School Olympiad around the world

Almost every rock music lover who decides to master the guitar is one of the first tunes to learn the famous riff from “Smoke on the Water”. It sounds spectacular, but at the same time so technically simple that Richie Blackmore, they say, was embarrassed to present the composed melody to colleagues, considering it too primitive for a musician of his level.

So much has been written about the history of the creation of the song “Smoke on the Water” that I didn’t really want to take it, but to leave such a famous song without attention would be unfair. In addition, I will try to please you with a couple of not the most famous facts.

As you know, the text of the song tells about the fire, the eyewitnesses of which the Deep Purple members became in the Swiss city of Montreux. They came there to work on a new album in a mobile studio rented from. For these purposes, a room was rented at a local casino.

On December 4, 1971, Frank Zappa gave a concert in the theater of this gambling establishment. After that, the hall was supposed to be at the full disposal of Deep Purple. But fate decreed otherwise. During the performance of Zappa, a fire started in the room, the cause of which is called a shot from a rocket launcher at the ceiling. It all ended with the fact that the entertainment complex was completely destroyed by fire.

Musicians from Deep Purple watched what was happening from the window of the Europe Hotel, which is located on the opposite side of Lake Geneva. So the smoke above the water, in whose honor the new song was named, spread over its surface.

Naturally, they had to record an album in another room. The corridor of the Grand Hotel, fully rented for these purposes, acted as an impromptu studio. But we are more directly interested in the history of the song “Smoke on the Water”.

One morning a couple of days after the fire, Roger Glover, who was lying in bed and had not really woken up, came up with the phrase “smoke on the water”. He described it this way:

I was alone in bed ... at that mystical time between deep sleep and awakening, when I heard my own voice pronouncing these words out loud. I woke up and asked myself if I really said them, and decided that it was. I thought them over carefully and realized that this could be a potential name for the song.

A little later, he told Ian Gillan about this, but in a conversation they came to the conclusion that such a phrase is more suitable for some kind of drug addiction, and therefore decided to abandon it. However, the thought of the song describing that fire did not leave them, and over time they realized that “Smoke on the Water” would be the best name for it.

The lyrics of the song not only describe the sad incident, but also generally describe the stay of the group in Switzerland. Almost every line is followed by real events and their participants. For example, “Cool Claude” is the leader of the Montreux Jazz Festival, which helped bring people out of the burning hall.

Richie Blackmore composed the same guitar riff during improvisations, which he often performed with drummer Ian Pace. It is widely believed that he borrowed it from the song “Marie Moite” by Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto, recorded in 1966.

Deep Purple members did not believe in the success of “Smoke on the Water” and did not release it as a single until the release of “Machine Head” (early 1972), in which it was included. But a year later, the single was still released and performed well on the charts of different countries.

Over time, “Smoke on the Water” became the most recognizable composition of Deep Purple, which the magazine “Rolling Stone” placed on the 434th line of the list of 500 greatest songs of all time.

In an interview with “Metal Hammer,” Roger Glover described it as follows:

I think “Smoke on the Water” is the most important song that Purple has ever had. It is constantly required to be performed, but this is not the best song for live concerts. This is a good song, but playing it is a little tedious. The excitement comes from the audience.

It’s very difficult to list all covers on “Smoke on the Water”, because many bands and artists sang it. Among them are Iron Maiden, Metallica, Sepultura, Bon Jovi, Carlos Santana and others.

  • Once, speaking on television, Ricci Blackmore joked that the famous riff from the song represents Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, played back to front, adding that he owes the composer a lot of money.
  • On the shores of Lake Geneva in Montreux, a statue was installed with the name of the group and song, as well as with notes of a guitar riff.
  • In 2008, a survey was conducted among students of music schools in London to identify the most famous guitar riff. The first place went to the tune from “Smoke on the Water”.
  • In 2010, performing near Samara as part of the Rock over the Volga festival, Deep Purple performed the song, changing the chorus to “Smoke on the Volga”.
Lyrics Translation of the song
We all came out to Montreux on the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile - We didn’t have much time
Frank Zappa & the Mothers were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun burned the place to the ground
We all came to Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva,
To record songs on a mobile studio. We had little time
Frank Zappa & the Mothers played in the best room,
But some moron with a flare gun burned down the hall
Smoke on the water - A fire in the sky
Smoke on the water. Fire in the sky
  Smoke on the water
They burned down the gambling house - It died with an awful sound
Funky Claude was running in and out, pulling kids out of the ground
When it all was over, we had to find another place
Swiss time was running out - It seemed that we would lose the race
They burned a gambling house. He collapsed with a terrible roar
Cool Claude ran back and forth, pulling people out of the hall
When it was over we had to look for another place
Our time in Switzerland was ending. It seemed we couldn’t succeed
We ended up at the Grand Hotel - It was empty, cold and bare
But with the Rolling Truck Stones Thing just outside making our music there
With a few red lights an ’a few old beds, we made a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this, I know ... I know we’ll never forget
Finally we ended up at the Grand Hotel. It was empty and cold.
But by launching The Rolling Stones mobile studio to play music,
Turning on a few red lights and installing a couple of old beds, we set up a place to work in a sweat
It doesn’t matter how we got out of the situation, I know ... I know, we will never forget that

Quote about the song

... since then I have always listened to my random thoughts.

And what happens to ants in the cold winter, when the dome is completely empty? We learned this recently: they dig an underground shelter from frost at a depth of over a meter, where the temperature is always kept at about the same level; Having gathered in a big ball, they are waiting for the onset of warm days. But how do they know it's time to get back to work? More recently, German scientists have found an explanation for this, making a wonderful discovery: they revealed the existence of special "messengers of heat." Some working ants are less sensitive to cold than others; they non-stop ply between the winter shelter and the surface of the nest. When the sun peeps and the temperature rises, they creep out to warm up. After their return, the temperature in the winter shelter rises due to the heat brought by them with them; due to this, the average activity level of all ants slightly increases. The hotter the sun bakes, the more ant brigades creep up to warm up, and messengers call them here, the excitement of which also increases; finally, the temperature in the underground shelter rises so much that the entire population leaves it, returns to the surface and again takes up the affairs, from time immemorial, performed by ants. when the water bodies freeze Alder, willow Filin, tit, woodpecker, capercaillie

Even before birth, we all hear the sounds of the outside world through the "water column". Perhaps this is what prompted the five Danish musicians to create the band Aquasonic. This is the only band in the world playing music under water and arranging live concerts.

The leaders and inspirers of the group are Layla Skovmand and Robert Karlsson. Five musicians play exclusive instruments specially created for playing underwater. The guys play in small containers with water (a real Claustrophobic nightmare). The sound comes from large speakers, and each musician wears special headphones with which he hears what his partners are doing. Often it is difficult for them to coordinate their actions and make high-quality music, but they do not despair and are constantly trying to make their works better.

During the creation of the equipment, the group collaborated with the University of Toronto, engineers, and even Cirque du Soleil specialists. The result is the creation of a hydrophone, unique percussion instruments, as well as an electromagnetic harp, carbon cello and many other amazing equipment.

Even photos of the process of performing this music look charming and intimidating.
