor of two people, I and my comrades cleaned up the dust, took a photo, the comrades blew away dust particles and erased them with prints, I intercepted my hand, it turned out well! And the Cup in the frame! Not even two, Sasha also added the logo - thanks, Sasha!

After a little rest from wine and jamon, I hasten to tell you the first thought that arose in my dull head. Often, journalists praise the device with foam at the mouth, but I think there is one yardstick for a good or bad thing. Are you ready to go and buy? If not, then write it down, maybe I liked it, but I wouldn't buy it. And if you bought, just write, I would go and buy!

In the case of the XZ Premium, I would buy. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, the already mentioned 960fps slow motion is a good thing for all sorts of tasks, both work and family. Summer is soon! Vacation! I would like to bring some interesting things, as the wife will throw up wet hair in a wave and spray will fly. As there the racing car will sweep by. How will we play squash and the ball hits the net. In short, there are, there are ideas for entertainment and for videos. Therefore, as I bought all sorts of interesting gadgets ten years ago, I will continue to do so.

Secondly, it is good to be a journalist, because they will give you a try before buying! Although now I have no doubts about the device.

Thirdly, I personally love Japan and all kinds of Japanese movements. And the XZ Premium is one of those. Somewhere in Japan, serious uncles thought, why shouldn't we take, and not stuff everything that is possible into a smartphone! The other uncles replied - okay, banzai, and shoved it! For those who have forgotten - Sony is a Japanese company. In Japan, Sony smartphones sometimes occupy up to thirty percent of the market by sales. Moisture protection as a trend - from Japan! You yourself can guess what the reason is (the climate, of course, but also the love for bath procedures, baths). Design from Japan, crazy colors from Japan. In general, it is surprising that XZ Premium will come to us, and even so quickly - there are only a couple of months left to wait, maybe even less!

How I love Sony Xperia XZ Premium!

What is there. There is, as already mentioned, design. It's hard to convey in words - the device is easily soiled, but to hell with them, with prints, you can buy blue, since chrome is too defiant for you. For me, this is the way it is, and if you take it, then only chrome! There is water protection. There is a slot for a memory card, thanks for that. Nice to take in hand. The screen, as you know, is 5.5 inches, 4K, HDR - in real life all this will be visible when playing the corresponding content, in real life there is just a good display with interesting colors, I liked watching photos, videos too.

The Motion Eye camera has its own memory, a special buffer for processing images, while two areas of application are the creation of the already mentioned fragments "broken" (960 fps, a unique result) and predictive shooting. They lifted the device by hand, he aimed at the object himself, took three frames without pressing. With the video, this is the case, write a video, press a button, it goes "broken" for a few seconds, then the speed returns. That is, the scenario is like in life, you shoot something, then there was a desire to slow down the moment and again return to normal speed. It's difficult to explain, I think the guys will prepare a review later and there you yourself will see all the wonders.

The resolution of the Motion Eye camera is 19 megapixels, all the usual for Xperia things such as augmented reality are available, from the new and long-awaited - 4K shooting.

But the camera and display are just the beginning. Here, wherever you look, everything is interesting.

Sony has become even more friendly with Qualcomm and muddied the Snapdragon 835 for the XZ Premium.

We wrote down support for almost all fast charging systems and did not forget about Qnovo so that the battery does not go crazy with your experiments.

There is support for Hi-Res Audio and a new theme called AHO, automatic headphones optimization, the device "sees" your headphones and adjusts to the characteristics.

Works with PS4 as a second screen.

You can watch videos from Amazon Prime Video, 4K HDR format - yes, maximum quality! Of course, the diagonal here is small, but it's nice!

Someone shouted to the Sony engineers "Stop !!!", but they, again, did not forget about the support for memory cards, support for two SIM cards, there is a regular 3.5 mm jack, the electronics, like armor, are covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 in front and behind. It seemed that they could stop and add one, well, two chips. We added everything we could. We did our best.

How I love Sony Xperia XZ Premium!

How much, how much, the inquisitive reader will ask? End of May, about 56,000 rubles, maybe a little more, hardly less. They promise support for 18 months (we are talking about Android, most likely they will support at least a couple of years), an official page on the Sony website has already appeared. I myself am personally looking forward to the device and will take the chrome version.

Finally, I want to tell you about a couple of things that work perfectly with the XZ Premium - the devices were tested at the exhibition, I did not just look at the photos. To begin with, I really liked the Sony Xperia Touch, a projector with Android on board, capable of showing a movie on the wall, keeping children busy, and working as a virtual DJ control.

This is all in the video that works quite well in life, I was lucky enough to play with the projector right in the hotel room. The device will cost about 100,000 rubles, maybe even a little more, the price is still being clarified. But, if you can afford a toy, you will definitely not be disappointed, a cool thing.

The second gadget is just my dream, called the Xperia Ear Open-style CONCEPT, in short, it adds a soundtrack to your life, which is great for anyone who meditates or just knows how to take a break, closing their eyes at a workplace in an office or cafe. And in general, you can work in peace, listen to music, answer questions from colleagues.

At the same time, you hear what and how is happening around, the noise of waves, as in a video, or the noise of a car. The device is interesting in terms of design, as colleagues say, the sound of the speakers is transmitted through the air ducts to the ear canal, while the rings in the ears are hollow, that is, you are always in touch with reality, but you also hear music at the same time.

I really, really look forward to all this! That's how I love the Sony Xperia XZ Premium!
