Size and feel
In Russia they like phones in black colors, and nothing can be done about it. I think that the iPhone XR in dark black will also hang in the top sales. In my opinion, the option is so-so: the phone has large frames, and together with the black sides, they visually become even wider and thicker. Therefore, I advise you to look at other color combinations, although this is already a matter of taste.
Although if you put your phone in a case, then it doesn't matter at all what color the device will be. But I don't like covers, so out of habit I still pay attention to the appearance.
In the case, the iPhone XR from the X is not distinguishable at first glance: the same "monobrow", in front they are like twins, except that the XR is slightly larger. But this is noticeable only during a direct comparison, when two phones are next to each other. The iPhone X is nicer to hold in your hand - it has a steel frame rather than an aluminum frame, but again, if you hide the phone in the case, you won't feel it.
There are a little more differences on the back: the iPhone XR has a single camera, while the X has a dual module, but let's talk about the quality of the shooting further in the text.
Camera
In our field tests, the iPhone XR is very good at photographing. So good that last year's iPhone X looks much worse against its background. Is this possible? In general, when I just got hold of the iPhone XR and went to take pictures of it, the mood was very skeptical. And if you look at the pictures on the screen of phones, then the frames on the OLED display of the iPhone X looked better. But then I shipped everything to a big iMac and things changed in favor of the iPhone XR.
The iPhone XR's camera is simpler in specifications. Portrait mode also works for him, but the software is responsible for the matter, while in the iPhone X both software and a second camera help. The iPhone XR has fewer additional modes for portraits, three instead of five. In addition, the iPhone XR only recognizes people in portrait mode, while the iPhone X can capture anything.
Pay attention to this point: in the iPhone XR, the audio recording quality has been improved - now it is in stereo mode, and not mono, as in the iPhone X.

The colors are just amazing! ... Except black
I bought myself, of course, a red iPhone XR, but I managed to see all the colors live in a joint unpacking with the entire Big Geek team.
The black color disappointed that it is not black. I, like many, hoped that Apple did not just call this color Black, and not Space Gray, but it turned out that the color of the back glass panel is no different from that of the iPhone X Space Gray.
Interestingly, such a misunderstanding did not happen with the white XR - it is really snow white, and not milky white, like the Silver color of the iPhone 8, X or XS.
Less premium means more practicality
I have never been a fan of steel, which came to Apple smartphones with the release of the iPhone X because of the soiled and excessive gloss, so I was waiting for an aluminum top ten - and I got it!
It turned out that in addition to scratch resistance and a more pleasing appearance to my eye, there is also a tactile sensation. Steel turned out to be tactilely nicer.
Is aluminum bad to the touch for this reason? No. Does this cancel out the shortcomings of steel? Also no.
In general, over the course of using the iPhone X, I just got used to tactilely pleasant steel, but then just as quickly I got used to aluminum again. The iPhone XR does not feel like a budget employee in the hand - in fact, it is not.
Moreover, I began to catch myself thinking that instead of doing something useful, I just often stare at my bright red iPhone. This was not the case with the X.
What is the permission?
Let's put an end to this question - everything is OK with permission. If I didn't know what resolution this smartphone has, I would never have thought that something was wrong here (and everything is, in fact, so).
The quality is excellent, the pixels are not visible. Where were all these resolution fighters when the iPhone 7 or iPhone 8 hit the market? Then there was no such talk, although their pixel density is the same as that of XR - 326 ppi.

I don't understand why everyone is so chasing OLED now. Yes, it is bright, energy efficient and has a deep black color, but there are also disadvantages. For example, some kind of completely multi-colored white, as well as fading pixels.
I have never complained about IPS in iPhones, and in XR it is also very high quality. I don't feel any color damage, except, of course. black. If you had OLED before, then the black color at first may even be a little overwhelming, but only in conditions of complete darkness around and a uniform black background on the screen (for example, when watching a video with frames or the Watch application interface).
You just need to get used to the old-new reality now again: black color ≠ black screen. But with white, I just got what I wanted - normal white, which, depending on the angle, does not shimmer from green to purple. In the iPhone X for the first month, this feature was very annoying to me.
There is more 3D touch in your life than you think
I almost did not react to the news about the lack of 3D Touch. Almost - because I constantly move the cursor over the text with a strong press. As soon as it turned out that this function was implemented in the iPhone XR by a long press on the space bar (as, among other things, the iPhone 5S, and newer models without 3D Touch), I immediately felt relieved.
Then I remembered that by pressing even harder, I could previously select words in the text. Fortunately, I accidentally found out that this function also remained, but it needs a “tap” with an additional finger. By the way, in this case, the iPhone XR even received additional functionality, because on iPhones with 3D Touch, the entire word is highlighted, and in XR, the selection starts from a specific position of the cursor - even if it is in the middle of the word.
Gradually, as I used my smartphone, I began to notice that I lost 3D Touch here and there. Like many people, it seemed to me that I hardly use this feature. But, as always, Apple does everything so intuitively that you don't even notice the convenient chips, although you constantly use them.
Unfortunately, Haptic Touch does not take over absolutely all the functions of 3D Touch - somewhere for obvious reasons, since the long press is already occupied by something else (as in the case of holding the desktop icon), but somewhere for some reason Then for unknown reasons - for example, what prevents you from previewing a notification on the home screen with a long press? He's not here yet.
But, fortunately, Apple promises to expand the functionality of Haptic Touch with future updates, but for now only third-party developers are engaged in this: a preview of a chat on Telegram or a photo on Instagram are still available.
In summary: is 3D Touch a big loss? Absolutely not. But it is more than you think.
Thick frames are not a sentence
The iPhone XR's bezels are only thick enough to generate jokes on the internet, but you and I know that the internet doesn't often have much to do with real life.
So, the frames are thicker than those of the iPhone X, XS, XS Max - yes, but you stop noticing this after about 5 minutes of real use of the "erka". Leaving the comments of my mother's analysts aside, the bottom line is that we get a smartphone that is about the same width as the iPhone X in a case, and which fits perfectly in the hand, and the frames have nothing to do with real life.
Bigger is better
Of course, we are talking about the screen diagonal. There is nothing to add here. If someone does not know, then it has grown from 5.8 ″ (iPhone X and XS) to 6.1 ″. Let me just say that the dimensions of the smartphone still allow you to comfortably use it with one hand, which, by the way, cannot be said about the XS Max.
Camera, portraits, overall image quality
I'll start with the portrait mode, since the public is most interested in it in this device.
If you do not go into the "iPhones" with dual cameras and the iPhone XR, then in short - I like portraits on XR more.
The main camera module, in contrast to the telephoto lens, captures more light, and also has a much larger angle of "view". As a result, portraits are much less noisy, more objects fit into the frame, and the algorithm does an excellent job of blurring. And by the way, the level of blur can be changed, which was not available on the iPhone X.
Wider dynamic range, wider lens, Smart HDR, improved light sensitivity - all this has allowed the XR camera (which is not different from the main module in the XS / XS Max) to make a big leap in image quality.
This is the first iPhone in recent years to have a really noticeable increase in this indicator. The iPhone X didn't have that feeling even when compared to the iPhone 7.I'm not a big fan of photography, but the iPhone XR makes me do it more often.
Performance, autonomy and more
I expected that the gain in Face ID recognition speed would be subtle, but this is not the case. Unlocking has become really faster and more accurate, which is noticeable not only in direct comparison with the iPhone X, but also separately.
Whenever it seems that there is nowhere faster, technology gives you a kick in the ass. Animations, opening applications, general interaction with the system - all this has accelerated, which is good news.
I'll make a reservation that the iPhone X is by no means a laggy smartphone, but the XR is faster.
The XR has gained both weight and thickness compared to the X, which has a positive effect on the battery capacity (2942 mAh versus 2716 mAh).
So, the "erka" really rarely asks for charging: ~ 8 hours of the screen with moderately active use is a reality. Again, the iPhone X did fine with battery life, but the XR is better, which never hurts.
The stereo speakers in the iPhone XR are noticeably louder. As in the case of the camera, this is the first time I've seen a noticeable increase in this indicator since the iPhone 7 (where they actually debuted).

Of course, if you have a sufficient amount of free money, then it is much easier for you to look towards the XS / XS Max, but I made my choice absolutely balanced and without regard to the price. The XR is the smartphone I've really been waiting for, and from which it is unrealistic to get high. The iPhone X didn't give me that kind of emotion.
By the way, I'm not the only one who decided to take such a desperate step. Zheka was also inspired by the Erka and changed his top ten for her. I don't know if I'm influenced or not, but that means I'm not that crazy! Right?…
